    • RE: What was the craziest/stupidest thing Hitler did

After France falls to the German armies, the rest of the listed military items seem rather pedestrian and mundane.

The paradigm has shifted for them.

It took the many of of the listed poll items to shift the paradigm for an Allied victory.

      Such is hubris.

    • RE: What was the craziest/stupidest thing Hitler did

We all look back and the 20 / 20 history that shows us “of course !”, and how obvious it was after the fact.

Hitler planned for, and then invaded France.

Most of the Western powers and the Russians would have thought such a plan was a way out long shot.

It stunned the world that a superpower such as France (at the time) would fall to a crazy person like Hitler.

This poll mainly highlights the crazy things Hitler did that failed, and not the key crazy thing done that actually succeeded beyond belief.

    • Where do you expect gas prices to go for 2014?

      Hey Gang,

My wife and I filled up our vehicles gas tanks last night for $ 2.69.9 / Gal Regular which seems to be a stunning price drop over the last 3 months.

With the news of war near the Turkish border and Ukraine, I was actually expecting prices to be higher than back in July.

The only news that would lower gas prices is the airline stocks plummeting for Ebola.  Airlines mostly buy diesel, which is a heavier fraction of crude compared to gasoline.

The lack of other news reports about this price effect had the two us going over a conspiracy 4 year USA trend about this time, but we are off 2 years in the cycle.  We are not sure if this will ever be reported in the regular news outlets,  I did not even hear of this over financial media (WSJ radio), which is often very keen on prices.

I do recall prices over $4 / gallon regular while living around Chicago in 2013.  Prices hovered below the $ 4 / gallon regular as we moved to Texas.

Anyway, vote / post your thoughts, and lets see what happens after Thanksgiving.

    • Do shorter folks like Spirit Airlines ?

      http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2014-04-10/the-most-hated-u-dot-s-dot-airline-is-also-the-most-profitable

I rode this No-est thrills airline to Florida.
It was painful, but I am 6’0.
My wife is 5’1 and loves Spirit so much she even got their credit card to get more miles with them for a free trip.

      Please post your thoughts.

    • RE: 3 Generation Risk Game

Hopefully, those risk games end before the cards trade in for too many armies.

40+ armies for such a trade, added to regular production could build in a lottery mentality for your kids.

A&A has steadier reinforcement per turn and favors frontal defensive stacking .  This playing style would often lose in risk .

      S. America allows two paths to victory.  Neither will be so obvious to your opponents until you cash out a big set of cards to knock out your nearest one for the next set of 3+ cards.

Wash, rinse, repeat your way to the victory.

      @Flashman:

Yes, disability is a sign of evil.

Look at Richard III or Dr Strangelove; there’s a definite connection there.

It is common among the Bond mastermind villains and their major henchmen.

My coworkers were joking around that topic and then chalked it off to regular corporate HR discrimination.

      @Gargantua:

If it was a gun and not drugs, the parent would already be in Jail.

      so sad…

Parents who leave marijuana bongs out for the kids will soon be celebrated.

      @wheatbeer:

Does anyone here view either faith or atheism as a choice? (this is a serious question and not merely rhetorical)

I certainly view it has a choice. The greatest predictor of what religion a child will follow when it grows up is which one its parents followed. Even amongst the believers everyone has a different vision of what or who God is. That suggests to me it is most certainly a choice.

Most adherents of islam never got a choice.
It is the only faith they ever knew until adulthood, at which time fear keeps them from leaving.
Most who choose outside that faith are quickly and violently killed, reinforcing such fear.

      Comparing now vs 1963…

      Joe Biden is from Delaware…

So as long as the current POTUS does not tour that particular state in an open motorcade, he should be able to celebrate retirement on some fancy golf course in Hawaii.

This recent repeated buzz about the 50 yr anniversary of the JFK assassination in the media makes me think that a lot of the media wants a new one to report on very soon.

    • RE: Washington-Oregon Trip

Oregon has no sales tax , so factor that in when shopping for pricy items.

Oregon requires gas attendants to fill up your tank (forced jobs), that means you have to fill up your gas tank during their working hours.  Personally, I prefer the automated gas stations in other states that take credit.

Both coastal areas have great seafood.

The hotels I have stayed in usually have a tiered promotional card rack that point out various points of interest.  Some of the restaurants cards from that rack will offer free desert or similar incentive to go there.

I offer blessings on your new life together.

    • My Brother discovered another potent 4X Time killer for three weeks

      http://triton.ironhelmet.com/#landing

This game pits you vs 7 other real anonymous players in a variety of 4X galaxies.

Production gets you ships and technology more or less in real time.
The income arrives every 24th hour of the game, giving you a turn-based feel.

Game leader board category graphs are also logged on various hourly intervals for that turn-based sense of competitive progress.

The how to’s highly recommend at least a few diplomatic alliances to assist on trading technology research gains.  Up to you whether you honor chat agreements, or stab someone who helped you tech up.

All it takes is a yahoo or google account for login and

Here is a German speaker’s explanation:
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0NvAlcW9lw

another view of the prior beta version:
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eDiYndob5c

Playing a game on this site would need about 3 logins a day , and a game could take 2-3 wks of daily play to resolve.  Cannot login for a few days?  Well, the new ver provides an autopilot empire manager that triggers when you have not entered any commands in over a day.  My brother says the AI for it is v weak, operates only production w no ship movements, and you may only find the neighbors have taken out peripheral chunks or more of your galaxy by the time you log back in.

2 ongoing games are allowed per account.
You can quit a game in the middle too.  This allows you to join a new galaxy waiting for the full roster of 8 players before starting.

A&A takes about 1 day to finish
      this one can take 11-30+

My wife and I took 3 days to drive back from my brothers apartment , and I had many visions of that game during the trip.
Then I realized that the fleet movements that look like your flight progress views from some of the airline flights very much mimic Sid Meier’s Railroad Tycoon (visible train movements on the tracks), which was also highly addictive.

I am married.  I plan on staying that way.
      My brother is still single.
I will refrain from this one.

      @rjpeters70:

Like I said, I think the President was backed into a corner by his own rhetoric, and now feels compelled to act in order to shore up his own credibility, but it’s not something he really wants to do.

Really sad for the leader of a superpower.

And Aequitas:  The U.S. is still a superpower:  We’re the only nation able to project force on a global scale.  We are, I’ll admit, in a rough patch, but we’re better set up to remain the global hegemon for the next three decades than anyone else.

I prefer the good old Monroe Doctrine days.

I recall that the gassings you mention during the Iran vs Iraq war did not get us or the UN involved either.

Of course, during that war, Iraq and Saddam were considered our ally.
