    • RE: Carriers

      @Brain:

      I know if I was busy flying my torpedo bomber and suddenly out of nowhere I was attacked by a fleet of hostile ships, there is nothing I would rather have than my trusty torpedo. This should give me a defensive value of at least 3. :-D

      and the fact that you can climb to 5,000 feet and dodge and weave around their bullets…  :roll:  since it’s still a plane it’s a bit harder to hit than stuff on the ground, a 3 I think is reasonable for what it is…

      @idk_iam_swiss:

      Did stacking happen in the reality?

      oh yeah baby!
      look at the battle for tarawa:
      The American invasion force was the largest yet assembled for a single operation, consisting of 17 aircraft carriers (6 CVs, 5 CVLs, 6 CVEs), 12 battleships, 8 heavy and 4 light cruisers, 66 destroyers, and 36 transports.

      or D-Day:
      Allied naval and merchant navy personnel in over 5,000 ships were involved.

      or Luzon:
      The Japanese forces reported more than 70 Allied warships entering the Lingayen Gulf.

    • RE: Operation Sealion a Possibility with AA1940 Europe?

      @SgtBlitz:

      K, so…

      Consensus is that taking capitals DOESN’T get you all the fallen side’s income, plus DOESN’T knock the opponent out of the war (i.e., we want the person playing France to do more than get drinks for everyone the next 90% of the game…)  So, seeing this, it may NOT be in the Axis’ best interest to shoot for the capitals at game start with these rule changes/additions.  Maybe Paris, but definitely not London.  If the UK is getting 40+ IPCs at game start taking 8 IPCs for the capital will barely make a dent in their production, even with losing a turn’s worth of IPCs and needing to build factories elsewhere.

      Operation Sealion is definitely not a possibility then.  Only if there was some rule that allowed the Axis to change history by seizing the French fleet at Marseilles intact or allowing the Germans to invade/garrison Spain to strike Gibraltar would it even be barely viable economically.  Otherwise the risk in building fleet and transports just isn’t worth the cost.

      So, perhaps starvation, limitation of resources would be the only viable strategy; i.e., the traditional Axis and Allies game where the Axis gradually tip the world’s IPC balance in their favor over many many turns?  With this mindset in place, the game will definitely end up being another dragged-out game of attrition that will play pretty much the same as all our old games…

      BLEH.

      The Sgt. makes some great observations.

      As to the idea of the capture of capitals, I wonder that since the new games have 2 types of factories, that to both keep powers in the game longer and to still give some interest to capitals, which are often victory cities as well, what if the capture of a capital:

      • did not take you completely out
      • did not sap all your IPCs
      • did limit you to building only minor ICs and
      • turn any other ICs you own into minor ones.

      In the case of Sealion, the topic at hand and such, this would give Germany a valid reason to go after London as it would cripple Britain industrially but would allow Britain to still retain some play ability as they seek to both help the Allies and liberate London.

      If Britain started with 40 and lost 8 for London on G2, they still have 32, not a small amount.  But what can they build and where?  South African Complex maybe, but it’s a minor.  Canada? would have to be minor?  Anzac and India in a Global game would be separate and a minor, respectively.
      Britain’s still in, but they are a long way from their former glory.

      Germany has gained more than just 8 IPCs as well.

      As to the thought of France and Vichy, I’d still love to see something about Vichy territories going to the Axis with a Paris takeover, whether set or by die roll.

    • RE: What are the difference between 1942 and Revised?

      To throw in a couple thoughts about the differences too, to see the full scope of how the two line up.  The Classic Editions were the 1st & 2nd Editions, Revised was the 3rd Edition and '42 is the 4th Edition.  The Anniversary is a deluxe larger-scale model of this and the theater and campaign games are smaller-scale models.

      Rules and pieces in '42 are a hybrid of Revised and the Anniversary, but the evolution of the game is much akin to the transformation from Classic to Revised.  New pieces, revised rules, slight board modifications and such.  The game does take a different feel, but not as drastic as going to a larger or smaller game.

      Sea combat and rules as well as price changes also occurred (to add to Lozmoid’s) list.

      All that and that Revised is now out of print, so you’d have to buy an inflated priced copy 2nd hand…

    • RE: What if I dont want to do it larrys way?

      @WILD:

      quote from Larry
      Hey Emperor_Taiki, East Africa – how will this be represented in AAE40?
      Well I think so. I mean the French, the Italians and the British are all represented down there. I mean there’s Kenya, Tanganyika Territory, Rhodesia, Union of South Africa, South West Africa, British Somaliland, Anglo-Egyptian Sudan and an administered from London - Belgian Congo, and that’s just the British stuff… Hope this answers your question.

      Sounds like Africa will be a cesspool, with a lot of fighting.

      If they place units there.  Just because a power controls territories in Africa doesn’t mean that the setup will give them any units…  and let’s hope we don’t just end up with a bunch of opposing infantry all over the continent… yesh…

      @idk_iam_swiss:

      Italy really depends on north africa. There cant be to many forces there right? there never are in my other games.

      in previous incarations, the Italians were represented by German units, so most of the stuff in Italy, Balkans, NAfrica & the Med would be Italian.  Even in the old AAE, if you change that stuff to Italian, you end up with a decent force.  maybe better than AA50…  :roll:

      a simple role for each ‘french vichy’ territory to go axis or allied would be easy enough to house rule, could be helpful.

      Pacific is easier to make almost over half the map is ocean.

      truly hard to argue with that.  Nice!

      I think AAE was more popular too, so you dangle it out there longer and get more people to buy the Pacific one first.

      Sorry, haven’t played it though.  It looks interesting, but when they say “conquer the world” I sorta expected it to look like ‘our world’.  But hey,  you get to conquer a different world each time you change the setup.  that’s cool.

      no, france didn’t start them, it was that they couldn’t win them…

      why do americans dislike the french?  why is it that no one asks why the french dislike americans?  Americans are thankful for the french aide in their revolution, twas invaluable.  Nowadays, the americans are often made to feel that the rest of the world dislikes them, especially the french…  perhaps the americans are hurt that after all they did to save france from communism that they felt slighted that they have to pay to rent the land that was used for cemeteries for the soldiers fallen at Dday…?

      @Funcioneta:

      @LuckyDay:

      of course, if you look at how Russia got a 6 month headstart getting into the war and it is 6000 km from washington dc to berlin as compared to 1400 km from moscow to berlin, and still russia only made it to berlin first by a matter of days…

      Well, in fact, USSR (not Russia) could had arrived a couple of months before, maybe even more. But Stalin wanted ensure soviet influence sphere on Balkans and eastern Europe,

      and Patton couldn’t have gotten there months earlier had Montgomery not gotten all of his supplies used in Market Garden…  it would have to be alot more than 6 months to make up the difference in the 3000+ kilometers…
      @Funcioneta:

      War in Europe was won before D-Day (soviets would win anyway alone at that date), that’s credit for soviets. But D-Day saved France from stalinism, that’s credit for USA & UK

      War in Europe was far from over before Dday as a win for the Soviets.  Had Germany not had a Western Front, they could have utilized it’s factories at full capacity without American/UK bombing and resources would have headed to the East without pause.  The American supplied Soviets would have been pounded to dust even with Hitler’s neurotic commands (which would have been lessened by the lack of the Western Front).  Credit the Soviets for sucking American supply lines.

      Switzerland was not impassible in ways similar to the Himalayas or the Sahara, and for those reasons I don’t see any reason it shouldn’t be as playable as Spain or Sweden…

    • RE: Operation Sealion a Possibility with AA1940 Europe?

      The Swiss were nasty to both sides, actively attacked either side that crossed it’s borders and interning thousands of Allies and Axis soldiers for the duration.

      I can’t find the exact quote, maybe it’s a misnomer, but it’s credited to Hitler as asking a Swiss Leader what he would think about 5 million Nazi soldiers crossing the Swiss border and the Swiss Leader replying that the citizens of Switzerland would grab their rifles, fire 5 shots and go home.  Never did German attempt such.

      At times Germany and Italy would mount invasion forces at the border only to find hundreds of thousands of Swiss citizens all armed mass on the other side to counter them.  Their terrain helped them, but their preparedness with each home having at least one rifle and people trained to use them.  Should the Nazi’s invade, they would have been shot at from every window and building throughout the country.  They fought for their neutrality a long time.

    • RE: Operation Sealion a Possibility with AA1940 Europe?

      @maverick_76:

      Hey guys, here is an end to all of this: eliminate capitols, only have victory cities! As long as a country has an industrial complex then they are still in the fight. So for Russia for instance, if Moscow is taken, if they have a factory in Siberia they can still fight. You don’t lose any money, but you lose the IPC value, which Moscow would be a lot of value (probably at least 5-10 IPC’s). I think what you guys are forgetting is that you can’t just place an IC wherever, according to LH the territory you place it in must have a minimum IPC value and the IC can only produce 3 units max, or 10 depending on what type of IC you bought. So you as a country are defeated when you lose all your IC’s. You can still move troops and all that but you cannot build, effectively eliminating you.

      see, now that would be a very simple way to view it with the rules, forget moving capitals and all that jazz.  that could work.

      @idk_iam_swiss:

      I guess hes a little bit right, russia DID make it to berlin first. (I think everyone gets a peice of victory pie)

      of course, if you look at how Russia got a 6 month headstart getting into the war and it is 6000 km from washington dc to berlin as compared to 1400 km from moscow to berlin, and still russia only made it to berlin first by a matter of days…

      If switzerland had actually gotten into the war, they could have ended the war by taking berlin in a couple weeks.  just advance every person with a rifle from switzerland into germany (which was about everyone) and bang bang, all done.  kisses!..

    • RE: Blockhouse Talk 101

      so at roughly 6 months per turn, the Japanese need only hold an island for 1 turn, then they can build a blockhouse and place it on the next turn.  Territories owned at the beginning of the game can purchase blockhouses Turn 2 and place them on Turn 3.  That can cover the time aspect.

    • RE: Convoy boxes

      @Krieghund:

      The problem is that in the game, you know where all the threats are, whereas in real life they didn’t.  The UK had to spread out its fleet because it never knew where the German subs were or where they’d strike.  In the game, you know exactly where they are, so you only need to send ships to those areas.

      So that aspect hasn’t been addressed then.  nice…

      However, the exile rule should probably be limited to major nations (which excludes France, China, etc.)

      Wait!… did someone refer to France as a major power???
      no way!
      wow…
      phew, had to read it again…
      thought we had lost all sense of reality.

      I don’t think we have to see the concept as exiled to the extreme with this.  If Moscow fell, they could move to Caucasus.  It’s not like the Soviets didn’t move their industry to the East as the Germans advanced or that Hitler’s generals had plans to fall back into the mountains and hold out as long as possible if they could have only convinced him to keep fighting and not commit suicide.
       oh wait, he might not have done that after all.  he’s actually going to enjoy those 2016 Olympics in Rio.  Now that’s an exile.

      While powers could move across continents, they could more likely move to the next territory.  That may only buy them one more turn, but it’s something.

      when people sell things that, “fell off the back of a truck”, they never sell them for retail price, they always sell them for less.  So the IPC value and not the bank tracks better with that approach.  However, if you were to steal a country and then put it on ebay, you could get much more than retail for it, be just like selling AA50…

    • RE: What if I dont want to do it larrys way?

      @Twigley:

      Just to say - do not be fooled by statistics.

      The reality is that due to the purges and loads of other issues the Russian army was not an effective fighting force in June 1941. By December of that year Stalin had given plenty of lee-way back to his generals (unlike Hitler who tightened his control of the army yet further). The Germans lost half there forces by mid 1942 in Russia and they were still a long way from being booted out.

      That’s so true.  Hitler kept taking control, like in August '41 when he turned the Army groups away from Moscow into Ukraine and Leningrad against his generals advice.  This took 2 months before he turned attention back to Moscow.  That would have been critical time to perhaps get to Moscow before reserves arrived and Russia would have regrouped.  The goal was to get to Moscow within a couple months; while they were still behind schedule, they stood a good chance to get there before the fall rains or the winter counter-offensive.

      No there is no pre-order list yet. FMG will let us know in this thread when they are ready for orders.

      if you read the first several (or more) pages of the thread, it is primarily people saying, “I’m in!” and “Add me to the list of people who would preorder sets” from the poll…  No problem to add yours to the list cannon_fodder, now we just try and wait patiently… (emphasis on try, right? :-o)
