@FranceNeedsMorePower You can message me for details on the deluxe set.
@barnee Hi Barnee! I did not do ‘Over the Top’. I am not familiar with that game, sorry.
@barnee said in Introduction to World War II on the Western Front:
“just an expansion” ??? C’mon now. It’s much more than that :)
A hundred bucks doesn’t go as far as it used to. Save 10 a month and you’ll be there in no time :) Or maybe you’ll get a Christmas present :)
Unfortunately no, 100 doesn’t go that far anymore …
@FranceNeedsMorePower
It is its own game, with its own rule set and game mechanics. But the base set does not include:
You will need Axis & Allies 1940: Europe for most of the miniatures and markers. If you have Battle of the Bulge, then you have the trucks and supply tokens. If you have D-Day, you will have the fortress markers.
There is a deluxe set that has everything except the miniatures and chips, however. But since it relies on the player already owning Axis & Allies games, I have to call it an ‘expansion’. But considering that this is aimed at Axis & Allies players, I don’t think this is a problem.

It is a game of the lightening fast Blitzkrieg that shattered France in 1940, to the massive Allied push from the beaches of Normandy in 1944, the Western Front was a battlefield of strategy, sacrifice, and high stakes.
Take command of German or Allied forces in this dynamic, turn based strategy game where every choice influences the outcome of the war. Can Germany shatter the Allies in France and threaten the United Kingdom itself in 1940? In 1944, will the Allies break out from the beaches and start their relentless drive across France and into the German heartland? High stakes require bold decisions!
Outwit your enemies, manage your resources, and rewrite the story of the West in the ultimate World War II showdown!
Even though this game comes with its own rules, game mechanics and map, consider this to be an unofficial expansion to Axis & Allies 1940: Europe, as you will need the pieces from that game to play.
The game includes rules for terrain, such as forests, mountains, rivers, wetlands, and beaches. Game mechanics allow for rapid exploitation and reinforcement. The optional event cards add unpredictable events, such as storms, civil unrest, and political interference.
Two scenarios are included in the game:
The Battle of France, May 10th, 1940. The Germans are about to launch their long awaited invasion of France and the Low Countries. The French, British and Belgian armies are positioned north of an expected German attack, but the Germans have their forces ready to smash through the Ardennes forest. As the Allied player, you will need to quickly reposition your forces to blunt the German attacks, and maybe even push them back to Germany. As the German player, you have the initial advantage of the Allies being in the wrong place, but you will need to be fast to reach Paris before the Allies regroup.
D-Day to the Rhine, June 6th, 1944. The Allies land in France. Will the Germans contain the Allied breakout, or are the Germans better to defend behind the Siegfried Line? As the Allies, you will enjoy numerical superiority in planes, tanks, and men. But as you drive deeper into France and then into Germany, you will find that keeping your armies supplied is a real challenge. The German player will need to either contain the Allies, or at least slow the Allied breakout and advance to keep them out of Germany. Taking advantage of the long Allied supply lines and bad weather will be crucial …
What is included? The components found in the base set are:
In the deluxe set, the following is also included:
@DoManMacgee Ideally entering form all 3 would be nice, but the focus is on Pitomnik and Rynok
@AndrewAAGamer Sorry, I missed that. Yes, we attack Gromoslavka as well. We do try to clear Tinguta as soon as possible to get those units moving. The soviet player often does a good job of gumming up the German movements.
We attac: Kremenskaya, Koutluban, Vertyachi, Kalach, and Buzinovka on turn 1
@AndrewAAGamer I don’t have the game in front of me, but here is what our tactics have developed into so far:
Push Soviets out of the Don basin, air drop supply on the unsupplied Gerrmans in the south, and attack across the river with the purpose of taking Rynok and pitomnik on the following turns. Use air power in concentration to decisivly defeat the enemy in 1 round if possible in the spaces next to Rynok and Pitomnik. Following turns (if units available) occupy the north and south with a man screen, ideally the man screen is 2 in depth. Goal is to enter Stalingrad from Rynok and get those factories, while also entering through Pitomnik and spreading out from there to get cash. We save our mech and infantry as much as possible. We drop German supply on Pitomnik to keep Germans in supply in the city if there is a cut off. Plans are not being used in Stalingrad itself that much due to Soviets accumulating artillery through the factory and buying extra.
I suppose we are playing to win the game by sudden death, but that has never happened on the German side.
I find that in our games the Germans must get onto the City Map quickly (including from the north) AND try to maintain few casualties for any shot at winning. Pitomnik and Rynok are a must for entry points so far.
@AndrewAAGamer So far, our German tactics are to not hit every last Soviet unit on the region board, but at least push them to the north of the Don. When losing units, we are now choosing to lose artillery, Stugs, and even tanks in order to keep the force multipilers to enter the city map with. If we can preserve the force multipliers AND get them onto the city map AND get them in early AND approach from the north and center/south, they have had a decent chance of winning. But it is hard to meet all those conditions. I would add that we are not using the optional rules, as it seems to benefit the Soviets anyways.
@Hansolo88 Sorry you think I am lying about how much I have played, but I have reported on my experience. And yes, I really have played 20ish games. I have had this game since July 4th, so I have had plenty of time with it. I have played a variety of players, but I have 1 player that I have played most of my games with. Most wins are with the Soviets, as I reported. I am asking what strategies others are using to see if we can do things differently to pull a German win more oftren.
I will add that we have had the game since July. We have played about 20ish games, but have only played Race to Stalingrad. Early games were more about learning the rules and getting a feel for the best tasctics. Of those 20 games, The Soviets have won the majority of the games, and it typically is not even close, with the Germans barely getting onto the city map. I am not saying the Germans have not won in our games, but those wins are few.
I would be interested in reading about what strategies other players are using as the Germans? My current read is that that it is unbalanced in favour of the Soviets.
@Howdy I do. I would like to sell them as a lot.
Number 1 thing I recommend is stack limits!!! Giant stack of death marching across Russia is boring.
Number 2 would be a unit production limit.
