      @frimmel:

Some folks resist using it or stop if the dice don’t go their way though and they feel ‘cheated’ be being asked/required to use it.

I think the group I’m teaching would like using the accessories of dice towers and custom dice from Field Marshal Games.

Thanks I’ll give Graig a PM.

I know that most of you live no where near Watertown, NY but I thought I would post this tid-bit.

The Sci-Tech Center of Northern New York located on Stone Street in Watertown, NY has decided to host a A&A worshop every other Saturday from 10:00am - noon.

It is designed for younger players 10 - 14ish but if you are in the neighborhood it is a fun way to impart some A&A wisdom.  (I mean think about it other humans that think every word you say about A&A is scripture.  I can’t even get my dog to do that.)

The next meeting will be December 27th, 2008.

If you have any interest, questions or just want an old-fashionded A&A butt woopin’  let me know.

In Janurary of '03 we had a stint of -30*F.  It was very sunny, calm no wind and no snow (minus what was already on the ground.)  The weather guy said it was to cold to snow.  He explained that the moisture in the air would hit the dew point long before it would get to us.

It stayed that way for almost 6 weeks.  I got a lot of ice fishing done.  8-)

I wouldn’t mind that again for a few weeks. :-)  But only a few weeks I would rather not have to spend the nest egg keeping the house above freezing.

      @balungaloaf:

i have to strongly disagree with zhukov here.

its not insane to attack the russians.

americans were the only ones with the bomb.  japan wouldnt want to get bombed again, and russia could give japan NO support.

american could begin daily bombing runs again on all modes of russian factory output.

plus add nuclear devastation to many key soviet cities and to whole armored divisions.

Nations committing such acts will get retribution in kind, sooner or later.  Russia as a state might surrender, but the atomic bomb alone wouldn’t destroy communism completely, and eventually communists (all over the globe) would find a way to respond.

Truthfully I consider it insane to use the atomic bomb at all.  Unless it is against aliens.

Since December 7th is nearing and oddly enough will again occur on a Sunday I thought this would be a good topic to discuss.

      I found this on Wiki:

The attack on Pearl Harbor (or Hawaii Operation, as it was called by the Imperial General Headquarters)[6] was a surprise military strike conducted by the Japanese navy against the United States’ naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on the morning of Sunday December 7, 1941, later resulting in the United States becoming militarily involved in World War II. It was intended as a preventive action to keep the U.S. Pacific Fleet from influencing the war Japan was planning to wage in Southeast Asia against Britain, the Netherlands, and the United States. The attack consisted of two aerial attack waves totaling 353[7] aircraft, launched from six Japanese aircraft carriers.

The attack sank four U.S. Navy battleships (two of which were raised and returned to service late in the war) and damaged four more. The Japanese also sank or damaged three cruisers, three destroyers, and one minelayer, destroyed 188 aircraft, and caused personnel losses of 2,402 killed and 1,282 wounded. The power station, shipyard, maintenance, and fuel and torpedo storage facilities, as well as the submarine piers and headquarters building (also home of the intelligence section) were not hit. Japanese losses were minimal, at 29 aircraft and five midget submarines, with 65 servicemen killed or wounded.

The strike was intended to neutralize the U.S. Pacific Fleet, and hence protect Japan’s advance into Malaya and the Dutch East Indies, where Japan sought access to natural resources such as oil and rubber. Both the U.S. and Japan held long-standing contingency plans for war in the Pacific which were continuously updated as tensions between the two countries steadily increased during the 1930s, with the Japanese expansion into Manchuria and French Indochina greeted by steadily increased levels of embargoes and sanctions from the United States and other nations.

In 1940, under the authority granted by the Export Control Act, the U.S. halted shipments of airplanes, parts, machine tools, and aviation gasoline, which was perceived by Japan as an unfriendly act.[8] The U.S. did not stop oil exports to Japan at that time in part because prevailing sentiment in Washington was that such an action would be an extreme step, given Japanese dependence on U.S. oil,[9][10] and likely to be considered a provocation by Japan.

Following Japanese expansion into French Indochina after the fall of France, the U.S. ceased oil exports to Japan in the Summer of 1941, in part because of new American restrictions on domestic oil consumption.[11] President Franklin D. Roosevelt had earlier moved the Pacific Fleet to Hawaii and ordered a military buildup in the Philippines in the hope of discouraging Japanese aggression in the Far East. As the Japanese high command was (mistakenly)[12] certain any attack on the United Kingdom’s Southeast Asian colonies would bring the U.S. into the war,[12] a preventive strike appeared to be the only way[12] for Japan to avoid U.S. naval interference. An invasion of the Philippines was also considered to be necessary by Japanese war plans, while for the U.S., reconquest of the islands had been a given of War Plan Orange in the interwar years.

While the attack accomplished its intended objective, it was completely unnecessary. Unbeknownst to Isoroku Yamamoto, who conceived the original plan, the U.S. Navy had decided as far back as 1935 to abandon ‘charging’ across the Pacific towards the Philippines in response to an outbreak of war (in keeping with the evolution of Plan Orange).[12] The U.S. instead adopted “Plan Dog” in 1940, which emphasized keeping the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) out of the eastern Pacific and away from the shipping lanes to Australia while the U.S. concentrated on defeating Nazi Germany.[13]

The attack was an important engagement of World War II. Unintentionally occurring before a formal declaration of war (which had been scheduled to be delivered shortly prior to the attack beginning),[14] it pushed U.S. public opinion from isolationism to the acceptance of participation in the war being unavoidable. The lack of warning led Roosevelt to call it “a date which will live in infamy.”

Well, the beauty of having both sets is you have enough Hellcats to play with only Hellcats.  I don’t mind using both planes, but I only use the navy planes on the carriers.

Then, sure you never tried a Pacific fleet in AAR. Try mixing USA fleet, UK fleet and some marines in the islands. Try moving this each turn and you’ll see why you should keep marshalling cards. Still, z6 was pretty small. And let’s forget when Japan goes and attack the mixed fleet.

I think the reason for removing marshalling cards and making China a popping inf country is the same: economical crisis. You know, those are less miniatures and more cards to do, and AH or WOTC need spent less money. Their legitime choice, of course. Of course, also is our legitime choice mod China and take some marshalling cards from AAR

      JenniferJ

      @ncscswitch:

To get THAT much Japan hardware in range of the US for J2 would mandate that Japan was effectively going KUSA, with commensurate loss of income in Asia.

      Not really.

7 Infantry, 2 Fighters attack China with the two fighters coming from Manchuria and FIC.  These fighters can land in Japan.
3 Fighters, Battleship, Carrier, Destroyer, Submarine, Bomber attack SZ 52
      Fighter, Infantry, Armor attack Hawaii

2 Fighters from the SZ 52 battle can land in SZ 45 on the carrier and battleship from SZ 37

now, without building a darn thing you already have:

      2 Battleships
      2 Carriers
      6 Fighters
      1 Transport
      1 Destroyer
1 Submarine* (If it was not lost)

      vs

      1 Battleship
      1 Transport
      1 Destroyer
3 Fighters (Assumes the fighter was lost in Hawaii)
      2 Aircraft Carriers

I did not give up anything in Asia, but I did station everything in range of America.  The transport in SZ 52 can easily pick up units in Solomons to attack Australia with two bombardments if I don’t need them.

Or, don’t attack Hawaii and add 1 fighter to the defensive forces, but don’t risk losing your infantry and armor in the process.

      Odds:

Attacker: 2 Battleships, 2 Carriers, Transport, Submarine, Destroyer, 6 Fighters (2 Fighters in SZ 52 can attack and land back on Wake), Bomber (assumed stationed at Wake where it can again land)

Defender: Battleship, 2 Carriers, Transport, Destroyer, 4 Fighters

(note, this does not take into account any builds for Japan that may or may not be in range of SZ 55.)

I have the Japanese winning over 99% of the time with losses of transport, submarine, 2 fighters.  I believe that is a rather good trading position for Japan.

      ?

I checked my copy of Nomonhan, Japan’s War Against Russia, 1939 by Alvin Coox, two volumes, information on the Mukden Incident in 1931 contained in volume one.  The Chinese were well aware of the Japanese’s interest it taking over Manchuria, and were try to avoid giving the Japanese any pretext to launch an offensive.  Part of the Chinese forces, 110,000, mentioned were actually located in North China, in the vicinity of Peking and Tientsin.  The remainder were scattered across Manchuria.  They did have some aircraft, but I am more than a bit dubious about the claim of tanks.  If they had any, they would have been Carden-Lloye Mark  VI tankettes.  The Chinese put some faith in the guarantees of the League of Nations, the Kellogg-Briand Pact, and the Nine-Power Treaty governing foriegn penetration in China following WW One.
