      I liked The Pacific better.  The part I like most is there is also a documentary series called Hell in the Pacific that kind of goes with it and in it they interview some of the same guys portrayed in The Pacific, and one of them is Eugene Sledge who wrote a classic book about the pacific war from the soldiers’ point of view.  I think together the two series do a great job.

      Usually, but if the casualty is a sub the also gets a Surprise Strike, it will fire back, as fire is simultaneous.

      here is a 2009 post from me at HGD: ( note this applies to when AA50 came out)

      All you have to do to extrapolate these GDP numbers is to divide the GDP by 15

      using 1941 numbers:
      Axis: 911 divided by 15= 60.73

      Allies: 1798 divided by 15= 119.86

      IN AA50 the axis are at 60 total

      IN AA50 the allies are at 112 total

      This is why the game is somewhat accurate, and the balancing is all force projection with the advantage going to the axis, and the US and UK player facing the commitment of their forces all over the map.

      For 1940 you have to make additional considerations because the game will have say 50% more territories than AA50, so the number you divide will be smaller and the total will be greater in the game so that you don’t have too many worthless territories.

      So lets do June 4th, 1940:

      Germany: 387, plus Poland 76.6, Czecho-Slovakia 30.3, Netherlands 44.5, Belgium 39.6, Norway 11.6, Denmark 20.9, Austria 27=637.5

      42.5 IPC

      Italy:147 = 9.8 IPC

      Japan: 192= 12.8 IPC

      Allies:
      USA: 943
      US colonies: 23.9
      Total: 966.9= 64.4 IPC

      UK: 316
      UK colonies 14.4
      Total 330.4= 22 IPC

      France 82
      French colonies 10.9
      Total 92.9= 6.2 IPC

      USSR 417
      Baltic states 12.9
      Total 429.9= 28.6 IPC

      Now you have to account for peace time status vs. total war mobilization for both USA and USSR. The amount of GDP used for wartime purposes was at least twice as great for the current belligerents than neutrals. So i would put USA and USSR at 50% rate with the difference going to domestic purposes.

      So problem solved. Game balanced unless your trying to make the game unhistorical with notions that the axis had ZERO chance to win, which is a bogus argument even by economics.

      Like Vance said, this new 1941 game is to expand their customer base. G40 is way to complicated for noobies. A game that goes about two hours to introduce AA to the masses is ingenious marketing. Many AA gamers have been playing since the 80’s (that’s when I started about 30 years ago w/classic). When revised came out it re-sparked the game for those of us that played years ago, and introduced it to more ppl. AA50 was really cool, but short lived (no re-print?). G40 is kinda over the top, it is an awesome game, but lets face it who has 2 days (20+hours) to play it (just a handful of us hehe).

      Now those 30 to 40 year olds (like me) will get this new 1941 game for several reasons.

      To get the new pieces for house rules etc… awesome. To play with their kids, and bring them into the AA world in just 2 hours. The hardest part of games like G40 or even 1942 is it takes to damn long, and youngsters just don’t have the attention span. Now these new players will introduce this new game to their friends, and the customer base doubles. Face it, the new generation is the target here (intro), not those of us that want more.

      I’ve looked around for AA1942 in big box stores, and don’t find it to often.

      Completely agree with all the words there.

      You mentioned a lack of copies of Spring 42 and it has also been mentioned before in one site that Spring 42 is running out. I wasn’t sure if this game would complement Spring 1942 but now it seems it will replace it and become the simple version of the game, which is my favorite (I like AAG40 and AA50 but I prefer simpler games).

      How about giving the Cruiser an AA roll of 1, or 2 on a 12d system! Keeping everything else the same! This would make the cruiser a little better buy and not be overpowering in a naval battle but would be an excellent carrier escort.

      ok so i reivised it a bit.

      #1 is now called -  Deck Guns: Your Transports now defend at 1. If a sea-zone that is under attack is left with only defending transports, all transports are destroyed instantly.

      2 - ( OK so i got a couple questions. if a cruiser engaged in sea combat during an amphibious assault, can it also bombard? <- i dont think so. Also, if it bombarded would it be able to deploy infantry during the assault? <- i dont think so either. thats the problem with having the cruiser carry the infantry. I want the cruisers to carry infantry because more people will buy them but i think that ability would go unused unless they just want the cruiser to ignore combat and just drop 1 infantry.) if i am wrong and they can drop while bombarding then i would love to have cruisers be able to carry inf. rather than destroyers. what would this be called if it just allowed cruisers to carry an infantry.

      3 - ( basically an offshore bombardment ) but i can see what you mean by it being too complicated and possible overpowered…. what would replace this? how about:            Operational Major Industrial Complexes located on your capital have no deployment limit?

      4 - i like this. this would be a thrid research chart so you can get more Mech. infantry researches and then they would be a great unit!

      5 - what about triple the amount? quadruple? or take the roll you got, and triple/quadruple it?

      6 - yes. Example: planes move into a territory, that territory contains 5 AA guns, a major IC, an airbase and a naval base. Before interception the AA guns fire on all planes, then interception ( air combat ) then the surviving bombers are assigned to the bases and the bases fire.        i just found it wierd that AA guns do noting against a SBR. if i dont use this reseasrch chart then i might make this my house rule. i dont know how big of an effect it would have… especially if i had radar lol.

      Just think of what a rich country could do with all of the Tech.'s  Rockets Heavy Bombers Paratroops Etc.
      In the days when we used to play classic we would get bored and change things up,  and one of the things we did was to make Tech.'s easier to obtain.  One was to make it so at the end of your turn you would roll a six sided and what you rolled is what you got,  each turn you would do that and on turn six you had every one.  One of the other versions was to pay 5$ and roll and what you got was what you got,  another variation was to have the free roll but you needed a six to break through to Technology
        When certain counties got certain Tech.'s early then it was over fast, I think the new game is going to be no different with the results,  it will just be slightly more complex
        One of my favorites was to write on the backs of the territory markers the Tech  like Rockets do that to 10  and then on another 10 put the next Tech. until each Tech. is represented 10 times.  Put all those in a cup and at the end of your turn you draw one,  when you get 3 like Tech.'s its yours. One other detail you can give one in exchange to your opponent once per turn. Pick yours that you want to get rid of and take one from any opponent, and you can trade freely with your side .
      You cant share Tech.'s but you can make it easier for your side
      Thats one I would like to see in the Books
        Each country gets to draw once per turn
        If ya want to change up the same old boring game  try it

      Well i was misinformed then.Do you think there is going to be a “global edition” or something that improves on AAG in the near future or do you think that AA42 is the standard and AAG is the deluxe for the next 5+ years ( excluding AA50 reprint )

      My only complaint would be that your air bases have a jet plane symbol, but I could still live with that.

      From what I can see, it’s not actually a jet but rather a picture of a bomber showing the fuselage and wings but not the engines.

      Thanks for the support, but who are we kiding? they’re comercial jets.

      well i just got the older Pacific and Europe yesterday. i guess ill just print off the new rules when they come out ( tomorrow supposedly )
