Can us subs leave the east coast? Other than that worthless sz in the middle of the atlantic?

RE: Battleships are too Expensive
I agree, the psychological effect of adding ablative wounds to your fleet can mean you don’t even get attacked. Now that carriers come with 1 ablative wound it becomes easier to have a fleet where technically the first 4+ hits can be nullified.
I actually never see CA’s get produced. For 8 bucks more you get a solid bb, usually they are only built by UK to buff their fleet.
That being said, dd’s still have their role as cheap fodder and ASW duties.

RE: India Liberates South Africa
Sadly no, so if London falls, its best to move all UK assets to the Pacific map, or at least ground units. At least that is my interpretation, UKIndia only can collect income from the Pacific board, not the Atlantic.

RE: Russia Turn 2
/The/ best spot is EPol, provided you can defend it and not lose it to barbarossa. I always try and mass there if I can.
To clarify, its the best because it borders every border square and is best for launching an attack into Europe…or Russia.

RE: Neccesary Axis strategy
we’re talking about sz109, the one that is furthest from Germany and can get 4 ftrs scrambled. It is defended by 1 dd 1 trn.
Well, with no specifics then it is hard to critique your strategy…i guess you got the objectives right:S

RE: Neccesary Axis strategy
The fourth plane comes from Scotland, so thats 2 ftrs in London, 1 french ftr in london, and 1 ftr in scotland coming from 2 airbases.
The problem I have with taking SFrance so light is that you then allow the UK player to recapture or at least kill German tanks with the units from Normandy. I am going to assume you take SFrance with 2 tanks, you’ll most likely take France with 1 mech/art 3 tanks. As UK or france I would try and counter you from Normandy.
Still, the interesting notion of this strategy is to use all aircraft against the UK fleet. I think I would still pull 1 ftr 1 tac to paris in order to land them in Sitaly, letting me take SFrance a bit stronger. I will have to take a closer look at this when my board is setup for G1 again.
Now if we could just get you to flesh out your Japan and Italian strats too…:)

RE: Neccesary Axis strategy
I find sz 109 to be the hardest because 4 allied ftrs can scramble to defend. Your opponent needs to be considering which of these engagements he can win and scramble there.
Because of this I have been forced to consolidate my attacks as Germany. Hitting the English channel bb and hit the subs off Canada. Perhaps I need to be going after that ca off Gibraltar though instead. It can operate in the Med immediately.
Also, considering you are sending 4 Mech 1 arm(or 2) to SFrance, that leaves you with 6 inf, 3 art, 4 tanks against 7 inf 2 art 2 arm 1 ftr in Paris.
Thats 13 attacking units vs 12 def, and you only win that battle 59%…a battle for FRANCE! Now, you could add another inf(I saved one to block the UK blitz on Belgium, if we add him it bumps the attacker up to 73%. That means 1 out of 4 games you lose on G1.
Now you see why I asked for the ‘how’ on your strategy, you’re trying to do everything, creating a lot of low odds battles. Every low odds battle you add to the mix increases your risk that the turn goes bad.

RE: Convoy questions!
I can answer easy questions!
First let me say, you should but a 2 liter of Jolt cola and spend a day or 2 reading the sticky threat A&AGlobal FAQ or something like that. Its right up above this post and hold many kernels of valuable rules. A quick study of that should equip you with the ability to wade through any rule.
- You can only convoy disrupt when at war, it is not a DOW. You would have to DOW before hand. There is nothing keeping Russia from leaving that sub there when not at war, it just would not convoy raid.
2)it depends, if the convoy zone is empty, than it is a noncombat move. If it is a hostile zone, then you would have to move in in combat to clear the convoy. This means you can sometimes attack a convoy zone with 1 dd and many planes against many subs. If you clear the zone and they kill your dd, then just move another combat ship into the zone in noncom.
3)Yes. In fact I believe you can move into the zone in noncom even if there is a dd. The enemy can attack you on their turn of course.

RE: Japan + Larry Harris = HUH!?
‘The war’ you are referring to is the 2nd Sino-Japanese war.
From our(american perspective) there were 2 world wars in the early 20th century. But from other countries perspective, there were many wars.
Trying to roll them all up into 1 great big world war sounds good for the victorious history books, but doesn’t really tell the truth.

RE: Changes still needed to the game, IMHO
I also agree with Peck, which is why I think Japan should be given 1 more trn. They cannot, as it sits now, take the DEI completely on J2. I think they should be able to. After the first round of war(j2) you’re still only going to be making about 40ipcs, you won’t be making 50 until J3 or more likely J4.
I think Japan needs that income boost to keep up with the Americans who will be making much more….albeit a few turns away.

RE: Changes still needed to the game, IMHO
I /guess/ I agree that Japan specifically needs an adjustment. Italy does as well, but their fix is simple, Italy isn’t at war until their turn.
For Japan, I think all that is needed is 1 trn. They have enough troops on the mainland to shove China back, that is enough I think. They have enough aircraft and combat ships, but what they need is 1 more trn so they can take all the DEI J2. Those islands are a 20ipc swing, best to give it to Japan as soon as possible to counter the 25-30 US is getting.

RE: What to do with Russian fleet units
well then, it seems the best option for those Russian ships is to try and get red oktober outta the Baltic, use the BB to block inside the baltic, and use your subs (and a lvl bmb outta Lenningrad) to control norway sz.
-
RE: Neccesary Axis strategy
This is a good post, you outline your objectives and then explain why they are important. What you’re missing is the ‘how’. Kill the entire UK fleet plus the CA off Gibraltar? WOW! Please explain how you do this, are you baiting the UK player into scrambling his planes in 1 battle so you can win the other 2?
I would add the ‘how’ to each of the three nations and you’ve got a solid post.
-
RE: What to do with Russian fleet units
You can also stall them out, if you start in the same zone as them, as they won`t be able to pickup units in that zone, if they declare war.
nice, that is a tactic I did not know. I’m in a game now where I have 1 russian sub stuck in baltic. The German is just ignoring that sea and helping Italy with controlling the Med. Because Germany goes right before Russia, it will be almost impossible to have Denmark on the Russian turn, meaning any ships in the Baltic are locked in. In this case it looks like its better to get those ships out of the Baltic if the German will let you.
If Russia amphibs Denmark, can the sub from the baltic then escape in noncom?

RE: Changes still needed to the game, IMHO
My german partner did the typical G1 moves (killing france and half of UK navy, taking axis neturals)with a CA,SS,DD purchace…
Wow a G1 cruiser build! And it made the UK player think Sealion! Impressive. What did you build with the extra 4 ipcs Germany had? I never see cruiser builds in my games, they are not as powerful as the other capital ships.
Something to think about when invading Russia, in order to cost Russia 12 ipcs in land value, it will take you only 4 rounds.
-
RE: Das Boot!
another good tactic is when you know you’re sub is going to be sunk, try and move him to a spot that is least advantageous to the enemy, this could be in the middle of the ocean or out towards the periphery.
-
RE: Changes still needed to the game, IMHO
That was my comment earlier Gargantua. I would suggest not letting the war start so late, instead plan on a J2 attack and see if that changes things. Waiting until turn 4 means ANZAC/INDIA/and US are prepared.
-
RE: More German Subs
I’d say the sub number is fine, but no German destroyer! That is where I’d add the unit.
Remember this is 1940, Germany didn’t start with that many subs, but built tons during the war. If you want to recreate the sub war you’re going to have to build them!:)
-
RE: What to do with Russian fleet units
Is there an advantage to letting any Russians out of the baltic? Or letting the northern sub in? In our games the German controls who enters and goes, its not an all or nothing proposition, perhaps thats wrong.
Really surprised this isn’t gaining any attention, I guess most people disregard that 32 ipcs. Odd since my russian fleet units tend to pay for themselves in either blocking or attacking duties.
What do people do with the fleet units when Germany goes full barbarossa(no carrier build) do you plan on sinking baltic fleet when barbarossa begins?
-
What to do with Russian fleet units
The wording of the Denmark straits rule means that prior to Barbarossa, Russian ships can leave the Baltic(or enter) if given permission by the German player. First off, is it beneficial to Russia or Germany to have the Russian fleet mass in the Baltic or Atlantic? Is it possible for Germany to only allow surface ships or subs through, but block ships of their choice?
I’m curious what people think is the benefits of massing the Russian ships in Baltic or Atlantic.
