      @LuckyDay:

      China fields more forces than ever before,

      Seriously, who writes these things?!  The amount of forces they can field are increased 50%, but the number they can build is increased 100%  WOW!

      That would be more, wouldn’t it?

      sorry Krieg, the problem with the terminology is that it implies you get, I don’t know, MORE THAN ONE NEW UNIT for China!  But that’s just not the case here is it?  No, you get Infantry and Artillery.  Should be no surprise then when people complain about the game.  This stuff just sets it up for failure.   Like Larry talking up the ‘refreshed’ sculpts and then we find them only on the country we never buy ships with and everything else is the same.  Yeah!…
      on a slightly connected note, any chance you could pass along to the wizards over yonder that they can move AA42 off of the “Upcoming” list and into something like “Now Available”?

      Australia and New Zealand, joined together as the ANZAC forces, represent a new playable ally. China fields more forces than ever before, but will need help from their allies – the United States and England – to withstand the might of expansionist Imperial Japan.

      apparently Anzac is represented, but not needed to be able to help against Japan…

      I doubt that ANZAC will be helping China much.  They’ve got their own problems.

      problems like, hmmmm…… Japan maybe.  But no, guess they won’t be helping out much there huh?   After all, in AAP40 the Soviets are NOT in the game right?  so who else is ANZAC gonna fight in a 4-player game with the US/UK and Japan?

    • RE: Damaged Factory Question

      i was thinking about that if they kept interceptors at the IC then they couldn’t use them on attack runs against you also, but yes, I believe that they choose between the attack and the SBR for defense as well.  Should they choose to intercept the SBR and then loose the territory, they would have the one move point to find a safe landing zone, such as with carriers being sunk and fighters needing to land…

      Infantry
      Artillery (if burma road is open?)

      Yes.

      anything else?

      No.

      Product Description on Funagain…

      Axis & Allies celebrates 25 years of strategy war gaming with a deluxe edition of its original theater-level game. Axis & Allies Pacific 1940, designed and developed by Larry Harris, utilizes the updated rules established in A&A Anniversary Edition. Two new combat units debut in this game, Tactical Bombers and Mechanized Infantry. Australia and New Zealand, joined together as the ANZAC forces, represent a new playable ally. Axis & Allies Pacific 1940 features an oversized board that measures 35 inches wide by 32 inches high. With over 450 pieces, deluxe game components and local storage boxes, this game raises the standard established by A&A Anniversary Edition. All new rules for neutral nations, naval & air bases, kamikaze attacks and convoy disruption add even more depth and historical accuracy to this giant game.
      Finally, this deluxe theater-level game is designed to join together with Axis & Allies Europe 1940 to create the greatest Axis & Allies experience to date! When joined, these boards will measure 5 feet wide by 32 inches high. • RE: Imperious Leader Pimps your AA50 game in two pages or less:

      Nice work IL and oztea!

      couple questions/thoughts

      IL:

      Replace Technology #3 with the following:
      3. Atomic Weaponry. (You must have Rockets and Heavy Bombers) Heavy Bombers roll 3 dice: 2 reduce IPC in the normal fashion, 1 is permanent reduction in IPC.

      cool to see the Abomb stuff as was discussed in a thread here, maybe it is getting to Larry too, very cool.  Anyhow, for clarification, are you thinking that one needs both Hbombers and rockets to use the Abomb, or just whichever is going to be the delivery method?

      oztea:

      House Rule 7 – Ports
      Territories with a Factory, Victory City, or Defense Installation are considered to have a port in one adjacent sea zone.

      would attaching ports to defense installations mean that defense installations on places like Iwo Jima mean they get a port too?  While it would be feasible for Hawaii to have a port, most of the other islands (okinawa, midway, wake, caroline)I think might be overmatched to have a port too…

      5 or 6 – Heavy Armor – All Tanks now cost 7 IPCs but are now have an attack and defense value of 4.

      this is a break from other breakthroughs, like long range fighters, jet fighters and super subs, there isn’t an increase in price associated with individual unit purchases…

    • RE: Thoughts on A-Bomb

      in AAP you can’t make the process too long as Japan has somewhere about 7 turns, at very best and by the 6th won’t be making 50, let alone 25 to be able to pay for a bomb and the US won’t need it.  A bomb that expensive may have to be the hail mary that wins the game  though too, I’d be afraid that the simple expense using it will cripple a country for a couple turns while the enemy advances…

    • RE: Damaged Factory Question

      @KarlParsons:

      I’m trying to understand the risk of doing an SBR.  Say I take 3 bombers, risk getting them shot down by A&A and defending fighters, somehow make it through (which is unlikely), roll 3 dice and get a 2, 4 and 6.  Then the other player just has to pay 12 IPCs on their turn and place max units?

      if you are sending bombers against AA with defending fighters, then the odds do become much less in your favor of coming out ahead in the IPC race for SBR.  Though if they are using defending fighters at that IC, then there may be another IC that may be more open to attack.

      SBR is a balance and not without risk, but it can be worth it in right situations:
      pros:
          -You could lose your bombers
          -could lose escorts
         =lost IPCs in order to rebuild or units not used other places
      cons:
            -they could loose production up to 2x the value of the territory
            -or have to pay IPCs to fix production capability
            -or could lose interceptors (remote)
            -or could not be able to use interceptors in other battles
           =in some manner or other less units rolling out to fight you

      i have to go over to Larry’s forum to check out the complete conversation, just haven’t made it there yet, only picking up the pieces from here.  IL, keep at it, bend him to your will and fix the rest of the problems while you are at it, eh!  Good on ya!

      I read twice in the info thread

      that blockhouses in the new games wasn’t decided yet, so unless there’s something new I think we could hold out hope for them.

      regardless of the actual pieces, the Japs need to get an automatic roll of 3 for INF to signify thier defensive preparations on their first turn against any amp. assault regardless of what happens to the rest of the countries.  wouldn’t have to be pre-emptive, but needed.

      @Omega:

      Or will the game be so hudge that it is worth that much money?

      I’d go with that.

      gee, I hope that whole world wide recession thing doesn’t affect the purchase of 2 $80 games too much…

      page 11:

      "Step 2: Roll Research Dice
            For each research you have, roll one die.

      Success:  If you roll at least one “6,” you have successfully made a technological breakthrough.  Discard all your researcher tokens and continue to step 3.

      Failure:  if you do not roll a “6,” your research has failed.  Keep all your researcher tokens and continue to the Purchase Units phase of the turn."

      good deal, that’s the way we played it, but the way the printing actually worked out overlapping it coulda helped the German defense of the Med, as would have that UK sz3 thing to protect Karelia.

      @LuckyDay:

      And then there is UK; does it touch SZ3 or not?  my '42 map has the line that comes from the Arctic Circle touching the UK.  Then the line that extends from the UK to Norway to separate SZ 3 & 6 just offset above the UK so that technically SZ 3 does not touch the UK.  This is new from previous incarnations, did I miss somewhere where this is actually the case or is the image askew from what was desired?

      found in the Fact thread.  thanks Krieg!

    • Another Territory/Sea Zone question

      here’s a couple territory question/anecdotes from playing over the weekend:

      on my '42 map, Gibraltar appears to touch both SZ 12 & 13.  the line for the outline of the TT starts at Spain, then continues touching 12 until it gets to 13, where the SZ line then proceeds south to Morrocco.  While AA50 has them connected to both, AAR isn’t, but it’s so close it makes you wonder…

This is new from previous incarnations, did I miss somewhere where this is actually the case or is the image askew from what was desired?

      not so much on topic, but just have to say that I so much prefer the red Jap units to the earlier yellow or even the orange ones that newer games have had.  Back when they still sold replacement sets I ordered 2 sets of extra for AAP and have used them ever since.

    • RE: Thoughts on A-Bomb

      Taiki makes a good point, HeavyBombers are so over-matched in the games that they really have to be considered A-bombs.  Taking that line of thought, simply create a higher costing bomber, say adding 5 to their cost and use only allow one purchased per turn, then use them as otherwise stated in the various editions of the game.  Rather than recreate the whole A-bomb tech and development system, maybe it would be more simple to correct the broken aspect of H-bombers that we already have and implement them back into the game as A-bombers….

      i would think you could let it all go after that, after all, Japan had two Nuke programs going to the US’ one.

      The added aspect of A-bombs is the near instant death and destruction that they brought, vaporizing cities from the air is/was/can be a rather terrifying thought.  Hiroshima and Nagasaki were smaller cities farther away from the capital that had been relatively left alone from earlier bombing and were not as densely populated as places like Tokyo, so when fire sweeps through densely packed buildings you get many deaths.  when nukes explode and fire sweeps through more spread out and less densely packed buildings you get many deaths but less overall because of the lower numbers that started out, plus you get more survivors to hang on long enough to tell the horror stories of the mushroom clouds.
