RE: Vance (Allies) vs. AlexGreat (Axis), G40 Alpha +3posted in Play Boardgames
Agree, Moscow would have taken awfully long. But holding Novgorod and the original border for some time while Japan mounts up the pressure would have helped (takes long, though). Of course I’d have expected a US European invasion, and with time you’d be successful there. Dont really know who would have been faster. But with Scandinavia out of your control my income vs. yours would have shifted in my favor for some time + Japanese.
As for the Pacific and the US, hard to say. Divide US resources and landings in Europe are more difficult. Your Alaska fleet would not have survived, one way or another.
Concentrate in Europe and over some turns Alaska, Hawaii would fall, with a small carrier group each protecting India and the Philippines / DEIs.I really wonder about China, have no idea how to handle those from an Allies perspective.
So happy to start a new one, new set-up, without tech (although, naturally, with the US I would have loved to use it). Have only played allies once, just UK back then, hope I can put up a challenge.
Thx again for responding and giving me my first game here, Vance.
I have some time off in the afternoon / evening (local time), if you want to start Germany before that.

RE: Vance (Allies) vs. AlexGreat (Axis), G40 Alpha +3posted in Play Boardgames
I know. And you placed the fleet well.
Had I not made the breakthrough, I would have attacked SZ 8 with my ships and 6 fighters, taken Aleutian Islands, fortified Siberia with more infantry via transports, built an airbase in Siberia and landed air there, blocked SZ 4 with one ship and built one or two carriers for 2-4 more air to land in an adjacent sea zone wherever the sea battle would have been (in case you would not have attacked me), SZ 2, 1, 3, 8 or 4. Sure you would have built an airbase and scrambler in case of staying defensive.
Point is, all my air would have been able to land on Aleutians in an attack. In case you attacked you had lesser combat values, in case I would have attacked I had the subs and more air in range by then.
All in all I think I would have won this particular battle. But it would have been bloodier I guess. And above all this, I consider you the winner of this game from the moment you allowed my TTs to live in G3.
Pls forgive me for not typing the Non combats, I attach the map, I dont think I made a mistake. Pls feel free to check!! Its past 2 am again…
Re tech I am ambivalent. I too think it can distort the game, but usually in favour of allies as I as axis seem not be able to invest as much (mainly this exp comes from earlier versions of AA). But on the other hand it adds flavour and everyone is free to use it, if both agree. may playgroup likes national advantages as well, talk about skewing…

The dice do not favor you in those sea battles.
Pls allocate 11 hits, Vance.

oh ok, another thing I read differently in the rules. There it says “can submerge anytime it would otherwise roll the die to fire”. As the attacking sub would roll first, you could not submerge until shot at first. And it kind of makes the surprise strike capability useless. Even against a sub another sub should be able to sneak in…as it clearly can because if you dont submerge, you would be an eligible target for surprise attack. Not logical, but if it thats the rule, ok.

Speaking of this sub, I am afraid I never rolled for it. We can calculate an average and subtract it.
