    • RE: Regular A&A players getting into Global War

      Agree with Yoshitako,

Look to spend a weekend with Global '39. And get lots of sleep in advance.

As for the rules, pieces etc., it’s no sweat once you get familiar.  I took a hi-lighter to the rules and made notes/references to make  looking things up in game easier. Make sure you have the necessary pieces though. HBG has pretty much everything you need if you are short. I have spent a lot of time putting the game together in terms of aquiring/painting those veteran pieces you mentioned. In fact, Global '39 is a hobby for myself and the other players. We are constantly introducing new pieces or customized pieces. The markers and rules from HBG are really cool as well. This weekend we’ll be trying out the rail markers and rules.

Oh, and get, or make, a 12d battleboard–if you are going to play witht he 12d rules (some folks on here are trying out the 6d, our group has not). We also made a custom IPC chart large enough to hold all the roundels for the different nations (no more trying to squeeze three or four roundels on a number).

Make sure you make time in advace for set-up. The group I play with is having a game this weekend (starting tonight) and the map is already set up. I cannot stress enough how much this helps in terms of time. Of course, you may have people who want to set up their country(ies) themselves or just before the game. We came to the conclusion that the host can do it for everyone if they wish to. When I host, one of my buddies comes by a day or two before just for setting up.

If you are playing as the Axis, get your head around the first turn German two impulse attack and the (before turn eight) Japanese sneak attack. Having a plan for Germany’s first turn makes things go faster.

Playing as the Allies can seem a bit overwhelming at first but I’ve done it and it’s a blast. After the first go it got easier and you find out fast that there are A LOT of strategic and tactical options as the Allies (and a lot more room to make mistakes and corrections without losing the game).

Overall, this is my favourite A and A variant to date. It’s well worth the investment of time and money if A and A is your thing. My advice is to dive right in and enjoy yourself(ves).

    • RE: Anybody play Xeno Europe at War or World at War?

I World at War with my gaming partner pretty much exclusively in the late nineties. We even had a custom map made from the glossy paper one that the game was played on at that time. I loved the u-boat pens, implulse attacks and special units.

The quality of the pieces was not the best, but that didin’t stop us from having some epic (sometimes a week) games. It’s really something to see rules like Zeno’s in today’s games. Like others on here, we still use soem of the Zeno pieces (e.g. destroyers) in our current games.

I have a newer copy of the game which I have never played. The old paper map has been replaced by a standard folding board. Some of the rules have changed a little.

One thing I really like about the World at War was how neutrals were handled. For the Germans it was based on income. So many IPCs and you could roll for Spain or Turkey then their IPC values and armies would be yours.

I agree with the opinion about being able to build infantry in any territoy worth 1 or more. It was like fighting an endless insurgency for the Germans and really affected the balance.

    • RE: 5.0 Rulebook bugs

      Yoshitako,

Thanks for bringing up the 5.0 rules clarifications needed. Our group will be playing '39 next weekend with the new rules, revised map, and some of the optional battle markers from HBG. Like you, I’d like to see an updated set-up.

The new rules do look good and I especially like the changes regarding industrial complexes which I think will change things a bit in Europe (having the French complex as a minor will certainly help the Germans).

Thank you Variable for the answers regarding the rules. After we play next weekend I’ll post some more questions I am sure.

    • RE: Global 1939 Variant questions

Pretty much sunk. Germany did well on the Vichy roll and had enough navy to slap the British around in the Atlantic. The British player was not very aggressive and decided to lick his wounds instead of bouncing back. When the U.S. joined up things started getting nasty for the Axis though.

      @Fishmoto37:

      @koba:

      Thanks again,

That’s how we’re playing it. Germany activated Argentina and that gave the U.S. what they needed to declare war.

I would be interested to know how the Germans got to Argentina to activate them. Did the Germs not attack Poland to bring U.K. into the war?

      Fish,

Germany landed in Argentina on turn four. She had already attacked Poland and such on her first turn. The U.S. had been rolling the dice, getting low numbers, and getting the bonuses from axis moves. Landing in Argentina took the cake and she went to war. The germans left Gibraltar for Argentina. The transport was escorted by a destroyer and 2 uboats.

      Hi Fellas,

Can axis forces move into or through Vichy territories (I know they cannot attack them).

    • RE: New HBG Airfield and Naval Base Markers

Thanks Tall Paul, this stuff looks really good.

I’m going to experiment with fortifications before game time this weekend. I’m thinking about making some small scenes with tank obstacles, bunkers, wire, etc. sort of along the lines of your airbases.

I’ll be following HBG close to see what they come up with.

    • Global '39 Battleboard

Has anyone made up a battleboard to reflect the 12d mechanic in global '39? I made one, but it’s a shameful expedient at best.

    • RE: New HBG Airfield and Naval Base Markers

      Tall Paul,

I think these look really cool and I’m thinking of putting something like this together for my '39 map. Where did you get the “houses”; monopoly?

Anyway, a game is planned for this weekend. I may try experimenting with your airfield idea if I can get the new Italians, Marines and GHQ stuff painted in time. I did get the Litco airfield markers from HBG and they look good (a lot better than the OOB pieces) but, like you, I prefer 3D stuff if I can make it/get it.

Do you have any suggestions for fortifications? I make my own now, but I’m not completely satisfied.

A fortifications piece would be great. As it is, I make my own but something from HBG would be welcome.

    • RE: 1939 Map

I like the idea of the insets like the original AandA. Territories that may become cramped could be represented on the borders of the map.

As it is, I think the map is good and enjoy playing on it. Yes, Europe and the western USSR can become a bit crowded, but using chips and keeping things neat helps out a lot.

It will be really interesting to see the new map and rules.

    • RE: HBG Global '39 Turn 5 pics

Thanks for the compliments guys. It’s a work in progress. Just got some destroyers and corvettes for the Commonwealth/Canada and will be painting them in time for the continuation this weekend.

There are still a lot of pieces left to paint (as you can see). This game deserves the work though.

    • RE: 1939 Map

      Tigerman,

The sneak attack is just fine as it has a turn limitation. If the Axis don’t have it together by the time the US is at war, sneak attack or not, things get messy for them. It’s turn five in the game right now and things are going the Axis’ way but the States is up and is at war. Moscow still stands and the USSR will be counter attacking soon.

The only think you may want to do to satisfy the detractors is cancel the limitations on the US during the sneak attack. Past that, this game is good to go in our (there’s four of us playing) opinion.

Again, compliments on a job well done. I’ve been playing Axis and Allies for 28 years now and this is my favourite incarnation yet. It’s a big project to get the pieces and such together. All involved are loving it. 12 sided dice system works well. More details on S. American neutrals would be good.

While we’re at it, I noticed a plexiglass cover on the map shown on the video presentation. Do you find a lot of glare with this arrangement or difficulty with defining borders (or any other issues)? I’m considering 1/8" plexi for my map (and possibly ordering a spare).

    • Global '39 South American Neutrals

      Tiger and Coach,

First off, this game is AMESOME!

What is the status of the South American neutrals (Chile, Venezuela, Peru etc.)? Do they have standing armies? We are treating them as if they do not.

      Thanks in advance.
