    • RE: G40 Benelux (Belgium/Netherlands/Luxembourg) Setup

      @Herr:

      I like the general idea though of course it would have to be carefully balanced. As for the units, I’m not much in favor of the tank in Scotland, for realism’s sake. The Dutch had one small tank at home. The Belgians did have a significant number of tanks but evacuating them to the UK was evidently impossible. Having two Benelux infantry units there is already more than enough compared to the French who were far more numerous.
      Dutch New Guinea might have an infantry unit, though. Dutch resistance continued throughout the war there, and the Japanese never completely conquered that territory.

      I can’t find it now, but in my research, I came across a Dutch tank unit raised in England after the fall of the Netherlands. For balance’s sake, maybe it should be 1 Artillery to represent Luxembourg’s limited contribution to the allied war effort. And maybe it should be only one infantry in England for both balance, and scale.

      I couldn’t find any Dutch 1940 Order of Battle for Dutch New Guinea. I only found references to DNG being reinforced after Japan declared war. This is the best historical argument for a Dutch transport in the Pacific, though I still feel it should be up to ANZAC to ferry Dutch units around for balance’s sake, which is empirically more important than historical accuracy.

      Another reason I don’t stress accuracy, is that it’s a slippery slope that eventually leads to completely revamping the game; not just the setup, but the map, and game mechanics as well. I would certainly like to do this for my own amusement, but it’s hard enough to get a game of Global going. I don’t want to compound that problem by creating an even more complicated game with 40-something countries, resources, trade agreements, diplomatic agreements, governments in exile, technology, a dozen new units, prison camps, espionage, sabotage, food rationing on the home front, and the Bretton Woods Conference.

      Though I would totally play that game.

    • RE: Global 1940 2nd Edition Map Analysis

      Excellent list! There were also some parallel conflicts at the time that had small effects on the war, but I feel are in the spirit of this thread.

      While the Republic of Ireland was neutral during the war, the IRA collaborated with Germany, and conducted bombing campaigns in 1939, and 1942. I personally HR that Erie is a pro-Axis Neutral with 1 Infantry.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plan_Kathleen

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Green_(Ireland)

      Regarding Persia, and Iraq, both countries experienced Kurdish revolts during the war.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1943_Barzani_revolt

      And finally, Ecuador and Peru fought a small border war in 1941-42 that was not a part of WWII, but saw the use of contemporary tactics. I’m currently working on a map for this war that can be used to teach new players the mechanics of A&A.

      @Chris_Henry:

      Another one was that Burma had a puppet government set up by Japan and had an army, the Burma National Army, that actually assisted the Japanese limitedly for a time, until they realized that Japan had no real intentions of honoring Burma as an independent nation.

      Japan set up a few puppet states in Asia (known as the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere) including Manchukuo and Burma, as well as the Philippines, Malaya, Inner Mongolia, and “Free India”, which never held any Indian soil.

    • RE: Independent Kingdom of Egypt?

      @Caesar:

      From my understanding of Egypt, it was politically neutral but clearly a slave state of UK that never declared war and it’s leaders had no problem listening to British forces so making it its own state would be unique but not realistic.

      You are correct, though Iraq had a similar status at the time. Both were “independent” Kingdoms that were really ruled by Britain. Whereas Iraq actually fought the British in 1941, Egypt never got the chance to. A plot for Egypt to join the Axis, and overthrow the British was revealed, which lead to the British Army deposing the King of Egypt.

      For this reason, I feel like Egypt has potential to play a unique role in the game. Maybe not as an independent power. Obviously not as a pro-Axis Neutral like Iraq, but something.

      @CWO:

      @JustLuthor:

      Should it take its own turn, or become a part of the Commonwealth along with ANZAC, Canada, and South Africa?
      Its relationship with the UK was complicated at the time.

      For general background information on what political (and to some extent military) status each Global 1940 map territory had during WWII, have a look at the map analysis document which I compiled and posted over here:

    • RE: G40 Benelux (Belgium/Netherlands/Luxembourg) Setup

      I agree that it’s a major boost to the allies. You could also add additional Japanese units to Siam to represent Thai forces. I recommend 1 Tank, 1 Fighter in Siam, and 1 Submarine, 1 Cruiser in Seazone 36. This represents Thailand’s forces around this time better than the OOB setup.

      I also have a house rule about adding 1 French infantry to French Indo China.  :-D

    • 1936 or 1939

      I’m sure this question has been answered somewhere on the forum, but I haven’t come across the answer just yet, so I’m sorry if it’s already out there.

      If a person was going to buy one version of Global War, would you recommend 1936, or 1939?

    • Independent Kingdom of Egypt?

      Has anyone ever come up with a house rule for Egypt as its own power?

      Not that the game needs another power, but does anyone have any ideas for possibly including Egypt in Global? I mean, HBG does make an Egyptian roundel! Should it take its own turn, or become a part of the Commonwealth along with ANZAC, Canada, and South Africa?

      Its relationship with the UK was complicated at the time. At the beginning of World War Two, Egypt was essentially a British puppet state, but had its own army, navy, and air force. While technically neutral until later in the war, The Brits based ships, planes, and men in Egypt. Eventually, the British army pressured the King of Egypt to abdicate, in favor of a political party that would support the Allies more.

      All I’ve been able to work out is that Egypt would have three territories (Alexandria, Egypt, and Anglo-Egyptian Sudan), and its capital would be Cairo. It would be allied with the UK, and I suppose it would have a factory in Egypt. Though it would need appropriate NOs in order to really pump units out of there.

      Probably not worth it for every game, but a fun thought experiment.

    • RE: G40 Benelux (Belgium/Netherlands/Luxembourg) Setup

      Well, I house rule for historical accuracy balanced with eloquence of play, so no.

      But you do you.

      I would eventually like to overhaul the game with a new map, setup, and political situation that is more historically accurate.

      I thought about it, but I’m already dumping a bunch of free units to help the allies hold Indonesia, do I really want to give them logistical auxiliaries?

    • RE: Adding Minor Powers and New Units

      I came to this thread because while I believe I have a decent house for adding axis minors to Asia (Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere or GEACS), I’m struggling to lock down how I want to do Axis Minors in Europe (Tripartite Pact).

      Part of the problem is historical. Finland was never a member of the Tripartite Pact, but seems to small to give its own turn to. The obvious answer is to forego historical accuracy for eloquence of play.

      The other problem is, what to do with Iraq? Is it a member of the Tripartite Pact? Part of GEACS? Does it remain as is? Or do you pair it with Persia (Persia should really be a pro axis neutral), and make the two Nations their own thing that just gets railroaded, like France?

      The short version of how I introduce Asia minors is that Manchuria and Siam are the power known as GEACS. They do not start with a factory, but do get some additional units. Their NOs involve the other members of the historical GEACS (Philippines, Malaya, Burma, India), and Thai control of Shan States and French Indochina. I’ll make a post explaining the full rules in the House Rules forum.

    • G40 Benelux (Belgium/Netherlands/Luxembourg) Setup

      Here’s my suggested setup for Dutch, Belgian, and Luxembourgish (Benelux) units. I decided to make the three countries into one power, since their capitals are in the same territory (Holland Belgium). This setup is based on the historic order of battle for Benelux troops after the German invasion, as well an attempt to not unbalance the game too much.

      Benelux begins the game in control of all Dutch territories, as well as Belgian Congo (subtract 1 IPC from UK Europe). They move after France’s turn. Benelux acts as a conquered nation (like France after G1), and thus it does not collect income. Allied nations can liberate Benelux territories, and collect their income. Should the Allies liberate Holland Belgium, Benelux may collect income as a normal nation. Benelux has no National Objectives.

      Historical Board Gaming has orange pieces that can be used, as well as roundels. The only pieces they’re missing are submarines, and AAA guns. Both of which can be purchased in white, and then painted orange.

      UPDATE!
      After testing it out, I’ve made some minor adjustments, including additional Axis units to offset the disparity of allied units.

      DUTCH SETUP (Updated 5/29/2019
      United Kingdom: 1 Infantry
      Scotland: 1 Artillery
      Suriname: 1 Fighter

    • RE: HBG's Spanish Civil War

      Here’s my proposed setup for Nationalist, Republican, and Basque Navies based on historical navies at the beginning of the war (with some alterations for balance). Unfortunately, the map doesn’t really allow for interesting naval situations. I’m considering adding a backdrop for the map that expands the ocean with more seazones.

      Nationalist Navy
      Cape Ortegal: 1 Destroyer, 1 Cruiser, 1 Battleship
      Cape Finesterre: 2 Cruisers

      Republican Navy
      Bay of Biscay: 1 Battleship
      Alboran Sea: 1 Destroyer
      Cape of Palos: 3 Submarines, 4 Destroyers
      Gulf of Cadiz: 1 Cruiser
      Bay of Setubal: 1 Destroyers, 1 Cruisers

      Republican Allies Navy
      Bay of Biscay: 2 Destroyers

      EDIT
      Even though they didn’t send ships until 1937, you could add Italian (Nationalist Allies) ships to the Mediterranean.

      Nationalist Allies Navy
      Gulf of Leon: 2 Submarines, 4 Destroyers, 1 Cruiser

    • Jacksonville/St Augustine

      I’m will be moving to the Jacksonville area soon. Are there any players in the area?

      I have copies of Revised, Global 2nd Edition, HBG’s Spanish Civil War, and I’ve designed the Italo-Ethiopian War/East African Campaign game that I would love help play testing.

    • HBG's Spanish Civil War

      I just purchased, but haven’t yet played, the Spanish Civil War variant from Historical Board Games. I can’t help but notice that there’s almost no information about the game on the internet; not even reviews on HBG’s website. Am I just missing any past threads on this forum? Has anyone played this game, and what are your thoughts?

      My initial reaction to the rules and setup are that the costs of units are neat, and reflect the country’s industrial handicaps at the time. I also like the addition of armored cars, and am thinking of including the unit into my G40 game. The setup and “countries” are historically inaccurate. I might come up with my own setup, where Catalonia, the Basque Country, and Galicia are also Republican Allies, the Nationalists control the Balearic Islands, and each side has navies. But I’d like to play the OOB setup first to see how the game plays as is.
