    • RE: Germany Loses the Battle of France. What's next?

      @xFearing:

      I had a standard battle against France: 5 infantry, 4 mech, 1 artillery, and 6 tanks (I also took Normandy with 2 infantry and 2 artillery).  I then had some of the worst rolls I’ve ever had in the game, only getting 6 hits in 3 rounds of combat and France knocked off everything I had but 2 tanks, so I retreated.  Later on I had Italy take France just so France couldn’t stack 6 infantry on the next turn.  What can Germany do with such a meager amount of income on the first turn?

      Note: I used the calculator and it turns out I had a 99.3% chance of winning that battle, and the defender had a 0.6% chance of winning.  France still had two artillery, an infantry, two tanks, and a fighter left.

      When I put this into the A&A Odds Calculator it returns a 93-94% chance for Germany to win this. And http://dskelly.com/misc/aa/index.php?page=aasim&noborder=1 estimates it at slightly below 93%. So, like others said, that’s just taking too much risk. Add those troops you sent to Normandy to the battle and your chance of losing it will be minimal.
      And besides the chances of winning the battle in the first place, there’s another sound reason for throwing all available land forces at France round 1: by bringing overwhelming odds, you’ll minimize your losses. Even if you had won in France, the losses incurred would likely have been bigger than the benefit of gaining Normandy (if there is such a benefit in the first place - there’s a viable strategy based on leaving Normandy to the French).
      I’m also surprised that, given the large number of French survivors, Italy was able to take France at all. Didn’t the UK send a few fighters to reinforce France?

      Finally, after such a disastrous G1, I would probably congratulate my opponent and propose to start a new game, except maybe if everything else went very well for compensation and consolation.

    • RE: Questions – mostly about factories

      @Darby:

      I will push my luck with some other questions:

      Situation: France has fallen to Germany

      1. USA lands on French Morocco
        a) There are French Troops there - do the USA place a Roundel and begin collecting income ?
        b) There are No troops there - do the USA place a Roundel and begin collecting income ?

      Regardless of whether there are French troops there, as long as you’re talking “French” Morocco, it will stay French until the Axis conquer it. The only way the US can ever own it, is to capture it from an Axis power that had first captured it.

      @Darby:

      Evolving Situation:  Later France is liberated so the USA roundel is removed and control / income becomes French again, however there are both British and US troops ( no French troops) in say Southern France at the time of French Liberation.

      Next Turn Germany reconquers France

      Who gets the control of Southern France which contains both British, and US troops and a French Roundel?

      Regardless of which Allied troops are in Southern France when France is liberated, and regardless which Allied power holds it at the time, control immediately reverts to France. So any cardboard roundels are removed, leaving only the French roundel that’s printed on the board. So France still has Southern France, even though it has little use for it.

      This very situation is often a reason for the US and/or UK not to liberate France - or at least, not to hurry doing so. First, if they lose it again to Germany, the Germans will collect the French income. Second, before they liberated France, the other Allies (especially the US) could use the factories in Normandy-Bordeaux and in Southern France to produce much-needed units on the spot, and they lose that option (plus the IPC income) once those areas revert to France. So think twice before you rush in to have that triumphal march down Champs Elysees!

      1. No. Once liberated, Manchuria immediately becomes Chinese, and the Chinese can not build factories.

      2. No. The factory is destroyed as soon as Manchuria is liberated by any Ally.

      3. Yes. This happens automatically when Manchuria is liberated.

      4. Yes. This ability is unique to the Chinese.

      5. No. Once liberated, Manchuria immediately becomes Chinese, and the Chinese can not build air bases or naval bases.

      6. Yes. Contrary to factories, air bases and naval bases are not destroyed when Manchuria is liberated.

      7. Correct. Only the original owner could upgrade it back to 10 once they own the territory again.

      8 ) The maximum number of units to be produced there would be 3, since it’s now a minor complex. The French could later upgrade it to a major complex 10 (producing up to 10 units) again after having saved enough money to do so.

      1. No. Only the original owner of the territory (in your example, Germany) can ever own a major complex  there.

    • RE: On this day during W.W. 2

      June 10 is a day that will live on in infamy. It was marked by several well-known German atrocities against the civilian population of occupied countries.

      On this day in 1942, the Germans started the destruction of the village of Lidice in Czechoslovakia and the massacre of its population. On the same day in 1944, the villages of Oradour-sur-Glane in France and Distomo in Greece were destroyed in a similar way.

      Another Carlsen vs Caruana test in Norway. Carlsen won their individual game, but Caruana won the tournament.

      At first I thought that Carlsen would be the clear favorite in their upcoming match, but by now I’m not so sure. It will be interesting!

    • RE: Why do you buy a sub G1?

      I may be mistaken here, but I don’t see a very good way for the UK to protect the damaged battleship without significantly compromising other objectives they may have. It’s all circumstantial of course, and it depends on the outcome of the strafe run on SZ111 - as that battle progresses, Germany has the flexibility to either strafe or not. But the target situation after G1 is:

      • SZ110 is empty;
      • SZ106 has 1 or 2 German subs;
      • SZ112 has the damaged German battleship, cruiser and sub;
      • SZ113 has the damaged Britsh battleship;
      • SZ109 has the British destroyer and transport;
      • SZ99 has the British cruiser

      For maximum protection, the British may decide to move the battleship, cruiser and destroyer to SZ119 and put three fighters in Scotland. But that compromises their Taranto attack, and they can’t send the cruiser to SZ96. And Germany may still go for it if they want to, sending their battleship, cruiser, sub, 2 bombers, a fighter and a tactical bomber - the latter two would then require Germany to build a carrier G2.

      Alternatively, the British may move everything to SZ109 for maximum scramble protection, but that implies they’re really not doing anything else with those fighters, so no Taranto there. Plus, Germany may now send its entire air force because the planes can land anyway.

      Agreed, German air wouldn’t be doing much else on G2 in such a scenario. Whether that’s a problem, depends on Germany’s plans in the east. I like an I2 attack on Russia anyway, so without a British Taranto raid there’s not all that much to do for the Luftwaffe G2.

    • RE: Why do you buy a sub G1?

      My specific reason for buying that sub is, to kill the SZ111 UK battleship G2, while keeping the German battleship alive. On G1, I like to to take out SZ110, but only strafe SZ111, and then retreat the German battleship. Ideally, this would leave the UK with only a damaged battleship in SZ111, and that battleship can’t escape from the range of the German sub and bombers. But I’d rather not loose a bomber when attacking the battleship G2, so that’s where the sub comes in.
      If the strafe doesn’t quite go as well - say that the UK cruiser has also survived - then as Germany, I still have a fair chance of killing  both ships with 2 bombers plus the sub if the ships stay together. Or, if they split, I’ll probably just go after the battleship and leave the cruiser alone.

    • RE: Strange plays in your games

      In a Europe 1940 game (but I suppose it could have happened in Global), the British and Italians had virtually eliminated each other in Africa. Also, Britain had fallen to a successful Sea Lion, but they had a strong air force left in Transjordan, which was the result of the Allies deciding to evacuate rather than defend Britain when Sea Lion was inevitable (probably not the best decision btw).

      Italy held several African territories, but had only a single inf left and was reluctant to send more because the transports and any fleet with it would be sunk by the British planes.

      In the mean time, nobody had bothered the three French inf in Northern Africa, and the French plane had also escaped in that direction. So in the absence of British land units, and with the Americans not wanting to divert forces there, the Allies decided that it would be a good idea to take that bit of income from Italy anyway…. and we saw the French army gloriously marching on Italian-held Lybia, Tobruk, Alexandria… if we hadn’t stopped the game due to time constraints, French Egypt would have been next, with the sub-Saharan and Syrian inf also having arrived.

      So we ended up running out of French counters!

      OMG i didnt know we had Chess players! Great we should have regular Chess news

      I’m not too surprised that A&A and chess might attract the same people. There’s a definite nerd factor to both games. I also wasn’t too surprised to find that that quite a few of my colleagues (I work in IT) have played chess, and that some like board games in general.
      I haven’t played competitive chess for 25 years now, but back then, I was a strong player.

      Who do I register with?  Where can some games online to start building my rating?

      Would be interested to know!

      Karl

      Here is another very good and free site:

      https://lichess.org/
      https://lichess.org/about

      Apart from playing human vs. human or human vs. computer (‘Stockfish’ engine) you can even get an analysis of your games, there.

      Agreed, lichess.org is very good. You can even copy-paste any game that you played elsewhere as long as you have it in PGN format and lichess will analyze it for you.

      You can try https://blitz.chessbase.com/ or http://freechess.org/

      I never actually registered there but sometimes play as a guest. I’ve recently preferred Chessbase over Freechess because Chessbase will also give you a rating as a guest, though it frequently forgets it. It’s not necessarily just blitz, you can set your own time limit, though blitz typically attracts more opponents.
      My main reason for not registering is that I could spend too much time there. It’s quite addictive.

    • RE: Factories and Facilties—Where, How, When, and Why?

      I was never a big fan of a Romanian IC, but Afrikakorps recently outlined a German plan aimed at taking Egypt early. Building a Romanian IC G1 is a key factor in his latest implementation of that plan. See https://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?topic=39016.135 for an extended discussion. It may be a better idea than I first thought it would be.
