This is copy paste post from the TripleA main site, in case new players are not updated on how the “new” TripleA works:

Here is a list of places where you can get popular maps for TripleA (version 1.2 and later):

All you have to do is start up TripleA 1.2.X.X (Yes that means run the .exe or .sh) and click on the “Download Maps” button. A dialog box will open where you can add links to “Map Repositories” (sites that host maps.) Here’s are a few to add:
      http://sites.google.com/site/tripleawarclub/tripleawarmaps.xml
      http://sites.google.com/site/veqryn/documents/TripleA_Maps.xml
      http://sites.google.com/site/tripleaerniebommel/home/mods/TripleA_Quality_Mods_EB.xml

Just take the second link (the long http one that ends in .xml), and copy it.  Then open up TripleA, click on Download maps, then PASTE it into the blank box there, then click “list games”.  (clicking the links to the .xml below will do nothing for you).  Here is a Slideshow showing how to do it.

I would also like to provide links to a browser accessible battle calculator, and if you are in need of strategy please check out the Forums of AxisandAllies.org.  TripleA also has a wiki site.

If you are new to War Games, I highly suggest you go and read a Rules Book for a certain popular war game that happens to be very generic in manner.  Slightly more advanced rules may be more complex, but are more rewarding too (though they may require some help).

If you have a map or a link you would like me to include, pm me and i’ll add it to the list.
      Thx
      Veqryn

PS: if you have made a map for tripleA 1.2.1.0 or later, it works and runs, and you would like me to host it, please pm/email me or post below.  I will upload it to my site and include it in my .xml for downloading through tripleA.
This list is edited, so check back often.

      @captainjack:

Does anyone know if a triplea version of RISK has been made?
      Thanks.

Probably not, but there is a RISK version available for free for Linux, so I guess there must be a version for windows also, just do a google search.

Id say that the axis, despite being down…26, give or take, do not need extra IPCs, though it wouldnt totally unbalance the game if they did. They just half to take advantage of things like the british being so spread out.

Sorry, my last bug report may have been not-actually-a-bug.
The enemy ships that appeared to co-exist with the own were not moved but built there in the Purchase Phase.
I understood this is forbidden in some A&A versions and allowed in others - but can’t track now which is which ;-)
The scenario may have used the setting which allows that.

Just to sum up what happened at the end of this thread:

TripleA is very much alive. It got purged of any name references to the boardgame, but the maps resembling the official boardgame in setup support the complete rulesets of all the versions out there.
More important, in my eyes, it features some user made maps with different themes. Some of them are aimed at the advanced player (like New World Order - NWO1.7EB, for example), with the positive side-effect of having a mannered and above-average skilled community around them. The large maps tend to value strategic thinking above tactical assessment.

Imperious Leader nailed the last comment.

Japan entered the War with the West with 51 Army Divisions; however 27 where already in use in China. Thirteen of the remaining divisions were facing the Red Army. Japan was willing to head to war with the Allies with ten to eleven availiable divisions!

Japan would quickly start recruiting from it’s 73 million population, but Japan kept the same habit of attacking the Allies with smaller forces.

The other alliance setups which I think can work, is

axis = Germany, Italy and Russia.

axis = USA, Germany and Italy, could also work.

Other setups which could be fun trying, is uber Germany. There are several options for an uber Germany scenario.

      1. Everything is normal except Italy is an allied country from the start of the game.

      2. All Italian units are removed at the start of the game, so Germany must take the Italian controlled TTs, which then will belong to Germany for the rest of the game, or allies if they capture TTs which was originally owned by Italy.

      3. All Italian units and TTs (at the start of the game) are converted to Germany.

Any such scenario must be played w/o NOs. If someone are interested, send pm. Any games will be TripleA live games. I must confess that with any of the above scenarios, I’m most interested in playing axis, but side switching is probably most fair if we play several games.

It’s even worse: allies fall as a card castle after China fall J1: India, Australia and then or Soviet Union (KJF) or Alaska plus Canada and maybe Africa and finally Soviet Union anyway (KGF). As in Revised, ignore a theater and you lose the war. Opposite to Revised, you cannot choose as allies in 1941, it’s Japan who chooses ignore China or not, and if Japan is wise, it will not ignore China J1

Your point is valid: even if the game were balanced (and it’s not), it has no fun the way China is designed, even for Japan. When I play face to face, Japan is my last option, because it’s the more boring: just stomp all at your reach  :| I could even pick Italy (but not China) before than Japan

I agree for more than just the financial reasons.

A Pac Strategy is SOOO easy in this game to pull off, even a rookie can do it!  (With the Allies.)  Japan literally cannot be everywhere with it’s navy at once like it could in Classic and (to a lesser extent) revised.  Too many new sea zones let you hide your fleet around.  If Japan splits up to protect all avenues of approach (notice that they would have to move into range of your fleet to block you after starting out of range) then you can focus your firepower to destroy their smaller fleet(s).

      KrieghundK

      @hakan:

I have changed my mind. I also think the NO’s are brilliant! Not only because they make the strategies look more like in the real war, but also (don’t bark at me Krieghund) because you can balance the game yourself, or to simulate for example the “Sino-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact”, just by adding a few lines in the NO. Much better then to add complicated Optional Rules.

I have nothing against house rules, per se.  I use them myself.  I just think that some people are too quick to implement house rules to address perceived imbalances in games, before enough games have been played to determine whether there actually is a balance issue.

Except first rnd, Jap killed my BB, all US units went to Europe. The problem with the -41 scenario is that US must use much more ipc to build a sustainable fleet than in the 42 scenario. I did not play effective as allies though, with not killing German fleet UK1, I screwed US purchases etc. Maybe I played too aggressive with Russia, but I think Germany + Italy could take Caucasus anyway. Game wouldnt end if I didn’t take Berlin, unless the attempt was a failure :)
Axis player slowed Jap himself with not taking either Philly or Borneo and east Indies J1, but the Jap beachhead in Asia was as strong as the Normandy landings, so there is not really an opening to KJF, more than in AAR. SJF is important where it can be done. I killed a lone Jap trans with DD, these things are mistakes that will happen sometimes, until we get used to the new rules.

      House Rules!

They always add flare like what you were saying attack on russia only formidable until japan attacks them which would be really historical and maybe making territories like “midway” worth an ipc for the axis and not for the allies love house rules like that

If someone would like to try AAR with setup like Germany+US or Russia+Germany, I’m up for it, I can host TripleA.

We only need to change some minor details in the .xml files.

No tech! Preferably LL, but I also play ADS games.

It will a “fun game”, nothing too serious, but I always try to win…  :-)

We can play 1 vs 1 or more players maybe, send pm if you’re interested.

It lets you host and connect to other ppl via the internet.

The biggest problem with triplea is the hosting issue imo. There are some fixes to be done, but triplea is the best
there is atm. Hosting is a real pain. Very few ppl can host in the lobby, and few can host outside the lobby.
With hamachi most ppl can host triplea without doing any port forwarding.

      Oh dear - a little off-topic…

To my mind, a major key to the game (and thus a good player) is unit count and IPC value. The player with the most land units at the end of the game wins. Units give you options, and the ability to limit your opponents’ options, the ability to control territory, and thus build more units.

Units at the front are more important than other units. Don’t lose these unless you are making the other side lose more of them.

So to my mind the keys are:

Not letting your front-line units get killed without taking more down in return Get more units to the front more quickly Build more units - this means infantry Enable your units to exert their influence in the maximum number of places. This means Transports, tanks, and don’t lose your air units, maybe even build a few, but that will interfere with #3

      #1 is tactics
      #2 is logistics
      #3 is economics
#4 is force multiplication, and allows you to do more of #1 and #2 with your existing units. You can evacuate, attack, create kill zones, shift fronts, etc.
