      @RogertheShrubber:

Very good point Lucky. I have simmed this 4 different times, and the German engagment off the US ended up in a wash 3 out of 4 times. Depending on the dice and German sub strengh, it would be a good idea to land the Fighter on the CV for added defensive strength.

gotcha.  I’ve used the bonus money to start to buy another sub in the atlantic at times, allowing me to bring 4 or even 5 subs (if I don’t want to take out the Canadian convoy zone to the  E US and take it with 3 subs.  Much less does give you pretty much a wash for G2.  depending on the outcome of the celtic sea battle too, there could be 1-2 more available for a G2 assault on E-US or Canadian seazones, so the more defensive firepower the better.
it would take 5-6 subs to comfortably take a BB/SS/TRN on G2, but 4-5 to take on a CV/TRN/DD.  The FIG will up that though.

      @Rakeman:

But, what about a revised Pacific???  Do you think such a game will never exist?   :?  That would benefit far more from the new sea rules than Europe would.  I’m not sure I follow why revised Europe is in so much more demand than Pacific.  I mean, Europe is completely broken as the strategy every n00b would want to try first as Germany (LOL TANKS) is practically unbeatable, but the Japan India Crush in Pacific is equally ridiculous IMO.  Of course, the difference would be that Japan has alternative paths to victory in Pacific, while Germany either tank rushes or dies.

If they could make a Europe where tank rush wasn’t broken, I would be very impressed though.  Would be quite a game… I just can’t imagine how it’s possible.

While a revised AAE would be great, I thought that there was a thread that showed how AAE was not broken and couple that with the fact that the 2nd ed. rules crippled the allies, not the axis.  There are counters for the Indian Crush and now for the tank rush, maybe more the problem with these versions is that they aren’t played much.

“NEW!” revised versions could help both, and Revised-Revised version would help sales too–it’s all a profit thing here, cheapest parts, least amount of labor and most profit.
I say we all just print out IL’s Eastern Front map and play that with cobbled together pieces or FMG’s new set.  Then after profits tank, (no pun intended) we may get a solid build, after seeing how many people have bought and complained about AA50, we’ll likely all buy this new one and then complain about it and that only enables wotc to come out with something new. they make poor offerings though and we bail them out with purchases.
if they ever ‘fix’ the game completely, we won’t buy anything else.

if AAR is out of print, and you do see less of them around and they are off of big box store shelves like target and toysrus now, then it is just natural that they come out with a new edition. if it’s an updated AAR with new pieces, new map, rules changes and such for $25 that isn’t a bad deal.  if you have an old version you like and have fixed the rules, then the new one wouldn’t be needed…  on the other hand, might be a good time to ebay those old copies of AAR as slightly used…

a transport cam load cargo before, during or after it’s move.  If it picks up before or during, it can off-load at the end of it’s move.

Color is supposed to match the battledice, but even if a bit different I think they could still suffice to work with current pieces.  Some Paintskreig could always fix your ills.  And since they’d have to be at least re-sculpted designs of the original units they could function as extensions of unit types from the original or stand-alones that simply replace all the originals.

    • RE: Can the Allies win if you don't send planes into Russia?

      interesting…
      found this:

Mark V’s were also sent to the Soviet Union to aid in its fight against Germany after Operation Barbarossa commenced in June 1941. Britain would supply a total of over 1,300 Spitfires of several Marks to the Soviet Union over the course of the war, along with almost 3,000 Hurricanes. An interesting relic from the period is a 1942 Finnish Air Force aircraft recognition guide depicting fighters in service with the Soviet Union (remember that Finland fought alongside Germany against the Soviet Union). This is how they depicted the Spitfire Mark V in Russian markings:

and this has several more pictures of Soviet painted Spitfires as well as their movements in the war.

      @RogertheShrubber:

UK buy 1 carrier place in Canada, save rest, hopefully your DD and tran survived round one (it really hinges on keeping that Canadian tranny alive rnd 1) us air power to clear western border seazones of Brit Isles

US buy 1 BB, 1 sub, 1 trans, leave DD and tran if survived with new buys.  (Use the US sub to reacapture US convoys taken by Germany).  Also send Russian fleet towards Brit Isles to draw fire or to recapture convoys. (US air of figheter, and bomber should land in Brit en route to Russia, another option is to engage rnd 1 with destroyer and US air to help clear subs from surrounding UK seazones if German presence is still strong, meaning you will have to ship the DD away from US fleet round 1 making the DD vulnerable.

      Roger-
Are you landing the US fighter on the Brit carrier off Canada in this?
-I’m assuming a solid opening G1 where all US ships and Brit ships save the Canadian ones are sunk in the Atlantic.
Looking at it, a decent G2 could have 4 German subs choosing between Canada’s DD/TRN/CV 7-def punch(possible Fig-now 11 def punch) or E-US having BB/SS/TRN -8def punch.  If the DD was sunk off Britain, then US airpower cannot attack any of the german subs there.  The fighter could make the US fleet look more tempting for G2, while without it the Canadian fleet will be a better target.  One way or another, there would be more new german subs coming on G2 also from the baltic to attack whatever moves to Britain on B/U2.

If you aren’t going to land a fighter on the CV, you might be better off with a DD for less and same def until you can protect a CV.  Or to even put 2 DD off Canada, giving you 3DD/1Trn and 10-def punch, plus if any survive they can connect with aircraft on a B2 or 3.

    • RE: I need some ideas to invade norway with the allies…

often I will see either only the Canadian Fleet or US Fleet left after G1, with every other Allied ship in the atlantic (save the Russian fleet) at the bottom of the ocean.

Since it’s usually the Canadian fleet that left in my experience, if you are wanting to gather enough forces to quickly hit norway and are open to using the brit planes in the atlantic, I would suggest starting with the Canadian fleet and planes hitting the largest group of subs within range and trying to help clear the road from there.  Understanding that that DD will most likely be sunk on G2 unless it ends it turn in E-US, E-Can, or off the British coast where you build additional ships to help protect it.

    • RE: AA50 House Rule for 'Neutral' Countries

There has always been something unsatisfying to me about the whole neutral countries aspect of AA, whether, back in Classic or now.  If the world is at war, then merely someone declaring that they are neutral or non-belligerent is not going to keep everyone else out.  Germany had plans to invade all of these countries and others beyond, but for fluctuating reasons historically they did not while the Allies were more restrained.  Now, total war could change all that again, but that’s not what I’m thinking.

I hate unnecessarily muddying the waters with additional rules but from a historic perspective the difference between the Allied and the Axis powers on violating national sovereignty’s was a big part of what kept the war out of these countries for most of the war.

I’ve tried the Classic scenario, but the US simply starts dropping into Spain immediately as it’s the same seazone as Morocco.  Talk about opening a 2nd front quickly.  USSR can perhaps too easily grab Turkey and hold it via Caucus.  For the other countries, in my experience the Classic rules would be more doable, even out to places in South America, Africa and Europe though Mongolia, Himalayas, Afghanistan and the Sahara could be left impassible.  Movement rules of the game are more dependent on these than the others.
For Classic neutral rules to be adapted to AA50, you would have to look at at least these two countries in regards to Axis only attacking, or perhaps varying cost to attack IPC-wise for Axis vs Allies.  3 for the Axis may need to be 5 or 6 for the Allies.

      @ Funcioneta
Spain is a gateway of historical possibilities to the game, with the Blue legion fighting for Germany and millions given to the democratic and communist Allies from banished patriots.  I could definitely see opening Spain to both sides Split Loyalties more easily than any others.  If the game continued to show tilt towards the Axis Spain could be the lynch-pin to fix rather than a bid.

    • RE: AA50 House Rule for 'Neutral' Countries

Steps for interaction of these nations:

**1–**These nations can only be attacked by Axis nations.

**2–**When attacked, Spain has special rule about Split Loyalties.  Axis rolls 1 die.  If Germany is attacking, a roll of 1 will swing Spain to join the Axis freely.  If Italy is attacking, a roll of 1 or 2 will swing Spain to join the Axis.  Anything else will keep Spain defensive and will result in combat.

**3–**After combat, if countries fall, their IPC value becomes whichever Axis nation captured them.  if the invasion fails, they remain neutral and their armies are returned to pre-invasion numbers at the end of the round.  Further, if Spain holds, no further chance of joining the Axis freely.  This was a one time roll.

**4–**The Allies will never invade the neutral countries listed while neutral, but can invade (ie liberate) if they are captured by Axis.  When captured, they become a protectorate of that Allied power and their IPCs go to the liberating country.

**5–**Allied ICs cannot be build in these countries when liberated, however if held by the Axis, they can build ICs, and if liberated by the Allies, they can utilize these ICs.

    • RE: AA50 House Rule for 'Neutral' Countries

Adding Spain, Turkey, Saudi Arabia & Sweden as Optional Countries
The term optional is used as because the Allies played by a different set of rules from the Axis, with more of a dedication to not invade a declared ‘neutral’ country and to influence ‘non-belligerent’ to their aide through more diplomatic means.

      -Spain Value=3-ipcs
after just finishing a hard civil war prior to WW2, and though aided by both Italy and Germany to different extents during, Spain was reluctant to actively join the Axis without certain needs being met that historically were more than the Axis (Germany especially) was willing to meet.  However, Spain’s military was battle hardened and would have met any attack from either side of the war, though to what extent they would have been able to resist is seen as not beatable by the Germans.  Historically the value of fighting for the land was not convincing enough with other fronts already open.

Spain defense at 2 Infantry, 1 Artillery and 1 Fighter.

***Additionally, because of the close possibility of Spain joining the Axis, a preliminary Split Loyalties roll will be given.  If Germany attacks, prior to the combat, a roll of 1 will  gain a diplomatic win and Spain immediately becomes a partisan for the Axis and a protectorate of Germany. If Italy attacks, a roll of 1 or 2 will gain diplomatic win and Spain becomes protectorate of Italy.  No Divided Loyalties roll is given for a Japanese attack.

-Turkey  Value=3ipcs Turkey was never as close to the Axis as Spain, though they were tied to Germany for trade reasons. Their borders were held and they did not plan any attacks with Germany like Operation Felix in Spain against Gibraltar.  Turkey was still in transition from WW1 aftermath however and did sign a non-aggression pact with Germany (though so did the Soviet Union) before finally joining the Allies late in the war.  Though Turkey had over 200,000 troops, including air and mechanized divisions, they were very poorly equipped and trained compared to other nations in the war.

      3 Infantry, 2 Fighters

***Control of Turkey will allow Dardanelles to be opened to naval passage if using optional rule for Dardanelles.

      Saudi Arabia Value=4ipcs
-at best during WW2, about 15000 troops were able to be called upon by the king, and their arms had not changed much since the WW1. Most of the troops rode camels and their loyalties were not always with the king.  Oil was the huge prize to the Allies here that was to be protected.

2 Infantry, not for numbers of troops, but for vast desert routes to traverse to reach targets.

      Sweden  Value=3ipcs
-Sweden made concessions to both Allies and Axis during the war, though perhaps more to the Axis, including tons of iron ore per year.  However, Sweden was declared non-belligerent during the war due to allowing volunteers to aid Finland against the Soviet Union.  Sweden’s military defense budget sky-rocketed from the 30’s on to help allow itself to remain sovereign.

      3 Infantry, 2 Artillery

**Additonal bonus, the ability to close the Baltic Straits when controlling both Sweden and Northwestern Europe to enemy naval passage.

    • AA50 House Rule for 'Neutral' Countries

There are a number of countries on the map which are assigned as ‘neutral’, though they may have been ‘non-belligerent’ during the war and allowed trade to one or both sides or volunteers to go and join one or both sides.  This is as opposed to a country like Switzerland, who was seen as their own side after showing no tolerance to either side’s armies.
Plans by both Axis & Allies were drawn up for to engage or invade these countries and why shouldn’t we be allowed to do the same.

As such, here are rules to enter several of these countries into the game.  These countries are Spain, Turkey, Saudi Arabia & Sweden.

    • RE: Do you play with the Optional Rules from the FAQ document?

      DY

you’ve summed it up well, really a testing thing, some may not find a problem, some may, and that’s probably why Larry listed more as an optional rule than even suggested or expected.

looking at the after action reports, the first 50 games list in -41 were 28-17 to the Axis (5 draws), and the last 50 were at 8-5 to the axis(2draws).  from just the numbers the optional rule of closing the Dardanelles may be good to help balance, but that could lead to the need of the interceptors to help rebalance what could be a big swing back to the allies from the dardanelles closing.

      Krieghund,

ok, so we are trying to really understand this right.  playing a game with mojo right now and we’ve had this come up in 2 rounds in a row and we want to make sure we got it correct.

on page 14-15 of the manual it gives the steps to naval combat.
      1-setup battle board
      2-submarine 1st strike/ remove casualties
      3-rest of attackers fire
      4-defender fires

the situation i posted actually happened in our last round.  Can you help us break this down.  on step 2, with the presence of the enemy allied DD, does the japanese SS fire in step 2 on its own or is step 2 skipped because of the DD and the SS fires in step 3 with the fighters?

    • Sub Destroyer Handicap

If say the Japanese player attacks a zone with 1 SS and 4 FIGs against 1 SS and 1 DD:

The Jap sub does not get a 1st strike, so both the SS and FIG shoot at same time, correct?

If the sub hits and say 2 of the FIG hit, then there is 3 hits to be accounted for with the 2 allied ships (DD/SS)

What can be hit?  Do all the hits have to be accounted for on the 2 ships, or can the allied player take the sub hit on the destroyer and then the Fighter hits will not be able to hit the Sub?  Remember they are all at the same time…
      thanks!
