RE: Game Question On UK1 Attack Possibilityposted in Axis & Allies North Africa
No replay.
But basically in Rommel’s Last Push scenario, if the Germans take Mersa Brega G1, the UK can counter attack very strongly and more likely than not wipe the German army out, making even threatening Cairo a near impossibility.
If the Germans/Axis wait to build up 1 or 2 turns, then the possibility of even credibly threatening Cairo likewise diminishes significantly.
Thus, the only reliable strategy for the Axis is to hold back and go for limited victory.
That’s how I see it.

Isn’t there a UK tank in the mix, too? Out of Benghazi? And a fighter?
I will look at the set up.

FYI - changed the title, as it was too strong a statement, and probably not accurate

@Karl7 we did have a turn 5 axis win by going around tobruk. That was fun
I do feel Brits have a much better chance if they give up tobruk and fight in mersa mutruh
Interesting, yeah, I am the first to concede that I haven’t played the game that much to be an expert.
But the fact that UK can throw a 50%ish attack and wipe out the german spearhead, safeguarding Cairo round 1 seems pretty huge.
Sure, if the dice flop for UK, they will have to fall back towards Cairo, but even a trade would be pretty devastating for Germany in my opinion…
But totally willing to be wrong on this

@karl7 Well fought Karl7. I’m only a little fish here in this pond, but I appreciated the innovation, trying to change the math by going for the neutrals. I’ve wondered whether S. American and Southern African money might be worth the cost and delay. Probably not.
At some point in time, we might consider amending the bid placement rules to spice up oob. Andrew has proved that the “central powers” ie those in the middle of the board have a huge advantage. Don’t get me wrong, Andrew. You are very good. But you choose the Axis for a reason. As a play tester, I know that skill is not the only factor effecting the outcome of a game.
So Karl, please don’t give up on OOB as hopeless, but push for change in bid placement. I have some ideas about that, but I’ll bet you do too.
well, I think I could beat a lesser player than Andrew, but he has it down to a science.
In the last couple games, I was able to get the upper hand overall, but then he skillfully just crammed one side of the board with both Axis powers for the win. It’s the winning move! LOL.
In this last game Germany was checked and we were closing in and Japan was dong ok. But then Germany dived for India leaving Russia free. So even if Allies could get India back from Japan it was hopeless.
Game before this (?) Japan was basically defeated but it cut and run for middle east and nukes everything in sight for the win.
That being said some of the games were just straight up Axis wins with no hope for allies.

I always find it fascinating how in a game that does involve luck in quite a substantial way, some players are still so consistently strong and come out top of the league year in year out.
JWW used to say that.
Strategy/skill/experience/tactics, not blundering, and ability to adapt, like to bad dice, is much more influential than dice in G40 A&A. I think was true of AA50, too. Did I mention the psychological warfare, and imposition of will? Even speed of play can affect.
Consider - Every move in Monopoly except whether to get out of jail by paying money or using a card, is determined by dice or random cards. The entire path of your token for the entire game is pre-determined and you make decisions based on that. Yet with such a big role for dice, a better and more experienced player will rarely lose to an average or casual player.
I’m hoping for comments to this one. Other game or any other contest examples?
I’ll bite…
I’d say G40 can be as Gamer says, but also the opposite. If you are playing a tight game, 1 bad roll can sink you. You miscalc your allied main fleet defense off Gib by say 10% and Germany swoops down on a 80%+ hit and you get rocked… night night…
I always say G40 and its derivatives are somewhat unforgiving. Yes you can recover from bad dice if you are the better player, but in even matches if one side gets rocked by dice, hard to come back. Especially for allies as they need almost 4x the amount of stuff to stop the Axis. Often Allies are forced to push moves where they dangle a possible 60-70% Axis win, but have to do it to keep the pressure on. If the Axis bite and win big, bad news. Of course 30-40% chance Axis lose big too…

I have played thousands and thousands of games of chess, so I totally understand ELO and what you guys are arguing, just so you know. How many hours of thought was put into that 55 move chess game? I’m no grandmaster, but I’ve never had a chess game come anywhere near the level of effort of an A&A game
Gamerman, your system is SOOO annoying because I am not No. 1!!!
