    • RE: Can the US have naval superiority?

      When playing a 5 player game the major weakness of the allies, lack of co-ordination, becomes a major concern.  The axis players can pretty much pursue their own short-term goals.  The allies on the other hand aren’t strong enough to mount an effective campaign without the support of the other allied players.  I suggest FDR, Churchill, & Stalin meet in Tehran to map out their strategy.  :-P

      But to answer your question there are a number of strategies for a pacific campaign.  When I go for a pacific strategy I try to do 2 things, 1. Split the Japanese fleet & 2. Get them to attack me.  You will need some help from the UK.

      Combine the UK Indian & Aussie fleets in SZ30 (1fgt, 1ac, 1dd, 1sub, 2trn) japan can attack with 2fgt 1ac 1bb.  Japan will most likely win the battle but will lose part of their fleet.

      If Japan attacks Pearl Harbor with capital ships (ac bb) counter-attack with your bb, trn, fgt (from W. US), fgt from Hawaii & bomber from E. US.  You will most likely lose all of these but if you can deal a serious blow to half the Japanese fleet.

      On US1 build at least an AC & transport plus other Naval/Air units, move the dd from sz20 to the US west coast.

      After the 3 battles in Round 1 Japan’s fleet should be much dimished & you have a new US fleet to start threatening japan’s IPC lifeline in the South pacific.

      If your playing online using DAAK, you can throw “opportunity costs” out the window.  DAAK eats SBR bombers for breakfast, lunch & dinner…with an occasional midnight snack thrown in.  :-D

    • RE: 2nd turn attack on U.K. - How do you counter this?

      This is the kind of purchase that declares your intentions for everyone to see.  Knowing that Germany is planning an Invasion on G2 this is what I would do:

      UK1
      UK has 2 options, fortify the homeland or build naval units. I prefer Naval units.  Move the bb & trn from sz2 to sz6 (land troops in norway if you want) Build 1 ac & 1 dd in sz6 land your 2 fighters on the carrier.  Germany now has to fight through your navy if they want to land in the UK.

      US1:
      Load 2 inf 1 art 1 tnk on your transports in sz10, move the entire sz10 fleet to sz8 unload the US ground forces.  Fly your bomber & fighter from E. US to UK.  Now Germany not only has to fight its way through the UK fleet, but there is a sizeable US/UK force that needs to be defeated.

      Russia2:
      Move your sub from sz2 (that’s where most people put it on Russia1) to sz6.  Germany has bought no ground forces on their first turn, hit them hard, they have no reserves to counter-attack with. By G2, with the UK Fleet, US reinforcements, & encroaching russians, I doubt the Germans will want to go ahead with “Operation Sea Lion”.

    • RE: How would you deal with this Russian Navy?

      Sounds like the russians spent a lot of money for a fleet whose sole accomplishment was to take out the German Med fleet.  Russia is cash poor to begin with, diverting all that money to Naval purchases was really a waste.  The $40 they spent on a navy would have been better spent on ground & air units.  If taking out the german fleet was a major Russian objective they should have bought air units, at least those would have been helpful in the land battle.

    • RE: LHTR: Larry Harris Tournament Rules

      SBR is another that always comes to mind.  Under the original rules you could bring 20 bombers & bomb germany back to the stone age.  Under the new rules total losses per turn can’t exceed the territories value.  Most of the other changes are clarifications.

    • AA ownership question

      Say russia moves an AA to persia, persia is taken by japan, then persia is liberated by the UK.

      Who owns the AA gun.  What if the gun had been moved to Kazakh & the UK captured it there?
      Is ownership specific to the territory or the capturing army?

      @DarthMaximus:

      So the US DD attacks, but the sub scores a hit, you cannot take the hit on the UK BB, right?

      That’s the impression I get from the latest LHTR (1.3?)

      That is correct.  The UK battleship is on a pleasure cruise, it just sits on the sidelines & watches (tea anyone?  :-) ).

      I would have ignored the russian fleet, at least on G1.  At first the sight of a russian navy waiting to break out of the black sea is unnerving, but the fleet you described really doesn’t carry much of an offensive punch & without a transport it’s no threat to your land troops.  You never did say what happened to that fleet, did the russians ever use it for anything?

      My axioms are:

      1st Axiom  Don’t do something stupid.

      2nd Axiom If you did something stupid, don’t do it again.

      3rd Axiom If you’re still doing the same stupid thing…STOP!!!

      4th Axiom If you can’t stop doing the same stupid thing, lock your game up in the closet.

    • RE: Newbie question

      One thing to keep in mind about IC.  You normally will want to build an IC for 1 of 2 reasons.

      1.  Your income exceeds your build capacity.  This is very common for Japan, they have only 1 IC with a build limit of 8.

      2.  Your current IC’s are far from battlefield.  Also very common for Japan as they move farther west in Asia.  This also applies to the US & UK to a lesser degree.  Many US/UK players will place an IC in Sinkiang (US) and/or India (UK) in an effort to slow down Japan’s western advance.

    • RE: Aircraft movement question…

      We play LHTR (whatever the latest version is…currently 1.3).

      Having thought about it some more, it seems an unworkabel rule.  To many variables come into play between the end of the fighters turn & the allied turn where the carrier is suppose to collect the fighters.

    • RE: Newbie question

      @frimmel:

      If you are new to the game  a very important lesson to learn is patience. Unless you wish to depend on luck the game can not be won in a single turn. What can happen on a given turn is important but so are its consequences down the line. You have to look to the long term.

      Expanding on this, what ever side/country you’re playing set a strategic goal.  Taylor your purchases and attacks to achieving that goal.  Exploit targets of opportunity if they present themselves, but don’t get bogged down in protracted battles that don’t move you towards your ultimate goal.  This is a lot harder than it sounds & I still struggle with this even after a year of play.

    • RE: Aircraft movement question…

      @ncscswitch:

      And believe it or not, you can do this even if your own carrier can;t reach but an allied carrier can before the end of the turn (completion of US’s move).

      So, UK can fly out 4 spaces to attack at sea, with no UK carrier even in existence… so long as the US comits to sending THEIR carrier that is 2 spaces away in to retrieve those planes in the US’s move.

      really, I’ve never seen that one before.  Doesn’t it violate the rule that planes have to land somewhere at the end of non-combat movement with the exception of a carrier to be built in the seazone the planes are hovering in?  Can you site the rule, I want to use this against my friend (it will totaly blow him away) but he’s gonna want proof.

    • RE: Focused SBR on Russia with the Axis

      If you’re playing by LHTR (Larry Harris Tournament Rules) SBR as a strategy becomes even less attractive.

      Total losses by all bombers can not exceed the territory’s IPC value, under the old rules the limit was per bomber/dice.

      Heavy bombers still roll 2 dice but you take the highest of the 2 and add 1 (reducing their damage from 2-12 IPC to 2-7 IPC).

      Plus bombers are expensive 1 bmb=5 Inf=3 Tanks.  BTW is it just me or does everyone think bombers are overpriced?

    • RE: Newbie question

      you can increase your odds of keeping Norway if you sink the Canadian transport in SZ1 with your sub from SZ8.  That leaves the UK with only 1 transport to land troops in Norway on UK1.

    • RE: Newbie question

      The UK most definetly will invade even if it’s just with 1 infantry, W. Europre is worth $6.  The Uk is unlikely to build an IC on round 2 unless they are reasonably sure they can hold it through round 3 (that is the soonest they could start placing units there).  If they land, counter-attack & push them back into the sea especially in the early rounds.
