    • RE: First Game: Axis Domination

      @Raeder:

      @Bruda_Iz:

      I’m wondering how Japan was able to get enough stuff to Australia to smash it on R1 as well as doing everything else you mentioned.

      You will always encounter these type of guys on the Internet. They can do what no one else can, apparently, and whether or not its technically impossible doesn’t matter. When you ask them to back their claims they disappear.

      Yeah, I didn’t get that either.  Japan has a strong naval influence in the Caroline Islands but only 1 infantry unit.  Maybe on round 2 if they moved more land units down from Japan to the Carolines.  That is assuming that Australia doesn’t block their naval passage with it’s 1 destroyer.  That would cause a sea battle and push the invasion back to round 3.  By then Australia could have 6 more infantry to defend with.
      I’ve always found it hard for Japan to make a meaningful advance into Australia because they are so busy dealing with China and positioning themselves to take on the Brits and take the East Indies.  Usually by the time Japan gets enough to go after Australia, the US is in the war and Japan has to deal with them.

    • RE: Axis domination for how long?

      In my first Europe game, the Allies won after 16 rounds.  When the US liberated France, giving them 4 extra men and their economy back, they did help by attacking and taking Western Germany.  The next round, USA was able to move through Western Germany and take Berlin.  Germany was not able to properly defend it’s territories, even Germany itself, because of so much stuff committed to the Eastern Front.  Moscow did eventually fall, but it took Germany a long time to get there and cost them a ton of units in the process.  Plus, the very round Moscow fell, the US took Berlin.
      One strange thing about this game was that London was never liberated.  Once Germany took London, they built a strong force of infantry there and the US decided to bypass that to take Rome, liberate Paris and go after Berlin.  The German navy was decimated and the Atlantic was totally controlled by the US so all those troops on England were pretty much stuck there.  On the very last round, after taking Berlin, the US had enough forces left in the area and they liberated London.  Technically the game was over though because the final German round to see if they could retake their capital had passed.  It was really impossible for the Germans to retake Berlin because what was left of their forces were way east in Russia.
      In my second Europe game, the Axis won in 8 rounds.  So with those two games, it kind of goes along with history.  Shorter game/war, Axis victory.  Longer game/war, Allied victory.  One big thing that did the Axis in was that they were planning on a short, quick war to achieve their goals.  When the war dragged out, the greater Allied industrial and mineral resources told.

    • RE: Subs

      @Real:

      I have been confused about submarine rules too.  If I have 10 battleships but no destroyer and I encircle Japan which has 1 submarine, does that submarine kill my entire fleet because I dont have a destroyer or does it just sit there quietly unless the submarine wants to fight.

      If you have 10 battleships attacking 1 sub, either that sub is going to submerge or get killed with possible damage to 1 battleship.  There is NO WAY all 10 battleships would miss.
      If the sub is attacking the fleet of 10 battleships, as soon as the sub takes a shot, hit or miss, it has to suffer the enemy counter attack and with 10 battleships, the sub is going down.

      However, there is one thing I don’t like about the sub rules and that is a destroyer cancelling ALL it’s abilities, particularly the submerging ability.  I can understand a destroyer cancelling the surprise attack and being able to direct planes to attack the sub but it seems to me like a sub would still be able to submerge and escape even with a destroyer present.  So if you come along with a good size fleet and supporting aircraft and just 1 destroyer present, it pretty much means a death sentence for any and all submarines.  The only plus in that is if the defending subs get any hits, you have to take them on bigger, more expensive ships because if you do lose that destroyer, then the planes are out of that part of the battle and the subs could surprise strike the bigger ships before they get a chance to fire.  Also, the subs could simply submerge and escape to fight another day.

    • RE: Global Gaming Table

      Man, you obviously put a LOT of effort into this.  Does the map have a plexiglass covering?  EXTRA COOL!  And my friends say that I put too much effort and expense into my games.  Compared to you, I’m barely playing right out of the box.
      So you still use the paper IPC notes?  I stopped because I started using the IPC tracking chart provided at the end of the rulebook.  I find it takes up a lot less space that way.  Then again, I guess you aren’t really worried about that.
      Excellent job.

    • RE: AAG40 TableTop

      I think that table top looks great.  As it is, the table I have is not quite wide enough, just under 30 inches), so my boards have to hang out over the side a little bit.  So there is the fear that any pieces on the edge territories or sea zones may fall off the edge of the earth.  Also, I love the idea of holding all four boards in place so they don’t shift and split apart.
      However, I would personally want the sides to be much narrower, like maybe 1 inch all the way around.  I don’t use the game piece boxes and would really not want them up here because it would be wasted space for me.  I put my pieces into these containers I found in the sporting goods section at Walmart.  I think they were originally designed to hold fishing lures and such but they work great for my game pieces.  I have one for each nation, one for the common pieces and even one for my combat dice, although with the addition of France and ANZAC dice I believe I will need a bigger one.

      If you could make one like that with the smaller edge, for a cardboard one I would probably be willing to pay $20-$25.  For one made of a more permanent material such a wood or plastic, I would go as high as $40, maybe even $50.

    • RE: All these AARs; why don't you mention the French units?

      So far, I have played 2 Europe games.  In the first game, the Allies won and in the second, the Axis won.
      In the second game, it seemed as though the Axis couldn’t get a bad roll.  The French pieces were all pretty much trounced, but then again so were the British pieces.  Paris was taken in round 1 and London in round 2.  Due to a massive German buildup, Operation Barbarossa was a huge success and Italy not only cleared out Africa but managed to send a strong force up through Iraq and Persia to give the Russians a further front to worry about.  Italy ended up capturing Stalingrad.
      In the first game however, the French were very active.  The Med fleet was lost, but cost the Italians dearly (damaged BB, lost CA, lost fighter).  The French DD from SZ 72 assisted the British CA in the Med, along with a British tac bomber from South Africa, in not allowing the Italians any more naval units and keeping them penned up in Italy.  The African and Syrian French Infantry were used to guard Egypt for a while then moved via US transports to retake Southern France.  The US eventually liberated Paris, gaining the French 4 extra infantry plus their income back.  They did indeed purchase 2 tanks and an artillery and on the next round actually took Western Germany.  On the following round the US took Berlin and ended the game.
      So, at least in the first game, my French pieces saw a lot of activity which was pretty cool because I like playing with the new pieces.  It makes me wish that there were at least a few pieces stationed in French Indo-China.  I’m sure Japan would simply trash them quick but it would be neat to have them there at start.

      Sorry I’m a little late.  Didn’t notice this thread earlier.

      I preordered 2 copies from FMG, one in May and one last October.  Both arrived Aug 27.
      Played 2 games of Europe;  Game 1 went 16 rounds and Allies won.  Game 2 went 8 rounds and Axis won.  Getting ready to try out my first Global game.

      That War Game Tiger looks really nice.  Is The War Game still available anywhere?  I tried looking it up on eBay but typing in “The War Game” gave me almost 7,000 results and a lot of stuff that wasn’t even remotely related.

      Hell, everything about the jerries in WW2 is iconic. The Tiger 1, the Flak 88, the Stuka, the very recognisable helmets of the german soldiers, the Panzer IV, the He 111 and Ju 88 bombers, the Bismarck, and so on…

      God I love the german units  :-D

      Yeah, you have a point there.  Most German equipment was very unique and probably easily recognizable from any other country’s forces.
      By the way, have you ever seen footage of Chinese troops preparing defenses and getting ready for the Japanese?  In some of them, they are wearing German helmets.  I read somewhere that back before Japan was a member of the Axis with Germany, perhaps before Japan even attacked China, there were actually German military advisors in China for a short while and one of the things the Chinese got was the adaptation of the German helmets for their own troops.  It just looks weird seeing all these Chinese soldiers forming up wearing German helmets.

      @AG124:

      @ FMG - Any confirmation as to which Panzer III variant will be represented by your sculpt? An early Ausf. A-D variant, or one of the later variants? Personally, I would choose a E/F variant, but I do admit that most Panzer III variants would look very similar at this scale.

      I hope they use the version with the long barrel.  I can’t remember which variants they were, but some of the early variants had little short-barreled guns.  Same thing with early versions of the Panzer IV.  To me, those just don’t look right.

    • RE: Re: Field Marshal Games Pieces Project Discussion thread

      You said it reloader.  True, the earlier ships from the Revised through Anniversary editions did look a little crappy.  However, with the new sculpts in the 1942 edition onward, the WOTC ships look very nice.  They might be a little less detailed than the FMG pieces, but it won’t be such a big difference that they still can’t work well together.

      Unnecessary bait. first warning. - GG

      First of all, I would point out that the board is ALSO from WOTC, unless you have figured some way around that.  Okay, I know we are all permitted to have our own opinion and obviously it will be YOUR money that is being used to buy FMG pieces and dispose of perfectly good WOTC pieces.  Just like it is MY money that will also buy FMG pieces and gloriously be throwing them together with the WOTC pieces.  I usually separate my pieces by unit, but I might just throw them all in a big bag and mix them together just for kicks.  OH THE HORROR!!!

      Well, it’s a good thing that FMG decided to do both colors so as to appease both the elite separatists like yourself AND all of us infidels who dare to mix them.  One thing though, since WOTC has come out with the Stuka, I am assuming that FMG will use a different plane as a tac bomber, perhaps the Me 110.  If you are going to dispose of your WOTC pieces, then you are simply doing without the Stuka?  One thing that has prevailed in these discussions is using models that were “iconic”.  Well, the Stuka is about as Iconic as you can get for WW2 German aircraft.  Most anyone who is familiar with WW2 knows the Stuka.  Heck, WOTC even used them as fighters in the Revised edition because that plane is so well known.  Frankly, I think doing without it is plain silly.

      By the way, you shouldn’t just throw out the WOTC pieces, even if you don’t like them.  List them on eBay.  A while back I had way too many pieces so I pulled out what I wanted and listed the rest on eBay and they did quite well.  My listing of tanks alone got me over $60.  Or, you could problably sell them to someone right here on the A&A Forum.  Then you could use that money to buy more FMG pieces.  I just hate to see good game pieces go to waste.

    • RE: Re: Field Marshal Games Pieces Project Discussion thread

      By the way, I understand FMG is making Germans in both gray and black so we all can get what we want.  If you just want the FMG pieces by themselves, then you can get the gray Germans.  If you want to combine FMG and WOTC pieces, then you can get the black Germans.

      Just curious, for those of you who intend on getting the gray Germans and not using your WOTC pieces, what are you going to do with the WOTC pieces you already have?

      @Raeder:

      @WOPR:

      These game pieces are in a class of their own and quite clearly do not belong on the same game board as the WOTC pieces. Anybody who argued that the FMG Germans should be black, or that FMG shouldn’t make a Bismarck/Panther/ME-109 sculpt so that the pieces would tie in with or expand the WOTC offering must realize their arguments were silly.

      Indeed. But I’m still hoping for an FW-190 Fighter for the Germans, since I like the design better than the Me-109.

      While I agree with you that they should stick with the Bismarck for the German battleship, I MUST disagree with you on the color choice.  I want the FMG German pieces to be black so I can use both them and the WOTC pieces.  Yes, I realize the FMG pieces are higher quality but they are also planning on using different models from the WOTC pieces for more variety.  For example, they have already stated that the German armor #1 is going to be the Panzer III.  The second will probably be a Tiger I or a SPG and NOT the Panther.  Therefore, if they are all black, I can use all three armor types.  While the WOTC pieces are not as nice as the FMG pieces, they still look very nice and since they will be different models I don’t think the quality difference will be that noticable.

      If the pieces were all gray, the FMG Germans would end up looking like WOTC ANZAC units.

      I have a question about French Indo-China.  In the Global game, they have it’s IPC value added to the overall French income, but they don’t have any French troops there.  Shouldn’t FIC have at least 1 or 2 infantry there?  After all, with the addition of Europe 1940, we have French pieces.  I always thought that in the Pacific 1940 game, FIC was unoccupied simply because we didn’t yet have any French to put there.

      Wow!  I can’t believe some of you are getting copies of the game missing whole country’s forces.  I got two copies of AAE40 myself and both were complete.  The only problem was one of my German half-tracks already looks battle damaged (a big chunk out of the left front side).

      I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a game that was missing so much.  The worst problem I faced was with my copy of A&A Guadalcanal where the cruiser pieces were the wrong colors.

      OMG!!!  The turrets on the tanks and armored cars can MOVE?!?  But they are so tiny.  That is just too much.  I’m experiencing a superb quality overload here.  Now I’m even more anxious to get my set.

      Oh yeah, I guess this cancels any debate over which way the armored car turret is facing.

      @Lunarwolf:

      for me i’ll be cool with the stug and either the tiger or king tiger

      But not together with Panzer III, since they’re both on the same chassis. Kind of boring. But I’d be ok with Stug III and Tiger 1. Please no King Tiger. Not as iconic nor as cool as the Tiger.

      I think the King Tiger was a very cool tank, but you are right that it isn’t as iconic as the Tiger I.  The King Tiger came out too late in the war.  I think the first time they were used in force was during the Battle of the Bulge in December of 1944.  Also, it was a heavy tank which really outclassed most Allied tanks.  If they woulc have come earlier in the war, it might have really changed the outcome of some of the big tank battles.

      I still think it would be cool if FMG came out with a Heavy Tank set for all nations after all the country sets are complete.
