    • RE: Game table & War room pics from SS

      SS this looks great.

TVs, chairs etc is the way to go. When I have people over for the game, we generally play the Battlefield documentary series in the background on a big wall mounted TV. It adds to the atmosphere for sure. I put up some halogen spot lights which provide really decent lighting. Eventually (when the kids move out…if ever ) it will be the permanent war room.

    • RE: EBard Shapeways: Generals & Admirals for each faction for sale now!

He has nice stuff that’s for sure. I bought some Atlanta class CLAAs from his store, painted them up and used them this past weekend and they were a hit. I’m thinking really hard about these Generals/Admirals…need some rules though.

BTW, his capital city pieces look good too.

    • RE: Inkwashes

I’m old school on the ink wash thing.

I use a bottle of ink and the floor polish. I think I mix it like 3:1 polish to ink.  I don’t generally dip my pieces. Usually  a 5/0 or #3 brush works best to apply the wash. When doing ships, I’m careful not to wash the decks as I find it makes the whole piece look dull. I just do the edges around the castles, guns and other little details.

Let the wash dry and then dry brush your pieces. This really brings out the detail/contrast. I use flat Krylon  ColorMaster (spray can) for sealing/protecting. My pieces are handled a lot and it works the best.

    • RE: Activating Argentina

Funny part is, now you’ve got me thinking of pulling off something in South America. We’re playing this weekend, the map is set up and my Axis partner and I are putting together what we’re going to call Operation Evita.

That is all I can really say as our opponents monitor this forum regularly.

      We’ll see what happens.

    • RE: Activating Argentina

Yes, you can bait and distract the US (if they go for it) but what of the Commonwealth? By this time they have surely activated Brazil and will be able to check the move. The Commonweakth presence ups the ante for the Axis. It’s very possible in this case to go from “leading the dance” to performing the funky chicken when resources needed to attack/defend victory cities–- none of which are located in the South American theatre— are tied up fighting easily reinforced allied “gimmie” armies. If you throw in another 15 IPC investment for an airfield (Rio de Pro or otherwise), you might as well make the diversion into a full blown gambit to drive right on up to the USA and take them out.

Again, I’m not saying the Argentina activation doesnt have its place but I’ve always seen it from an opportunist point of view.  If it looks like the Allies are weak in the theatre and I can exploit the opening without compromising other, more important, theaters, I’ll consider going for it. If it looks like there’s not enough return for the expense (which is usually the case) I won’t bother. The S. America is just too logistically distant and costly, especially as compared to the Allies,  for me to bother with very often. You can’t build a minor IC anywhere on the continent. There isn’t even one naval or air facility to capture.  A real PITA to get anything outta.

As for Red Dawn, the more nothernly American climes represent a much more practical and logistically viable theater for that scenario to play out. Maybe S. American operations in support of hitting N. America would be worth looking at.

    • RE: Activating Argentina

On that note. Here’s a question, what happens s if the Allies invade say,  Corriente? Does this mean Germany does not have to enter Viedma to activafe Argentina now?

    • RE: Activating Argentina

I don’t see it as being a great move unless it’s part of a larger strategy in that theatre to seize resources and or disrupt allied activity down there. You get some navy and a small army but, as I said, you’ll get a whole lot of attention and, if you’re not good with timing, you’ll bring the Americans into the war earlier than you want.

I find playing around I. S America to be a bit of a PITA.

German Bomber/Transport from Normandy with an infantry. I’ve done this a couple of times, but the timing has to be right unless you want to bring the U.S. into the war earlier. I don’t do it often as many times the Allies just end up smashing all if it anyway.

I have been wondering about the Axis Minor ICs as well.

      Can Germany build on them?

    • RE: REAL "lend lease"

Like you guys, I’m interested in seeing how a re-vamped lend lease would pan out. Next year will be the bomb for new games, pieces and expansions.

Tall Paul, I’ve been waiting on the Amphibious Warfare expansion and dreaming on how the Pacific Islands will be fought over. I already have some of the pieces which could be used. This, along with the other expansions, and the new map will make the game truly epic.

      Yep, he’s right.

For instance, even if Warsaw falls to the Germans, Polish forces in E and W Poland do not move only defend.

    • RE: Italy has to be very careful 1st turn now

      Yes,

When I play Italy, I always build an IC in Tobruk and it does help. This being said, odds and such in mind, the Italian fleet rolls have had, shall I say, a less than inspiring impact on the battle. I’d still like to see a little more firepower.

Lately, the Allies have been dumping the FEC BB and a DD into the Med and, again, more often than not they’ve been ending up with the Yugo and/or Greek destroyers. I mean, all they have to do is walk in dammit. At this point, every little bit counts and it generally makes all the difference. In the last game the Italian fleet was wiped out except for a submarine and a transport off of Tobruk. Luckily, the retaliation from Italy and Germany was enough to send the Commonwealth fleet to the bottom.

I think some of the neutral fleets are overpowered too, but some are fine such as Brasil and Argentina. The Norwegian fleet pisses me off as well; even more so due to the fact I’ve NEVER managed to get even one vessel out of it as the Germans.

    • RE: Axis basically lost in the first two turns

Sounds like a reasonable solution. Or over part thereof.

If the U.S. get’s in earlier, as they sometimes do, it may not be optimal.

Maybe there is a way to build better AA defenses for ICs? Fortifying, better AA, better interceptors,….
