      I’ve only played full games of 41, and judging by the current topics and posts numbers in the 2 child forums, 41 is the far and away leader at this point.

      to start

      axis has economic advantage since round 3 or 4 usually,

      I said Allies have it to start, not round 3 or 4, hence many incorrectly think they have the advantage and can afford to purchase Allied bombers to start in round 1 or 2 and hence get themselves into trouble.

      definitely.  have to dig out and dust off 2210 to review the types of cards.  a more strategic level game like DDay could be a good place to test types of cards, since their effects would wouldn’t be so macro level of affecting an entire country…

      @wodan46:

      I agree, Bombers are too omnipurpose now.  Their huge range, combined with their usefulness in both ground support, naval combat, SBR, and even transporting, allows them to do just about everything.  This wasn’t a problem when they weren’t especially cost effective.
      Possible Corrections
      1. Fighter Interception/Escort rules.
      2. Cost back to 15
      3. Move down to 4
      4. Can’t attack Naval units.

      -Bombers have always been multi-purpose.  What are they but big hollow metal tubes that can be filled with anything you want and flown at really high altitudes to move things or push things out of like people or explosives.  Cost effective is in the eye of the beholder–good points Uncle Joe.  Bombers can do many things, but of all the great and wonderful things that they can do, what they can’t do is capture and hold territory.

      If you really want to diversify how they interact with other units in combat, take some of the Guadalcanal rules and apply them…  Bombers can go max 3 spaces to combat, and 3 spaces back.  Aircraft battle first, surviving aircraft participate in sea/land combat.

      @Bardoly:

      3) Paratroopers - Long missing from Axis & Allies, this tech totally changes the game into a different boardgame.  I’ve already had several games turn into a Long Range, Paratrooping, Heavy Bomber fest.  This is NOT how WWII was, and neither what Axis & Allies is or should be.

      Perhaps there should be a completely separate air transport unit or only allow paratrooping on a 1-for-1 basis when attacking with land troops/amphibious assaults.

      I’ve honestly never understood how Paratroopers is a tech upgrade.  What did they exactly have to invent mid-war that allowed troops to jump out of planes with parachutes?  If you wanted to create a glider piece that was used with paratroops, that could be neat and all, they didn’t have to invent them.  paratroops were something that everyone had and could already do at the beginning of the war–why not come up with a different tech and give everyone that to start with.
      –I know why, because the allies have the advantage of money to start and can afford to build bombers to move paratroops while the Axis don’t.  that’s the problem.  hit the allies so hard they don’t have a choice but to build ground troops and you won’t have so many bombers if some of these games.

      @Subotai:

      Instead of changing the game and making house rules, it’s more clever to think outside the box and make up new strategies.

      Just to notate the odd choice of terminology here, when talking about not changing the rules that come with the game (often referred to as rules that come out of the box), wouldn’t thinking  “outside the box” actually mean that you are changing what was in the box?

      Have you considered the interceptor rules that Larry Harris added with the Errata/Faq and such with this plan?  perhaps it was something he saw as well.

    • RE: Is ABattlemap Mac compatible

      @Cmdr:

      Well, we’ll have to disagree on that, because I view Operating Systems like UNIX kind of like going to the scrap yard and assembling your car from parts you find there where Windows is like going to the dealer and buying a new one with a warranty.’

      yeah, we’ll have to disagree.  I think you may be confusing linux with unix.  Linux is an open source system that is constantly diverging from different authors to keep it simple, so that would be most like the scrap yard, save that the scrap yard here is some of the nicest parts you can get and when building with it you are generally already a proficient machinist.

      in simple terms…
      DOS is a stable system.  Unix is a stable system.  Windows is very very very very very much not a stable system that has run on top of and utilized DOS to work.  And I believe that you mean that it emulates DOS in a virtual computer. The Mac runs inside Unix and the windows run ontop of DOS is an easy way to see the differences.
      Macs, until the Intel chip were able to emulate the Windows/DOS environment, but with the new chipsets can now actually run Windows better than PCs, crazy world.

      and just for the record, Macs, do not, and probably never will, ship with Windows installed or even a Windows/Microsoft sticker on them or the box.  3rd party resellers do not count.

    • RE: To Carrier or Not To Carrier?

      @EagleX16:

      I was wondering how many CV’s to field in each theater.

      In my play of AAR (has been awhile) as the Allies, or more typically the US– for the Atlantic, I don’t think I’ve ever had more than 2 CVs, maybe with a third for UK.
      In the Pacific, can go up, a couple early, but then add on a couple more if as I island hop always with a mix though.

      As Japan I like to try and add CV’s too to help keep US honest, though not as frequent.

      haha…  palooka… that’s great, and most history classes would be sooo much more interesting and actually conducive learning environments if it had a bit more of that.

      Germany needed the Hitler mustache though.

      I got ya, that makes sense.  While the DDay cards do add some variables to the game, they are not to the same sense of impact that the type of cards in 2210 are.  Thanks Strabala!

    • RE: France or Italy

      Many good reasons to go after both have been mentioned.  I personally like Italy as the option because it will deny Italy at least 1 turn of building units.  If I am able trading this territory, it is 2 spaces from Germany (yes, 1 from France, but 2 from new builds) and I feel harder for Germany to liberate.  As was mentioned, France can be hit from both Axis capitals in Europe.

      I wanted to ask the same thing but was afraid I’d sound snarky.  :-)

      I thought I might come across that way, but that wasn’t my intention in asking.  Having played both, i was really just having trouble grasping the statement and had to ask for clarification.

    • RE: Idea for us strat.

      ok, so how would you counter your own strat if it was someone else trying that on you?  look at your counter and then re-examine your strat in that light and see if it needs adjustment.  if you can find a simple way to throw it off, so can someone else.  but then you will find a way to better your start too.

      test and analyze.  will strengthen your approach.

      @C_Strabala:

      I agree that D-day is my least favored Axis & Allies game. When I bought it, I was expecting something along the lines of Risk 2210. Not the heavily scripted game that I got.

      what part of risk 2210 did you think D-day was going to be like?  I played both and all, but what led you down that thought line?  certainly not the nukes, moon landings, or underwater cities.  aside from that, pretty standard risk game isn’t it?

    • RE: Games like A&A?

      @Emperor_Taiki:

      they had a few other bigbox wargames, but NIE is definetly the best, it is the perfect balance between diplomacy and A&A, very good quality except for ship peices, which are just paper chips, if you get it you will be amazed by  all the crap that they fit into the box

      one prob though, apparently they dont beleave in editing at eagle games, so  the rules dont make sense al lot of the time
      dont worry though, becasue the fourteen people who still own and play this game have a rule set free to download called charge the guns, just google search those three words to find it.
      it is eighty pages long so it takes awhile to read, but i would read that first before you deside if you want it

      The rules part is why I never got into it.  You’re right, didn’t always make sense and when in those situations, it sorta wanted to make you knock your head into a wall rather than play.  Alas, there is an expansion set with the rest of the world (Asia/Pacific) and comes with ships.  These can also be used for AA games, pretty much the same size–close but not exact.  don’t get me wrong.  Want to add more types of units to China in AA50?  now you can.

    • RE: Brainstorming: What's the best way to kill the Japanese Fleet?

      @wodan46:

      The Play by Post games involve a lot more typing, and under a time constraint.  I honestly shouldn’t be typing much at all, but its the least straining activity I can do that I actually enjoy.

      Here’s a thought.  Your strategies all give the Allies the win in short order by quickly eliminating one of the Axis countries.  One would think this would actually help cut down on the amount of typing needing to be done.  As for time constraints- they can be set by the participants.  And since typing is the least straining activity…?  less straining than seeing your plan go down in flames?
