      @balungaloaf:

the democratic party and the media ARE linked.  Did everyone forget about how the journalists who are supposed to be “unbiased” met with some democratic office people and leaders on how to portray media events in the favor of democrats. IT was held behind closed doors with no mention of what was said inside.  The republicans knew this was bullcrap, but if ONLY fox news talks about it, many others are in the dark.  Then the people attending the meeting go and tell all their other liberal journalist and news friends, editors etc. on how to properly spin news coverage when wanted by the democrats.  Take that one liberal media, how many liberals know that their news is COMPLETELY BIASED.  cnn, abc, nbc, cbs, msnbc, bbc, all sorts of papers and magazines, time, nytimes, usa today, washington post, newsweek.  Weekend shows, night shows, morning shows, specials like 20/20 or 60 minutes, news on tv guide, mtv,  its terrible.  At least i got fox news.

Loaf, you do know that all the sources you just listed regurgitate, almost word for word, the AP press releases, right?  I bet, if someone hacked the AP and sent a news release that stated all the Iraqi’s died today from a horrible plague created in American biological weapons labs it would run night and day for months.  Then, when it turns out they were hacked, it would quietly die and no retraction would ever be made.

Thanks, Doc.  I really appreciate it.

I think my grandfather is ready for the last chapter - that’s why we haven’t tried anything very rigorous.  Have read about dopamine supplementation, but the effects are very limited and acute.

My grandmother is doing well and much better each day, even with some recent complications.  But I still think that they should put the nursery adjacent to the rehab center - it would do wonders.

Anyone else have their own experience?

This is about 5 minutes of color footage from WW2 aircraft.  Some of it is in action, some looks to be training.  Check it out, was pretty interesting:

I’ve been hooked on a new manga-to-animé series called “Gantz.”  Anyone else check it out?  I’d love to discuss some things about it, but don’t want to spoil it…

      @UKcommander:

Yeah, it just is a nuisance to have to take command of all Allied units to win a war.  Has anyone tried HOI Doomsday yet?

I have Doomsday, it’s better, but even more involved.  Spys and new techs.

I just finished reading the abridged memoirs of Winston Churchill, covering WWII of course. It was new for me to get the British perspective, and very informative.

Also, A Feast for Crows by George R.R. Martin.

For those about to read The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich- excellent book- I’ve read it twice. You won’t be disappointed.

Damn Hasbro!  That’s exactly why I’m confused.  Like you, I’ve spent a lot of time playing AI rather than RI…  :-D
That’s why I’m happy to see my laptop coming in the next week or so; no more playing the predictable AI.

      ?

I was hoping someone would open a thread about this.  Here’s a piece I wrote while exchanging e-mails with a friend on Lost in Translation.  Hope it doesn’t give anything away.
      –----------
Hmm…I am wondering if my comments right now are influenced by seeing Munich over the weekend.  I felt Spielberg was reaching for a particular audience, specifically the hard conservative Israelis.  While the movie isn’t sympathetic to the Palestinians, it’s not unsympathetic to them either.  But really, it creates very thin Palestinian characters without really exploring what it is they are doing.  I believe Spielberg chose this route because he wanted to appeal to those conservatives, who really don’t give a damn what the Palestinians feel or want or need.  Rather, the movie showed everything a right-wing Israeli would see:  murders, terror, etc.  It also expressed the rage, anger, and frustration of the conservatives as well.  But then it showed what the logical extension of all those feelings, what those ideas would lead to, and not on a social level, but a deeply personal one, especially how loving Israel can make you less Jewish.

As such, I don’t think this is an Israel-Palestine movie.  It’s something that has been done rarely:  an Israel-Israel movie.  It’s an attempt in my mind to bridge the gap between the deep divisions in Israeli society.  Or maybe not bridge, but convince the other side.  Hence, its appeal and its focus are tightly played on the self-destructive nature of revenge, typical in some ways of many revenge movies recently (with the notable exception of Quentin Tarrantino), but also elevating that sensibility and relating it to a concrete social dilemma.

      O

Using three boards is basically an alternative to having to write down all the info instead.  I think a btter alternative and keeps the game much more playable.  It helps if you have a third (neutral) person that can moderate between the three boards.  This can also help keep encourage each player to keep game turns short.

Imperious Leader gives a good example of the three board play with his Jutland game.  It’s under the “Other Axis and Allies Variants” section

      Thanks Jermofoot . . .
      Hmmmm
i’m not sure how to best dive in here.
      well . . .here goes.
For one - you’re right.  Do not confuse homeopathy with “natural remedies”.  And keep in mind that the thing that tends to separate the “natural producst” from “pharmaceuticals” is that while many pharmaceuticals are natural, they ALL are subject to many trials demonstrating efficacy and elucidating side effects.  Furthermore their pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics are well known.  So-called “natural products” - while invariably “natural” do not have the studies to back them up, nor is there much in terms of side-effect, pharmacokinetic or pharmacodynamic literature available.
Homeopathy is the idea that “like treats like”.  If you have a disorder/symptom complex, than the theory is that something that causes this - if given in an immeasurably tiny dose (like by diluting it by 10 nine times) should cure this.  The question is - how do you know that it is the substance that is curing it, and not some impurity in the glassware (kind of a joke really).
We had a homeopath come to give a lecture to our class.  She basically mocked herself (non-intentionally, of course).  She said stuff like:
“homeopathic cures are the safest and most efficatious treatments available”
“i nearly killed one of my children and gave another one asthma with homeopathic remedies”
“we all know that the adenovirus causes adenocarcinoma”  (this is utter nonsense.  If this were true, many of us with a common cold would die of cancer).

Having said that, there have been some trials out there:
      Study design:
      Meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
      Setting:
      Other (homeopathic practitioners)
      Synopsis
The authors performed a systematic review of randomized trials. They found 186 trials of which 119 met the authors inclusion criteria. From these, 89 provided enough data to perform meta-analysis. Studies were rated for quality. Subjects receiving homeopathy were twice as likely to benefit compared to placebo (OR 2.45, CI 2.05-2.93). If only high quality studies are used (n=26), the benefit was less (OR 1.66, CI 1.33-2.08).

so the more rigourous the study, the less benefit homeopathy appears to convey.

Sometimes as Germany I’ll take it as I am retreating from the Allies in Africa.  If I am pressing against Russia hard I prefer to conserve my forces for the drive on Russia rather than lose them in a futile attempt to hold Africa.  At the very least I can force Russia to defend Cauc. which diverts troops out of Karelia or Moscow.

Doesn’t mean I’m winning the game however  :-(
