      @Gargantua

      CANADA vs USA final tally

      Results:

Friday game, 1941 Anniversary w/bid for 2 points:

      San Francisco over Victoria

      Vancouver over Seattle

      Tacoma over Valley (Canada)

      Saturday game, G40 w/bid for 4 points:

      San Francisco over Vancouver

      Seattle over Valley

      Tacoma over Victoria

Sunday Game, 1942 2nd, except San Francisco vs Valley which was 1942 Anniversary, w/bid, for 2 points:

      San Francisco over Valley

      Vancouver over Tacoma

      Seattle over Victoria

      Tournament totals:

San Francisco comes in at No.1 at 8 points! Yay!

Tacoma and Seattle come in for tie for 2nd place at 6 points each.

Vancouver comes in 3rd for 4 points.

Victory and Valley come in last at 0 each.

Wow, this was a marathon tournament. Everyone was up at least until 2-3am, with people just crashing in rooms and couches, rising up the next morning at 7am to eggs and bacon and then dice, with games going by 9am. I got less than 4 hours of sleep both nights, that plus the beer and chest bumping really took it out of me.

But nonetheless, everyone I think had a good time. If there was one area of improvement, I think the moderator declared victories were unsatisfying for some. This was understandable since you’re asking someone to declare a winner based on an arbitrary stopping point in the game. Many of the games the moderators had to call were close enough that while you could still see one side was winning, there was a chance the other side could rally. I don’t like tourney rules, but maybe now I see value. Live and learn.

Regardless, there was definitely a lot of KILL KILL KILLING! Maybe next year I will be out from under my “family contribution time” deficit that I can host this thing again! As is, no one punched a hole in the wall, or threw a chair through any windows so I am probably good getting the house again!!

      Peace!.. er, wait, WAR!

Guys, I’m thinking about resigning as league moderator and scoreboard operator. I don’t want to leave you in the middle of a year so intend to finish this year out and set up playoffs and everything, but maybe somebody should come alongside me and learn some of the ropes, or maybe you guys have an idea of another direction to take all this.

Contributing to this decision is that I did have my first manic and depressive episodes this year since 2005 (still pretty depressed - trying to get the right meds) but I wanted to get out anyway, since I haven’t found the time to play any league games myself.

I intend to help make a smooth transition if someone else is eager to moderate and score games (maybe a team) - I’d been doing everything with no partner for years now (Although having a partner can mean more work if they have differing ideas than you)

Please think about it - sorry - I guess this day had to come sooner or later. Thanks for understanding

      The giants pass on…

I still remember the first G40 game I beat Gamerman, only then to lose 2 subsequent games to him… Highlight of my A&A game career! LOL! Gamerman and Boldfresh will always be A&A Titans in my book…

After the holidays, I will see where I am at time-wise and perhaps jump back in.

The last couple years I have been doing BBR, which people play via YouTube (don’t get me started) and in person.

BBR is wild, more like poker than chess. But you all would be proud, me and Gargantua when to a bunch tourneys in Atlanta and St. Louis and stomped nerds into dust.

Anyway, thinking of getting back to something more cerebral/serious.

For anyone who is interested, league games played per year are:
      2013 - 581
      2014 - 520
      2015 - 462
      2016 - 648
      2017 - 404
      2018 - 451
      2019 - 367
      2020 - 365
      2021 - 339
      2022 - 218+

Seems like when Balanced Mod came out in 2016 there was a big rush. I can’t really explain why the games played dropped off so much this year. Some big players have left the league, had enough of A&A?

I personally got a bit grumpy about the Paris liberation disincentive, and worse (IMO) the incentive to leave Normandy French. Although I am not sure if others got so irritated by this other than Gargantua.

Game length definitely a factor. 20 rounds for BM3 is pretty standard. Also level play has gone up. Casual fast and loose won’t cut it anymore.

Some random photos above. The one of us toasting was after the final game, which was a split decision for Vancouver. I voted for Tacoma but Juan and Joel were for Vancouver. Joel did not participate in the battle. That was a tight game.

Wow, sad to hear about the troubles. Sounds like Bold is on his way back. That is good news indeed. I went to college in Chicago and spend many years there. I used to have a lot of connections there, but time has faded many of them. But a trip back once things finally return to normal could be in order.

When Bold is ready to pick up the sword, let him know I am ready! LOL.

    • RE: My Greatest Axis & Allies Moment. What's Yours?

      @corporalclegg

Easy, I was playing JuanSpain in G40 BM. It was competitive, but my Axis were slowly losing. Japan was collapsing, but Italy had Cairo. Long story short, I managed to attack and then, after 1 round, retreat my german eastern front stack through the Russian stack in Belorussia so as to move from East Poland to Bryansk. Russia had no choice but to do the same and attack and then retreat its own stack through mine back to Moscow. The gambit paid off, Russia was bled white, my Germans took Moscow for the win.

      GREATEST EVER!

    • RE: "LOSERS PRIVILEGE"

      @seancb

“Loser’s Privilege” is an ancient and powerful doctrine, seldom seen or used, but can come up in rare occasions. Legend tells its origins were in Shogun games and the massive battles between Daimyos and Ronin armies amongst castles, the dice flopping hard for one side and the loser flipping the board as the ultimate gesture of defeat. A strange form of board game Seppuku.

The strict legal conditions to justify usage of “Loser’s Privilege” are as follows:

      1. Loser’s Privilege can only arise after a battle decided by dice in a game involving three or more players, and only the attacker may invoke the right.

      2. The battle in question must be between overwhelmingly in favor to close to 50/50 for the attacker. Attacks at less than 50% are insufficient prerequisites. Before the battle, any player can demand as a matter of right that the odds of victory be verified by an objective measurement. Best practices recommend usage of battle calculator or a “low-luck” analysis.

      3. The battle in question must be decisive for the entire game and declared as such by the attacker. This must be acknowledged by everyone at the table either explicitly or implicitly. Best practices recommend the attacker declare the battle to be “for the game,” “decisive” or other such effective language. This declaration must be received and acknowledged by the other players. Again best practices recommend usage of a recording of some sort to verify.

      4. If any players object to the declaration that the battle in question is decisive, the objection will be sustained and the declaration voided if all other players to the game, excluding the attacker, agree with the objection. Otherwise, the objection is overruled. However, any player who did register an objection that was overruled can “Appeal” the declaration. See below.

      5. If conditions 1 through 4 above are met, the attacker may then conduct the attack with the option of invoking Loser’s Privilege. To invoke Loser’s Privilege the attacker must lose the battle. Any type of loss is sufficient. However, a victory at a cost greater than expected by the attacker is insufficient to allow the privilege, this includes ties.

      6. After the battle in question has concluded and the battle was lost by the attacker, but before the invocation of Loser’s Privilege, any player who made an objection that was overruled per step 4 above may Appeal the determination of the objection. The appeal is resolved by a vote of the players over whether the battle in question should be redone using low-luck. If a majority agrees to do so, then the battle shall be redone accordingly. In games with an even number of players, any tie vote will be decided by die roll: result 1-3, then no low-luck reroll; result 4-6, then low-luck reroll. There is no Loser’s Privilege right for any attack done according to low-luck.

      7. If the attacker loses the battle, all conditions above are met and there was no successful appeal, he then may proceed to invoke Loser’s Privilege by physically destroying the setup of the game as it stands immediately after the battle in question to such an extent so the game can no longer be playable. Best practices recommend the player invoking Loser’s Privileged use his best judgment in destroying the setup necessary to make the game unplayable but not so as to create an inordinate mess that would result in an excessively long cleanup time.

Historical Exception: a player who successfully invokes Loser’s Privilege in a Shogun, Ikusa or any original Milton Bradley Game Masters series game may by right physically flip the board.

      1. If a player invokes Loser’s Privilege but fails to meet any condition above or fails to acknowledge a successful appeal, then that player must clean up the entire game.
