    • RE: Low Luck Lies - The serious problems with this silly mechanic.

Results outside of the bulk of the Bell Curve are not possible in Low Luck. What Low Luck does is take a 75% battle and make it 100% or a 25% result changed to 0%. That is the point of Low Luck. To remove a game changing low odds result.

But why is this a good thing? 25% is 25%. It’s (relatively) low but it’s certainly possible. You’re not “owed” a victory just because it’s 75%. If the battle doesn’t go well, you can always retreat.

Low Luck removes a lot of the “adrenaline” of the game as well. Once you “know” what’s going to happen, the game also becomes more boring.

    • RE: kwaspek(x) v gamerman01 Classic 3rd ed

Correct. In the second edition, building sea units in enemy sea zones was presented as an optional rule. They made it a “mandatory” rule in 3rd edition.

(Btw, the 3rd edition was first seen in the 1998 computer game by Hasbro. You could pick and choose what rules you wanted as well as other optional rules)

And yes, you are correct, if aircraft attack a sub in 2nd edition and there’s no place for it to withdraw to, it basically auto-dies. I’m assuming this is why they added this rule in 3rd edition.

Crazy to me that this is the first time you guys play with Russia Restricted!

Well, there’s 5 of us now so you know what that means…we can play with Individual Victory! :)

    • RE: Submarine and submerge question

@The_Good_Captain yep, one round of combat must occur. this is clarified in the first page of the faq:

“Q: When attacked, can submarines submerge immediately or do they have to survive one round of fire from attackers?”

“A: They have to withstand at least one round of fire. Otherwise they would be practically indestructible.”

      @TheVeteran

      Huh.

While every game I played ended long after turn 5, I just thought that meant the historical outcome was a major fluke, with dice rolls really being in the Entente’s favor.

      Still, 6 months still doesn’t really work…

No version of canon series axis and allies articulates how much time a turn represents. This is intentional.

The closest comes from the original Axis & Allies Europe FAQ:

“Remember that a battle in A&A:E doesn’t represent a single bombing raid, it represents a commitment of resources to months of combat. A fighter “shot down” by a bomber represents planes destroyed on the runway, shot down by tail gunners, or shot down by the minimal fighter escort that you can assume is included with every bomber unit. It could even represent planes that crashed because of mechanical failures and damage to aircraft factories or maintenance facilities. At the mega-strategic level of A&A:E, it’s important to look at the big picture when analyzing what’s going on.”

For what it’s worth, I also kinda interpreted 1 round in this game as being one year more or less. Regardless how you interpret it Italy enters the war too early in this game imo.

yeah, though there is still plenty of room for me to screw this game up lol.

The balance of defending Moscow and attacking German territories is still very tricky as the Western Allies, and I certainly haven’t mastered it yet…

    • Victory Condition Question

Hi, @Krieghund I have two questions about the victory conditions of this game.

In the original manual it states:

“To win the game, the capturing player must still be in control of the enemy capital and his own capital at the beginning of his next turn.”

But in the official FAQ it states:

“Q. I’m confused; just how many capitals must Germany capture in order to win?
      A. The Germans need to capture only one capital to win, but they must also control their own capital
(Germany) at the same time. You need to control both of those capitals, simultaneously, for one
complete round (the end of your turn until the end of your next turn).”

Bold emphasis mine. Is it beginning of your next turn or the end of your next turn? For what it’s worth, the original Pacific manual “said beginning of next turn.”

The next quick question is let’s say the US player conquers Berlin but Germany captures Moscow. Assuming the German player cannot recapture Berlin in the following turn, do the Allies have to recapture Moscow to officially win the game? Or does the game end because the US player retains his capital? To quote the manual:

“If you are one of the Allied powers (Great Britain, United States, or Soviet Union), you must occupy Germany and hold it until your next turn. You must also control your home country. (The Soviet player must retain control of Moscow.)”

The “home country” is the questionable part. It makes it seem like only the player conquering Germany must retain his capital, and other Allied capitals are irrelevant.

      Thank you for your time!
