I think that longer games (played with NO’s) definitely favor the axis. After many turns japan and germany typically are earning way more ipc’s than the allies and it’s hard to keep up with that for long.

RE: All infantry on R1: does it still apply?posted in 1941 Scenario
the last time i played as russia i used the 5 inf and 3 armor ratio for most of the game. i was reasonably successful with it.

RE: GB Heavy Bombersposted in 1941 Scenario
our group has the same "oh no… heavy bombers… it’s game over… AAAAAHHHHH!!!..) gaming style, i think if it continues i’m gonna suggest what i think are the tournament rules from revised: SBR - roll 2 dice, take the better result and add 1… attacking - roll 2 dice and use only one of them

RE: Why is 1942 scenario so unpopular???posted in 1942 Scenario
my group will be playing our 3rd game of 42 next time (hopefully this weeked!!). i think everyone has been playing 41 because it’s different than the revised set up, or like us we played 3 games of 41 first and now are going through 42.
maybe we’ll play pacific next or ‘gasp’ the other big ww2 strategy game… (name of game omitted for fear of rebuttal on A&A forum)

RE: Serious Game Flawposted in 1941 Scenario
i think calling it a game ender is a bit much. getting heavy bombers is a game ender lol

RE: How does everyone feel about the new transport rules?posted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
maybe i wasn’t clear on my preference…
i like the new rules and was excited to play that way… unfortunately i was outvoted 2 to 1… now i’ve been no voted for the "china as it’s own country option… IC, different values for territories, NO’s etc… i get to try that one out for the first time on saturday… we’ll see how it goes

How does everyone feel about the new transport rules?posted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
maybe this has been covered, but i was just wondering what people think of the new rules regarding transports? the group i play with hated them right away and we’ve actually changed it back. they have always played with the transports as fleet fodder strategy and i haven’t played nearly as many games as them (i have maybe 25 total games compared to their maybe 300-500, i have no idea lol) so maybe my opinion is a bit jaded…

RE: Tech roles and YOUposted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
i buy one in round 1, except as japan in 41 (round 2) or italy (never), then maybe more to keep up with the enemy, if they have multiple techs.

RE: Iceland…posted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
what if germany took it?, i’m sure it could be used as an airbase somehow

RE: After Action Reportsposted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
@TG:
Sounds like an incredible match. You have to love games likes these.
uk built IC in eastern canada uk1 and one in india uk2. they took france round 1 but lost it to italy right away. thay pumped out loaded transports from canada to africa and to keep gibralter, 3 tanks per turn in india and bombers for SBR.
What was the rationale for a Eastern Canada IC?
i’m not too sure what he was thinking. it’s still one turn to morroco from england, right? or because it’s safe from SBR perhaps, i’ll have to ask him and let you know…

Title: take 10 paces, then draw (1942)
Date: 1/31/2009
Special Rules: techs and NO’s
Victor: none unfortunately
Game Length: 8 hours, 7 or 8 rounds maybe
Bias: we’re pretty close in skill level
Description: we may have set a record, the 1st 4 countries in rd 1 got tech with only 1 die!! japan got jet fighters, russia got rockets, germany got mech inf, uk got super subs (lol), no die for italy and US bought one but didn’t hit right away. tech was further pursued by ger, russia, uk and us with russia getting war bonds and US getting heavy bombers.
japan bought IC for manchuria, took out flying tiger J1, and built up pacific fleet. i threatened WUS and eventually took alaska, but lost the higher priced islands near the end of our game (philip taken back, and next turn would have got back other islands)
russia hung in there til the end, losing russia during our last round. it would have been retaken next turn. they went with a good mix of mostly inf and some tanks, and held the line quite well.they were making great money near the end (40ish with obj) but never were able to threaten germany.also took the man ic for a turn, i stupidly took off my fighters to land on carrier to threaten us.
germany took karelia right away and never lost it, kept their navy going a little bit and kept paying off damage to his IC’s. lost france on uk1 based on bad dice vs eastern canada fleet. they kept trading territories with russia and eventually took the capitol.
uk built IC in eastern canada uk1 and one in india uk2. they took france round 1 but lost it to italy right away. thay pumped out loaded transports from canada to africa and to keep gibralter, 3 tanks per turn in india and bombers for SBR.
italy had to take back france right away so they had to ignore africa 1st turn, also got attacked by uk in libya during uk1. italy could never get a good hold on africa and the multinational fleet just outside of mad was too much for her fleet to handle. during the last round she finally had a tank in africa and would have been able to take it unmolested (too little too late)
US split her monies between both theaters, and after getting heavy bmbrs spent alot of money on them. they kept sending troops to morocco and to gibralter whern necessary, eventually took some of japan’s southern islands near the end. they were primed to attack with their fleet and 4 Hbombrs from phillip but lost all of it during J’s last round.Observations/Recommendations: obviously tech played a huge role, heavy bombers maybe are still too strong? it was a well fought game, we need to start earlier or try to start up where we left off. we talked about playing some time w/o techs to make it more “pure”. we’ll see, i’m looking forward to our next marathon. IMO the axis were 2-3 turns from victory, i’m sure the allied player would disagree with me, but who cares what he thinks?

RE: After Action Reportsposted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
keplar galvin,
With this recent winning streak, I am beginning to think that the Allies need a bid in 1941. A lot of you guys are still fresh, but I a few grizzled vets admit to the uphill climb the Allies have.
Also, if you write a short AAR of why (strategy only) the Axis won the other two games, I’d be happy to include them.
sure thing… our first game is hard to judge because it was the first and everything is a little bit different… the allies didn’t do much and ultimately lost because they forgot about the german paratroopers, doh!! german paratroopers descended upon london with it’s very weak defense (maybe 2 units total? plus antiaircraft shots) no IC’s were built by anyone and japan ruled the pacific and crushed china rather quickly…
in our second game, i played as the allies and eventually lost russia and gave up (it was very late by theat point, mistakes were being made by all) i failed to place an IC in india much to my demise, i eventually placed one in s africa to try to help the us in the pacific and to help in africa but it was too late (and too far away). i got super subs as the uk (crappy!!). germany built mostly bombers and tanks and got heavy bombers too. japan built an IC in manchuria and was pumping tanks out of there, and dominated the pacific.
it seems like russia needs more help in this game then before, i’m sure we’ll eventually figure out the proper strategy to make it work better. i am already looking forward to our next game in 41 with me as the allies, i have some things that i want to try next time… til then 42 awaits!!

RE: After Action Reportsposted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
Title: continued axis domination-41 scenario
Date: jan 10
Special Rules: techs + NO and a couple house rules
Victor: axis won by concession
Game Length: 6.5 hours; 6 or 7 rounds
Bias: 3 person game, allies=wily veteran; japan=wily veteran, germany+italy=me (not as good as them, still a little green)
Description: germany got paratroopers 1st turn (good, but not what i wanted), failed at sinking uk fleet, took karelia and held it for most of the game and a couple others, sacrificed everything at egypt for italy… mostly bought armor and inf and some bombers… took moscow (5 armor) on turn 5? with 5 tanks, 2 bombers, one para w/ minimal losses
russia bought armor all game long and a research die on turn 2 (got paratroopers though, bummer for him, anything else could have changed the game) and suffered from really bad rolls, they battled with germany a bit but couldn’t keep up
japan did things a little differently…. lost all 4 fighters chasing the US carrier in the south (not sure of the sea zone) but it just slowed him down a bit, built IC in manchuria for armor pumping into china, russia, and eventually india (game over before india however), they got long range aircraft (didn’t really come into play too much), IC in india kept japan fleet split up but they still ruled the pacific, china was a minor thorn in their side but not too bad
uk built IC in india right away, built mostly tanks there; did SBR on germany; took back karelia once (maybe 2 times) but it was taken back by germany right away, also took france near the end (taken back right away again); they pestered japan a little in the south pacific
italy took egypt, but never pushed hard into africa; they were mostly used to fortify german territories and they softened up russia for germany, only country to not buy research
US spent money in both theaters, also bought IC for brazil and used it for sneaky d day attack (he claimed at it’s purchase it was to help with africa, mr tricky lol), did SBR on germany and a couple times on manchuria (no anti aircraft there), took france once near the end but it was too lateObservations/Recommendations: this was our third game of 41, axis won all 3 times, we each had a shot as the allies; it seems like russia needs something to keep them alive longer, we’ll see. 1st time IC built in india, it definitely helped US by diverting some of the japanese fleet, and US could spend more money in atlantic because of it. brazil IC was good idea but perhaps IMO those monies could have been spent elsewhere. money was spent on tech but it didn’t change much, NO’s def favor the axis so far… next up 42 scenario!!!
