    • RE: Sea Lion worth it?

      @Commando:

      KingPin,

Your SeaLion attack may work against a weak Allied opponent or if the Brit/Allied player doesn’t put up a good UK defense. I suggest you go play some of the better A&A players online via TripleA and see how that strategy works out for you. Then report back your results. Actually if you play in the League section of the Forum, everyone can see your results. You can go the Play Boardgames section of the Forum, then League, then League Results to see a list of the better A&A  players(Gamerman, Allweneedislove, Hobo, Zigguraut, etc…). Then challenge them to a game. Good luck!  :-D

I’m sure the better A&A players would counter and blow up my strategy. I play global about 6 times a year. My strategy is a very aggressive one by the axis and if the UK builds a fortress, the release valve of an assault on Russia in Leningrad. I like it in theory because its a pick your poison for the US.

      @ghr2:

Well Kingpin, I wish your axis luck then.  It is very hard for axis to perform a successful sealion, especially after a J1 DoW.  It is even harder to take and hold hawaii while also going after dutch islands/india.  But who knows, some dice may roll your way.

Just finished a game where I was Japan, assaulted Hawaii turn 1 and held it for the whole game, while also taking the Dutch Islands. Did not get to India, mainly because the German player played very poorly, so the US needed to spend almost no attention to Europe and all in the Pacific front, where it cost the Japanese a lot of resources to maintain the sea superiority. I had to compromise land progress. Had the German player accomplished Sea Lion, or focused mainly on Russia to where the US player had to put attention in Europe or it would have fallen, then I think India could have been attained quite easily by being able to spend more resources that way.

The great thing about setting up for Sea Lion is if the US does help London from falling, that really opens up the Pacific for Japan. It’s kind of like pick your poison.

I did get some lucky dice at the beginning, or I should say the allies got unlucky dice, but nothing that out of the ordinary. The Chinese actually got very lucky dice halting some of my land progress.

    • RE: Sea Lion worth it?

I think Sea Lion is worth it, but it has to be a complete Axis operation. Japan has to attack America turn 1 and put their foot on the Americans throat in the Pacific. Crush the Hawaiin fleet, take out Philippines. Japan then needs to keep most of their focus on America the subsequent turns, making sure to hold Hawaii and beating the Americans back to their own sea zone. Taking a smaller fleet and clearing out the money islands in the Indian Ocean is the 2nd objective, to start collecting enough money to support this.

Germany and Italy then must focus solely on Sea Lion, with air assaults on the Royal Navy and bombing raids. Italy must give up on Africa for the time being and buy to stock up for the impending Russian invasion. Germany goes all out for sea lion too while also preparing somewhat for the Russian invasion too. By turn 3 London should fall to the Germans.

If all goes well, it puts America in a huge dilemma. Help in Europe to get London back? Or the more immediate threat of a rapidly growing Japanese empire that is collecting almost the same ipc as America.

If America chooses to get London back, it’ll take a few turns to get the necessary resources to be able to accomplish, while sacrificing in the pacific where Japan goes all out on America and could be sitting on their doorstep for an invasion.

If America chooses to spend most in the pacific at the more immediate threat, the Japanese empire should be strong enough financially to be able to support such an effort for a long time while grabbing money in china, Russia etc. this scenario Germany now is only fighting a one front war and can put all resources to defeating Russia. The Russians will make an immediate push to start, but Germany should regroup, concede some ground then drive them back. Use the transports wisely to put a threat to Leningrad at all times.

This is the strategy me and a friend will be deploying in a game that will be starting soon. In my group of friends the allies have been dominant recently winning 8 of the last 9 games. This is something very new as most Japanese players in our group don’t attack the us to keep them neutral while trying to eliminate china, and set up a crush of Calcutta and Sydney.

On a side note we don’t play victory cities. In order for victory, the allies must capture and hold Berlin or Tokyo for a full round for victory, and the axis must capture and hold 2 of Wash, SF, London, Moscow for a turn to win.

My group has kicked this around to come up with a solution. What we came up with is against warships it’s same rules, but if the transport is attacked by just planes that it can defend at a 1.

    • RE: What to do after Successful Sea Lion?

To the answer above we play a total VC count as a house rule of 15. When we played just one side of the board VC the axis seemingly won 80% of the time. With this it’s been pretty split.

The thought behind the Yugoslavia IC is to get some ships in the Med to get guys in Egypt for the NO And to get units in the Mid East collecting those NO. Right now with my 7 inf in Finland and units in Berlin Germany should have enough to take out the northern Russian forces, I am thinking they may retreat back to Novogrod and try to hold that. I also see where just buying a ton of land units instead and just driving them back will work. We are starting back up on Russia’s turn and if he moves his whole force into Poland that is probably what I’ll do. But if the Russians move back and regroup then I may go with the IC to try collecting those extra NO dollars.

A major in Romania is really not feasible as Germany won’t be able to get enough pieces there to stop the large Russian army from taking it. The #1 objective Germany has right now is taking Novogrod. And in 2 turns they should have it then can go from there to take the southern army out and push for Moscow.

I love that idea about bombing Gibraltar so the US can’t use it.

Right now my land forces are good in the north, with the Luftwaffe Germany should be able to drive Russia out and with the transports should be able to get to Novogrod. Germany is already pinching the Soviets up there with 9 infantry coming from Finland.

The Southern Soviet army is what I’m worried about. They outnumber southern German forces pretty good right now. That’s why i am considering a IC this turn while I got the big boost in money from the UK. Also with the plan of Italy to go all out for Egypt Germany won’t get much support from them either

I’m going to stack London with Infantry. The US is going to go all out for London, so if Germany stacks it with cheap infantry then the US will have to spend a a good amount to take it. But when Italy takes Egypt and starts taking all of the UK’s territories I may pull out of the infantry are needed in the Soviet fight.

    • RE: What to do after Successful Sea Lion?

Right now the only navy I have is the 9 transports, a cruiser and destroyer. Doesn’t hurt me that much because America bought heavy Pacific and only has one cruiser and a couple transports in the Atlantic right now. I’m anticipating them going heavy Atlantic the next few turns. I didnt buy a carrier G1 and instead bought all land units which leads me to how I stack against Russia. Right now if the Russians decide to move their army from the Baltic states to Poland, I have enough in Berlin with the Luftwaffe to destroy that army and I kind of lured them into doing that by evacuating Poland for the time being. My problem with Russia is there Southern force which I am severely outnumbered. Which is why I’m considering a factory in Yugoslavia so I can start pumping forces into the Mid East and land units in Southern Europe.

As for defending London, right now I got 3 tanks in there. I have 3 guys 3 art in west Germany I’m gonna transport up to London along with buying 3 inf and I should have a pretty big force up there for the US to try to take.

    • What to do after Successful Sea Lion?

Well I just converted my first Sea Lion. In my group Sea Lion hasn’t been attempted in so long that the UK player just didnt take it into consideration and I made him pay by taking London on G3. The UK player even got good dice on some sea battles early that took out some planes.

Now I’m looking for a direction to go in. The USA is 3 turns from doing anything in the pacific. Russia has 2 huge forces, one in Baltic states and one in Ukraine. I plan on stacking London the next few turns with over 20 infantry. I was then thinking of building a IC in Yugoslavia to clear out the med for Italy and take mid-east money, along with out-flanking the Russians. Any ideas on what to do?

    • RE: How Do You Shorten the Game?

I would say table talk is the big difference in making things take long. People lose their concentration and what not. Having your purchases made early would also be tremendous in speeding it up.

One thing to the OP is when you guys call it quits find a place to put the board where it won’t be moved or anything and pick up next week. Or you could do the long way if that’s not an option and write the pieces down and set up from that. Me and my friends are in college as well and we play once a week on Saturday nights. We have it set up on a pool table that doesn’t get touched throughout the week. It’s actually kinda cool, because those of us on each side have group chats set up on our phones where we discuss strategy all week.

Ok, the US flew a fighter on to a UK carrier and the US is not at war. If Germany were to attack that carrier does that bring the US into the war or does the plane just not fight?

    • RE: Any good ideas for Germany T-1?

You would then have to worry about the extra guys in Spain and Portugal and gives the allies a landing spot. I think a better strategy would be to attack Russia round 1, get them on the ropes buy a factory for Romania. Round 2 put a fleet in the Black Sea and turn 3 you can transport behind enemy lines and as long as the Russian player doesn’t have an immediate attack back you can then run through the NO in the middle east

I think Russia invading Japan is the way to go. Just played a game where the Russians invaded R2 and had some good rolls and had a decent force in Japan that created some problems. Seems those extra few people in Mongolia are not worth it.

    • RE: G1 J4

Last game me and my friend tried a g2/J2 strategy and we lost pretty good. Some of it had to do with some really lopsided rolling, but the axis were still in trouble.

After the loss, we offered a rematch and it was accepted and we will start Sunday. We are looking at a G1/J4. After many games, it’s apparent the war is won in Europe,  no matter how dominant Japan is in the Pacific (unless they take and hold the US). The reason we are going to go with this is to counter a few of the allies moves last game. (The US had a big fleet roaming the Mediterranean and kept Italy land locked and a threat to attack, forcing then to turtle. The Russian player attacked the Japanese with his 18 guys and was a big pest, along with the Chinese because the Japan player focused on taking the islands, and suffocating Anzac and India with convoys and bombing raids.)

So due to those moves, we feel waiting to bring the US into the war is in our best interests. First if Germany can keep the UK navy at bay, they really don’t have to worry about a big European invasion until round 6 at the earliest. It will allow Italy to get on its feet unlike last game and hopefully the Italians will have all of Northern Africa by I3 so then they can focus all on buying defense units for Europe for a big allied invasion. For Japan, a J4 attack will allow them to eliminate china and the Russian force early in the game. The Japanese then will roll some tanks through Russia to take that money. We may employ the idea of the guy above of taking American islands to deprive them of bonus’s. it will either be that or a J4 set up to take the big IPC islands. Either way the Japanese will spend almost exclusively on aircraft and attack boats, forcing the US player to check him which should allow the Germans to get to Moscow (or at least that’s how the strategy goes). We will see.

      @Gamerman01:

      @Kingpin2010:

-When a country takes another’s capital, the occupying country then gets whatever ipc the country it took collected from the turn before? (Ex. Germany collected 43 ipc at the end of their turn, UK then takes Berlin, Germany then must give the UK their 43 ipc for taking their capital.)

No, the conquering power takes all the cash on hand.  Ignore the income.

-When a countries capital is occupied (say France for example) but they still control other territories (Say 2 African territories worth 1 a piece), does France then collect 2 ipc per turn and put into their bank until their capital is liberated. Say Paris is liberated 10 turns later, would France have 20 ipc to spend then on their turn?

You can’t collect any money when your capital is in enemy hands.  Note that if you were to conquer another capital, you WOULD take their cash on hand (this isn’t income, it’s raiding)

-Say London is captured by Germany, Egypt is captured by Italy. The US then takes Egypt back while London is still occupied, could the US build a Minor IC in Egypt then? (I know if there was one there they could use it but could they build?) and to follow up if they can build one, and then London is liberated, would that factory go to the UK?

Yes.  Egypt would become CONTROLLED by the USA because London is in Germany’s control.  So US can treat Egypt like any controlled territory, but if London is liberated, all original UK territories (including Egypt of course) would IMMEDIATELY revert back to UK control.  If USA built any facilities in Egypt, they now belong to the UK.

The straight’s and Canal’s are restricted by the country who controls the designated territory (Gibralter controls the straight if Gibralter), but can subs move through canals and straights where the territory is controlled by the enemy. (Ex US controls straight of Gibralter, could Italian subs go through?

The strait of Gibraltar is the only strait or canal that enemy subs can pass through freely.

With respect, I strongly recommend that you spend an hour reading through the instruction manuals.  The answers to these questions are very clear in the manuals.
Glad you’re benefitting from the thread.  Ask any time.

Thank you. This was more of a confirmation on rules some in my group had questioned, who haven’t read the rulebook thoroughly, and some who claim to have read it and had a different interpretation.

    • RE: Global domination

      @WILD:

I have been thinking about a point system in global domination for the victory cities. Trying to figure out what the goal of the axis should be (thinking 35 vic pts)

      Capitals worth   3 pts
      regional capitals 2 pts
      other VC worth   1 pt

      Europe would look like this:

      Berlin         XXX
      Rome         XXX
Warsaw      X                 12 vic points to line (Europe)
      Paris          XXX
      Leningrad   X
      Stalingrad   X
      Moscow      XXX
      Cairo          X
      London       XXX
      Ottawa       X
      DC             XXX

      total          23 Vic pts

      Pac

      Tokyo        XXX
      Shanghai    X
Hong Kong  X                  8 more vic pts to line (20 w/Euro)
      Manila        X
      Calcutta     XX
      Sidney       XX
      Honolulu    X
      San Fran    X

total          12 vic pts    (35 total vic pts E/P)

The axis could get to the line I put in with some effort for 20 vic pts combined. I’m thinking that a win would be 25 total vic points, so they need 5 more. Axis would most likely need to drop a major capital to win.

Would the same 25 vic pts work for an allies win? They start w/24 pts, but lose them fast. Maybe 25 pts and at least one axis capital? I think they would need to liberate Paris (3 pts) to win.

Allies board could look like this:

      DC                XXX
      Ottawa          X
London          XXX        14 vic pts to line
      Moscow         XXX
      Cairo             X
      Rome/Paris   XXX
      Paris/Rome     XXX
      Leningrad      X
      Stalingrad     X
      Warsaw        X
      Berlin           XXX

      Pac
      San Fran     X
Honolulu     X               6 more vic pts to line (20 W/Euro)
      Sidney        XX
      Calcutta      XX
      Manilla        X
      Hong Kong   X
      Shanghai     X
      Tokyo         XXX

Allies would most likely need to lib Paris, and Capture Rome/Berlin or Tokyo for 25 vic pts? Maybe crush Japan to get to the VC in Asia?

Really like this idea with the point system. This is one thing with my group that we find hard is getting the right victory conditions. Like the current game we have going, Japan has a might empire and has 6/8 in the Pacific, but the European theatre is a different ballgame and the Axis only control 5 of the 11.

    • Grinding war advice/places to go

So after about 15 hours of game time we are at about a standstill. Ill give in depth detail about each country, I’m the UK so allied advice would help.

Germany: was very close to getting to Moscow, but spread themselves to thin and now getting beaten back to their original territory. Lost Normandy and Paris for a round but knocked UK out of Europe. Building a nice infantry/artillery army to withstand an all out assault. Still has big Air Force of about 7 fighters and 4 tactical bombers. Collecting about 35 ipc

USSR: Was on the verge of defeat, but some good moves and rolling, the Soviets are pushing to Berlin. Decent sized units moving into Romania where they Germans and Italians are trying to fend them off. Making about 40 ipc. Got to start worrying about the Japanese (more on that later)

Japan: really been the dominant power of the game. Owns all of the pacific besides Anzac. Took Inida and china pretty early in the game. Has tanks rolling up through the Middle East. Just lost most of fleet in battle with us, but killed all their fleet so it was a wash. Making about 80 ipc.

USA: Has been a pretty much non-factor. Lost pacific fleet twice to the Japanese in big battles. Been a little pain to the axis in Europe. Held Gibralter for a good period, took and owns Norway, supplies some war boats to protect the UK fleet from German air units. Not much influence anywhere outside of mainland US. Making about 77 ipc

UK: lost India pretty early to a Japanese all out assault. Held Egypt for a very long time just lost it but have a few tanks rolling up through to take it back. Pumping about 3-4 transports full of units onto mainland Europe every turn with 3 bombardments and 5 planes. Italian navy becoming a big issue. Collecting about 35 ipc

Italy: been kept in the Mediterranean for all of the game besides the last round. Huge navy built up using bonus’s. pumping units into Europe being a lifeline to the German survival. Making about 40 ipc

Anzac: looked like Japs were going to target Anzac after India but battled it out with US. Anzac lost its navy though. Just starting to get on its feet collecting about 15. Now got a transport in southern pacific, Indian Ocean with no Japanese immediate threat, could become a factor.

Thoughts? Ideas? It’s been a standstill for about the last 5 rounds. USSR making headway into Getmany is big but a Japsnes tank army of about 12 units is becoming an issue from the Middle East. Italy getting out if the Mediterranean is huge with a big navy.
