yes, you can ignore unescorted trns in combat movement.  battles occur after combat movement.

    • RE: Opening German move… Good or bad?

right, if things went bad in the north sea you could be down plenty of planes and even most of your subs.  This is why my G1 purchase is 1 cv 1 dd 1 sub.  That way I have the fleet protection and the skirmish units for my G2 10 trn build.  Uk can decide to forgo a Mediterranean battle and mass their fleet in a position to join new production and possibly threaten your German fleet.  If this happens though, Germany should probably go with an airforce build G2 and sack the UK fleet.

Again, its a personal preference, I believe Germany can still get maximum pressure on UK G3 even by landing a large part of the airforce in Africa G1.

    • RE: Opening German move… Good or bad?

well, 2 subs vs a CA means you should get a hit on average by the second round of combat.  If the German subs hit, then the CA dies and doesn’t fire back, so Germany has a pretty decent chance of clearing the sz with a sub remaining.

I personally don’t like how you’ve positioned your airforce.  I agree that a sub should be sent to sz 111 to be taken as a casualty, and also that you are sending perhaps 1 too many aircraft to the battle in the denmark straits.  The main issue I see with your aircraft is you are not dedicating enough to head south and defend Italy from the British.  1 ftr 1 tac in SItaly to defend the fleet and preferably at least 2 ftrs if not 2 ftrs 1 tac in Tobruk to save that army.  But this is more of personal preference of mine.

    • RE: Neccesary Axis strategy

Here’s a link to the map, does sz 109 touch scotland?   We agree that scotland has a ftr and an air base, if it also touches sz 109, why can it then not scramble?

***Edit: yes airbase, thank you ghr2.  Its not what I say its what I mean!

    • ANZAC strategy after the hammer falls

I was wondering what are some of the moves people have been making with ANZAC after war has been declared with Japan?  ANZAC has a few options from helping keep the American fleet safe, or raiding money islands.  They also could save money for a fleet build later in the game.

When I am playing ANZAC, I tend to buy a lot of subs and dd’s for attritional sea battles with Japan.  Usually attempts to get convoy raiders into the money islands and keep Japan spending on naval builds.  One of ANZAC’s con’s is that they are saddled with a 3 unit build, this makes it hard to keep a fleet supplied and I have seen Japan move into command of the seazones and ANZAC convoy raided down to 4ipcs:(.

Assume that Japan is going to try and keep ANZAC penned and America is not spending 100% of income in the pacific.

Please specify the NO you are referring too, and if you are playing OOB or Alpha 2.  If Alpha 2 here is the link to all you need to know….pssst, print it out.

    • RE: Hardest Nation to play

I also chose UK, I feel they’ve been the ‘hardest’ nation to play right since the original game in the 80s.  Having such a large empire to control and defend with minimal forces makes them the toughest.

    • RE: First Round Moves for the axis

You have a few options, one time I split my UK fleet, Italy and Germ don’t have enough assets combined to clear the med in 1 turn, after that I can retreat to Red sea or perhaps out the Atlantic.  Another option is to use ships as blockers (depriving surface ship NO) and flee, and a third option is hole up off egypt.  Of course the other option is to hit Italian fleet, which I don’t do unless he didn’t support with Germans, and also to hit Tobruk which can be a good move too.

If you go to Tobruk you can stage aircraft in Gib for air support.  A lot of this is dependant on what the Germans did.  For instance, did they take SFrance and its Naval base?

    • RE: First Round Moves for the axis

Ha!  Going off what Admiral Darlan said, if the Brit player removes his fleet from the Med then you should be able to win.  That’s a huge strategic blunder and it probably means he will make more large mistakes.  I do agree with his mention of killing the CA off Gibraltar.

Really though, the Brits should never vacate the Med on the first turn, they should stay and try and deprive Italy of its NO’s.

    • RE: AAG40 FAQ

I guess a better question is explain to me how the US couldn’t use the naval base in Gibraltar.  In your example you have US at war with Germ(hence why they can move into Morocco in the first place)  So US and UK are allies….

    • RE: Changes still needed to the game, IMHO

That is a bad NO, because Italy could just decide not to capture Algeria/Tunis/Morocco and then US cannot recapture to claim its NO.

    • RE: More German Subs

Wow, I find german subs to be soooo useful, I tend to buy 1 a round, or perhaps 3 in France if I can afford it.

It only takes 3 turns of convoy raiding for a sub to pay itself off, and lots of Subs and aircraft around UK can make it hard for the US to take that island back.

    • RE: Morrocan Air base

Okay, I’ll spell it out for you.  1 airbase in Gib and 1 airbase in Morocco lets you scramble 6 aircraft to the sz outside Gib.  This means the US(again, london is captured in this case) will have to attack the sz outside Gib with 6 ftrs defending the combined axis fleets.

If you leave your axis ships in the Med, then the US will just destroy one airbase and kill half your stuff……if you defend /OUTSIDE/ the Med, you can then scramble to that sz to help in your defense.

      Understand?

    • RE: Changes still needed to the game, IMHO

Germany has enough planes that they can make Tobruk safe, and those planes can then return to Europe G2 for the attack on UK.  Considering the large boost it gives to Italy(keep their fleet and their starting african troops) that it is an ‘oh duh’ move.  Try it, you’ll like the outcome as Italy.

    • RE: Changes still needed to the game, IMHO

That’s why I plan on Sealion G3 and land 2 aircraft in SItaly and 2-3 aircraft in Tobruk.  Sure most of my German air is away for G2, but I built all ships G1 so I have a decent threat on UKsz’s, and now thankfully I’ve saved the Italian army and fleet.

No duh Darlan, thanks for the insight.  A moroccan airbase is so you can scramble 6 planes into the sz’s.

The conclusion to this thread was that its best to get the russian sub outta the Baltic, but leave the bb for blocking purposes.

    • RE: Battleships are too Expensive

      @Razor:

      @Peck:

6 US subs in the med kills Italys income.

And in case Italy buy a destroyer, you need some bombers in range to sink the Italian destroyer before it sink all your subs, man.

Right, the Italy move is best to do as soon as possible with US, but first you have to dominate the Med.  Med first, Pacific second, Germany third is my preferred allied strategy–I just have yet to be able to execute it in my limited game experience.  I will have to look into the 3 Japanese subs off ANZAC move, its worked well against me.  3 rounds of that and the subs have paid for themselves.
