      Quick question while on the subject of transports.

      At the beginning of turn 3, 5 German transports are in SZ 114, along with 1 German Cruiser, 1 German Destroyer, and 1 German Battleship. There is also a Russian Cruiser there. If Germany declares war on Russia on that turn, can those transports load units from Germany and make an amphibious assault on Novgorod that same turn?

      What if there is also a sub in sz 115? If the transports have already participated in combat in sz 114, can they do it again in sz 115?

      Monkey, every axis player has to do Barbarossa one way or another. Sea-lion generally is impossible to hold no matter what, so it really doesn’t matter when Japan declares war, because if Japan can gain a significant advantage on J2, and the US focuses on stopping sea-lion, than you can easily win the Pacific.

      Well he generally will buy a DD to supplement his fleet, but other than that, he has a 1 BB, 1 CR, and 1 DD to defend his transports.

      And when we played a Europe game, he had a CR and a DD, so I used both Russian fighters to weaken his navy so I could finish it off with 2 UK bombers. I missed with both fighters and only got 1 hit with the bombers, while he managed to wipe out all four planes.

      As Japan Wait until J4 to declare war, and forget India. Go for Sydney and Hawaii.

      As Germany, build a Navy G1, and clear sz 110 and sz 111 completely, but don’t use your battleship. Instead, keep it 112 with the rest of your navy and use it to convoy disrupt UK. It’s okay if you lose some of your airforce dealing with his scrambled fighters; it’s worth destroying the UK airforce.

      Do a G4 Barbarossa and once you have taken Novgorod, slow down moving from the Northern position while you push hard in the south. Once you have control of the Caucasus, you should making plenty of cash to hold back the Western Allies.

    • RE: German Baltic Transport Shuck

      Well here is a more detailed plan of what I believe the German player is going to do. (This is a face to face game)

      G1: Buys 2 transports, 1 minor IC in Romania
      Attacks sz 110 and sz 111, but not sure about what he will bring.

      G2: buys 2 more transports and any combination of ground units.
      Moves units along the Russian border

      G3 and beyond: Buys 5 inf 5 art (35 IPCs), plus tanks in Romania
      Lands guys in Either Novgorod or Baltic states, together with his land based forces if he chooses the latter.

      My problem is that if he lands all is forces in the Baltic states on G3, he will have a force of 20+ inf, 9 arty, and 6 tanks. Even if I can counterattack, there’s no way I can have any success against it, not to mention being susceptible to counterattacks by his forces in Romania and Slovakia.

      I was thinking that a good strategy might be to buy a bunch of bombers as UK or US, and then smash his transports, because his transports will be in sz 115, and he will not be able to scramble any fighters. What do you think of this?

    • RE: What Do Do With French Units (F1) That Survive German Attack

      I think that if you don’t hit the entire UK navy G1, it will comeback and bite you later. America won’t have to build as many warships, and England will have an easier time landing troops in Norway or some other inconvenient place.

      If the UK navy is dead, you are free to convoy disrupt and protect your shorelines.

    • German Baltic Transport Shuck

      If the Germans are going to build 4 transports on G2, and then 5 inf and 5 arty every respective turn afterward, how should I go about stopping them as Russia if I know the German player has the intent of constantly landing man in Novgorod every turn?

      You have already won. Just don’t jump the gun now that Germany is weak as balls. Play it patiently and allow the US to build a large landing force of around 10-15 transports. You can afford to wait now that Germany is so far behind.

      It really doesn’t matter what you do with the French at this point.

    • RE: Which country do you go with now that you know how to play a3

      @Noll:

      I disagree Commando Bravo.

      Some ppl buy 2carriers 1bb and move everything to Hawaii,

      Some ppl build 3bombers 1cv, move the starting bomber in EUS and produce 3 more there. Carrier in sz10.

      Some ppl build full Atlantic and make sure Hawaii and Anzac are turtled enough.

      Some ppl mass prouce bombers to sink any Italian/German navy or reinforce Russia with them.

      Some ppl spam carriers/fighters.

      And I could add more.

      Agreed. US has a vast array of options at its disposal, and is especially reactive to the Axis.

    • RE: Alpha 3 opening moves for Germany?

      Build a Navy G1.

      • 1 sub, 1 Aircraft Carrier, 1 Destroyer.

      With a Navy, Germany can:

      • Disrupt English Convoys
      • Open up more possibilities in the Baltic Sea
      • Force the Allies to build more warships

      At the beginning you can do one of two things, both having the same result but with different liabilities.
      Option 1: (Mutually destructive and my preferred option)
      sz110: 2 subs, 2 fights, 2 tacs, 2 strat bombers
      sz111: 2 subs, 2 fights, 2 tacs

      This option will encourage the British player to scramble, because he can cause damage to your airforce. However, this will give your navy even more reign over the UK because most if not all of their fighters will be shot down, meaning they have little ability to counter attack. On the other hand, your airforce will likely have suffered several casualties as well. But, by preserving your Battleship, your total navy will consist of 1 BB, 1 CR, 1 DD, 1 AC loaded with 2 fights, and any number of subs which you constantly add each turn. This gives you great power over the now weaker UK.

      Option 2: (less risky, but less damage done to UK)
      @Noll:

      sz110 send 1battleship, 1submarine, 3fighters, 3tac.bombers.
      sz111 send 2submarines, 1fighter, 1tac.bomber, 2bombers.
      sz106 send 2submarines.

      This will likely discourage any scrambling and thus your entire airforce will be preserved. However, this will likely leave your BB vulnerable to a counter attack, which means having a weaker navy and the British Airforce stronger. On the positive side, your airforce will also remain at full strength, giving you greater flexibility on both defense and offense.

      Of course, this is simply my own preferred strategy. Nothing dictates that the Germans MUST have a navy, but I personally believe its a very important addition.

    • RE: G1 Attack on Russia?

      A G1 attack will lock you in Russia for the rest of the game, and with a big chunk of the UK Fleet alive, the allies will have an easy time opening up a second front fairly soon. The UK will not have to defend from sea-lion, so Italy will be dead. And because you are going for a long-term victory in the south, I think that the UK needs to be crippled for this to work effectively.

      I would want to know what your G1 purchases are, but I have my doubts that anything can justify a G1 attack.

    • RE: JAPTICS

      @Alsch91:

      There’s almost never 3 infantry on Malaya in games I play.  If UK leaves them there, that’s pretty inefficient use of its resources.
      Keeping India’s income as low as possible is way way more important than keeping Anzac’s income low.

      8 extra infantry for India is a whole lot worse than 3 extra destroyers for Anzac.
      3 IPCs indeed is a lot for a power that makes 3-5 IPCs.

      You’re right that Solomon is easy to take - though I’d definitely argue it’s not worth a 7 IPC transport - but it’s two spaces from Hawaii.  Holding on to Solomon will take a disproportionately large amount of Japan’s naval resources.  Often the benefit is not worth the cost, especially considering the opportunity cost of using a transport on an invasion that will probably get it destroyed.

      touche.

      @Gargantua:

      Solomons is best taken when you are unable to take Malaya, or the FIRST turn you go to war against Anzac, and want to prevent thier NO’s by capturing JUST 1 territory.

      I’m going to go with Alsch here, there are times it’s right - but it’s not as valuable as it used to be. Probably best in a j2 attack.

      I agree with ALL of you guys Malay is important to take, but you have to include the resources you need to take each territory. Malay usually has 3 infantry on it. So you need a ground force of at least 3 or 4 to prevent the risk of losing your planes. Solomon Islands require no effort to take, simply at the possible expense of 1 transport.

      I assume that your already going to be doing damage to India enough that 3 IPCs is not that big of a difference. ANZAC can inflict some real pain if it gets too big so I would rather take the Solomon Islands to prevent ANZAC from becoming too powerful, because India will already be dying.

    • Russia - North or South?

      I just thought I would get a general strategy thread going about killing Russia. The primary question is, do you, as Germany, push south towards the rich territories of Caucasus and Volgograd, or do you head North towards Leningrad? Or, do you go in both directions?

      Here’s my view:

      North.
      Advantages:
      -Easy capture of Leningrad
      -Closer to Major IC in Germany
      -Reinforcements can be ferried from the Baltic
      -Quicker route to Moscow after Lenningrad

      Disadvantages:
      -Not a lot of valuable territory, besides Leningrad
      -As such, not a huge net gain for Germany

      South
      Advantages:
      -Very valuable territories
      -Big net gain for Germany
      -Possibly reinforced from the Black Sea

      Disadvantages:
      -Hard to reinforce initial army
      -Stalingrad is deep in Soviet territory
      -Easier for Russians to Reinforce

      Both
      Advantages:
      -Same as above
      -Splits Russian army

      Disadvantages:
      -Very hard to protect both armies from counterattacks
      -Splits your own army
      -Requires IC in Romania, or expensive mechs to reach the Southern army from Germany

      I tend to head both directions, but I feel that I don’t have enough strength once I get to the Ukraine/Belarus area. Where do you guys head? Also, how many IPCs are you spending in Russia each turn, and where are those units going?

      Lots of questions, answer as best you can. Thanks!

      @Alsch91:

      Uh… but Malaya is worth 3 IPCs and is right in front of your 36 fleet.  Why would you not take a valuable territory away from India?  Derp.  I could just say that if you have Malaya you don’t need Solomon.   :lol:

      Barney -
      Shantung is worth 2 IPCs.

      Again, Malay only stops 1 ANZAC NO, so your choice, is “do I want 3 IPCs, while taking away 5 from ANZAC, or do I just want to take 10 IPCs from ANZAC?”

      I prefer the latter, so I go with Solomon.

      @Alsch91:

      I was assuming that Japan takes Malaya, which disrupts the other Anzac NO.
      In Alpha 2, the 5/7 NO was very achievable, and could be fought for. Â The Alpha 3 version can effectively be ignored.
      If you’ve got Malaya and any of those four island territories, you’ve stopped both Anzac NOs.

      Agreed, but then again, if you have the Solomon Islands, you don’t need Malay.

      Usually after the Germans lose the battle of Moscow, or when Japan’s navy is so crippled and it doesn’t have enough resources to make anymore progress, we end the game in surrender.

    • RE: JAPTICS

      @Alsch91:

      I considered mentioning Solomon Islands, but after the NO change in Alpha 3, it’s not nearly as important as before.
      The current NO is impossible and so irrelevant.
      The Anzac NO can also be disrupted by taking New Britain, Dutch New Guinea, or New Guinea.  All three of those are harder to take back simply because they’re farther away from Hawaii.

      In Alpha 2, which I still very much enjoy playing, I would put Solomon Islands on my list.  Very important, but difficult, spot to hold.

      Well, Dutch New Guinea does not count as an originally controlled ANZAC territory, so that would only disrupt 1 NO. All of the outer territories are within range of Hawaii, so if the US wants to liberate an Island it will, but it will take some ground resources.

      I am not sure if I understand what your saying, though. In alpha 3, ANZAC needs the Solomon Islands in order to have either NO. Obviously the NO for Japan is out of the question, but I still think that, or New Britain, is important for hindering ANZAC.

      Can the US, while not at war, move its Atlantic fleet into Seazone 106, and its ground forces into New Brunswick/Nova Scotia?

      If not, then what exactly is the purpose of Canadian territories?
