      Yes i really miss all of the unique  rules these older games had to offer. Like the j1 kill everything rules, or the allies paying for oil rule in europe. Convoying was wayyy beter in these games, but the problem i have with it is that its not an attack. Maybe we should have the ships roll dice and whenever they hit, the other player loses money, ON THE TURN OF THE AGGRESOR! The problem i have is that by the time its the enemies turn, they have destroyed  you fleet that was blockading you convoy. Having it be an attack would fix so many issues when it comes to convoying.

      Reason TO sack the transports (I’m not in full support, but if I was feeling froggy, Borneo would be at least one target and here’s why it works, espceially now):
      With the Indies fleet gone, it forces the sub to take out one, and a FTR to take out one transport.  If the UK has any ship left, plus if you move the US Pac fleet to Solomons (and take it) turn 1, you are now in position to PROTECT Borneo w/both fleets (include a US/UK buy for Pac fleet).  Now Japan can try to retake Borneo, but at what cost? They’re down a BB/CV/2FTR at this point, and if UK/US buy Pac fleet, you are now talking about having to take Borneo with remaining Indies UK ships and India buy, which would force you to move almost everything, but then the US could also just move to Iwo, and be in position to off balance Japan.  Or Japan is just going to have to live with being at -4.  You can do this on UK2 if you want, but I would only cough up one CA and have the US in the Solomons protecting a counter.

      I agree with Karl’s assessment.  For the OOB set-up, Sea Lion seems like the only viable option.

      Even then, the Allies might still have the advantage.  But taking London early on (by G3) should give Germany a decent shot at the W.

      If there is a winning strategy for OOB that doesn’t involve taking London early, then it would need a strong naval component, or the Allies will set up in France and USA will build a major in Norway.

      I played a Europe OOB game the other day against my dad and local guys back in my home town of Boise Idaho and got absolutely killed as the Axis.  I gave the allies a 28 ipc bid to counter what they claimed was an overwhelming Axis advantage.  (probably very stupid on my part… sigh)  Anyhow, they used the bid to prevent the Axis from sinking the British fleet.  It was downhill there on out.

      My questions:

      (1) if you don’t/can’t do sealion are the Axis doomed OOB?

      (2) did Larry say Alpha 3.9 translates to Europe only?  If so, what national objectives do you use?

      I am heading back up to Boise for rematch and want to use updates rules if so.

      Axis are not doomed at all. I find it harder to win as the Axis when I’ve done sealion then when I didn’t. Doing Sealion means putting too much resources in London.

      There are no official rules for europe only. A couple of threads down there’s a discussion to wich NO’s etc are being used.

      Thanks Axisplaya… that’s one for you, one for me… I think the Axis are advantaged in Alpha3.9.  The allies can’t stop both of the axis, and have to play a very tricky game of beating down on one as fast they can while trying as best they can to contain the other. Very hard to do unless the Axis make some stupid moves.

      What I remember about this game was that Germany got killed round1 but then was allowed to dogpile against the USSR.

      If you want to see some good games (well, at least the ones I have played as I don’t know much about the others) look at the G40 championship game between me and MR. Green (that I lost) or the first game between me and Gamerman (that I won) in the 2012 league.  Those were pretty even fight up to the last couple rounds. Very dramatic as these things go.

      that’s wrong!! yeah you need to defend but don’t give up all that money and territory. the key to defending Russia is simple: layers of defense. have a defense line at the boarder and each territory line after that. i.e. Novgorod, Belarus, pripet marshes, western Ukraine, Ukraine.  just build inf. and a few tanks. make the Germans pay for each bit of ground they take. but its most important that you don’t let them destroy your whole army. what i mean is don’t bunch up your forces at one defense line. do some small counter attacks.

      also don’t give up Leningrad or Stalingrad with out a major fight. if you do the Germans get a minor factory. the same goes with the Ukraine.

      This tends to work quite well for me, as long as i don’t leave stacks within reach of germanys tank stacks. I’ve found it’s a rare day that germany can keep the supply lines constant on it’s march to Russia. I can usually chop them up at some point or another.
