      I was supposed to see this yesterday with friends but was up too late on Saturday and missed it.  I’ll probably take the boy to see it as I think he’ll like it.

      To me, expecting this movie to be a masterpiece is out of line. It’s like the inverse of The Longest Day - a movie full of substance, story, and good acting but absolutely atrocious “action” and depiction of war. Yet people judge that as a classic.  I don’t see why a movie that comes to entertain and executes it well can’t be regarded as high for different reasons.

      Basically, I feel like if you were disappointed you went in with the wrong expectations.

      @frimmel:

      I’ve enjoyed many of Guilermo Tel Toro’s films and given the big pile of “meh” that has been the summer movie going season this far I’m going to give it a shot. I’m feeling a bit like a gambler on a streak of bad luck who is starting to make bad decisions that will only continue the bad luck though.

      I’ve seen some reviews where they talk about it being a “whole” movie and not just some sort of installment or set-up and that the story seems to hold together.

      Part of me is still the little kid that loved Ultraman and it is least a sort of original story so what the hell.

      His movies are pretty good.  Although I don’t think the idea is very original, it’s execution appears to be exemplary (I’ve heard some bad acting, but whatever, not looking for a masterpiece here).  It really looks like almost and exact copy of Neon Genesis Evangelion. However, much of the trailer is beautiful: bright colors contrasted again dark backgrounds, fights look approachable and not a blurred mess, unique and identifiable heroes and monsters.  The reviews are mostly positive, and the negatives seem to be hung up on unreasonable expectations.

      @LHoffman:

      Looks like Transformers meets Godzilla… with not anymore substance than the former. Cannot bring my self to take a gamble on this one. To be honest it didn’t really look that appealing.

      If it didn’t look appealing, that’s your deserved opinion.  But I don’t think it looks anything like the Transformers movies.  Godzilla is closer, and it does pay homage to that, but not the same thing exactly.

      @Imperious:

      I’m seeing it today. I can’t believe movies with giant robots weren’t made before Ironman. Go figure.

      Gigantor was my favorite show as a Kid. In the early 70’s we had Rydeen, Geta Robo, and Diapolon that had the same theme but with subtitles.

      When did Ironman have a giant robot? I haven’t seen 3, though.

      There are giant robot movies - they just aren’t mainstream.

      Anyone going to see it?  Certainly doesn’t appear to be a real thought provoker, but it doesn’t need to be.  The previews look really nice, and a lot of it reminds me of Cloverfield, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Gantz.  I like the humanity vs. (something bigger than us/the unknown) and I think this will satisfy me greatly.  Any thoughts?

      @Gargantua:

      Maybe we should make an A&A Iraq variant, and see who was right?  What do you think?

      US forces can roll dice looking for WMD’s, whilst iraqi ones make secret moves to hide them, and we can have CNN as a nation too using a reporter piece that’s looking for f-ups to report.

      It will be a 3 way free for all, you know - who wins… “USA, Iraq, Media”?

      Awesome.

      I’ll take the Media-Corporate Conglomerate and smoke the other 2 easily.

      @Gargantua:

      Call it Progress.

      Call it Change.

      Call it Reform.

      Call it War.

      Like rolling the dice in Axis and Allies, anything can happen and there are no garuntees; But if you don’t like the gameboard and you want to improve your control of “progress/change/reform/victory” for your side, you have to move your pieces in play to “take the chance” on better results.

      What Peters is saying is that the Bush administration set the pieces in order to contribute to a possible “roll of the dice” in Egypt; and that some credit is deserved for this.

      Anyways - want to know who I think deserves Credit? And like Deanin his time, I was lamblasted for saying had a “level of grace” about this process?

      Mubarak.

      Unlike Assad, or Ghaddafi, Mubarak saw the writing on the wall, knew what was at stake and basically resigned without a shot fired - all the while knowing he would likely face criminal proceedings. You have to have some respect for that.

      Call it dumb.

      Some change.  Where is Egypt now?  In complete turmoil right now.  What an improvement.

      @Gargantua:

      What was wrong with the Iraq war again?

      Sorry, I tuned out to the news on it for about 5 years… far away up here in Canada you know.

      IMO, at the time, there was no significant justification for it.  It seemed pretty clear to me the motivation for it was not what was being sold to the American public, who ate it up anyway post WW2.  And the conflict of interest, cronyism and outright corruption involved in bidding contracts, infrastructure, supply, etc. just about makes me sick.  And hardly anyone even cared.  The public was duped and we are paying for our bamboozle.

      @rjpeters70:

      Civil war.

      This raises another issue:  George W. Bush, regardless of his domestic policies, went out in order to set fire to the region’s old order, and fundamentally transform the middle east away from the autocracies.  People called him insane, evil, Chimpy McHitler, et. al., but in a lot of ways, his policies laid the ground work for what is happening today.  Despite what people may think of him, he was a true progressive (radical even) when it came to foreign policy in the region.

      Wait, what?

      That is ass-backwards.  You assert he made progress, yet the end result of that - which you also assert - is Civil War.

      How does that make sense?

      I believe Gargantua is referring to the American Civil War and the American War for Independence (which itself was a civil war between English subjects).

      Besides which, I mean “Progressive” in the Marxist sense:  Tearing down authoritarian dictators in order to allow space in civil society for some new order to arise.  What Bush did, and what many neoconservatives started out as, was very much Marxist in nature:  To the barricades to destroy the old order, such that something new, hopefully better, will arise, all guided by a faith in the innate goodness of man.

      Bush was no Kissengerian realist/traditional conservative with his foreign policy.  He was a Wilsonian Progressive, make no mistake about it.  Traditionally, Progressives have loved war as a means to promote social well being and their preferred social order (Paging Woodrow Wilson, FDR, LBJ, etc…).  It’s only in the last few decades that they haven’t, due to the fellow travelling wing of the Democratic Caucus during the Cold War (paging Henry Wallace) and in an effort to be “not Bush” in the last decade (remember how out there Howard Dean was in 2003 for saying he opposed the Iraq War?  That was freaking crazy talk in 03).

      You have got to be kidding me.  You’re making a mountain out of a molehill.

      Also, I don’t think Dean was crazy.  I was one of the ones that didn’t agree the Iraq War and even demonstrated against it.  Shoulda listened to me.

      What did the last 2 American Civil wars result in?

      Would that be the War of Texas Independence and the War of Northern Aggression?

      @Uncrustable:

      You misread
      It’s at the 10 million mark in the 6th month
      That is it only sold just just over 10 million in month #6
      7 never dropped below 20

      No, you miswrote.
      Win8 sales at 6 months is on par with Win7 sales at 6 months.
      But I’ve already gone over how the market has changed, this is more a symptom of mobile computing and Apple domination in that category, which started before Win8 was ever released.  However, both Win8 and Win7 have increasing market share while XP and Vista are declining.

      Honestly this is a matter of opinion. If you like it and enjoy using it then more power to you.
      But I’d like to know from what source you get that win8 is doing better than 7, because that is a flat lie lol
      It is already down to nearly the 10million mark at 6 months, 7 never dropped below 20million

      It has sold 100 million licenses in 6 months.  10 million is outright wrong.

      @Uncrustable:

      Well of course if your an apple user you will love win8 lol
      you were probably defending vista too  :-P

      but as far as long time pc users are concerned, win8 is crap
      we have to completely forget 2 decades of pc/windows knowledge and hop over to apple’ish computing

      and as far as raw numbers are concerned win8 is actually doing worse (far worse) at this point than did vista at the same point

      Barely used Vista, and I have my complaints with Win and iOS, but nothing like you’ll see here.

      Even though PC sales are down in general, Win8 is on a better pace than Vista, and a slightly better pace than Win7.

      The only thing it has in common with iOS is the touch screen function.  I’m not sure how you get around the fundamental nature of those devices.  If you do, you might look into it as it would probably make some cash.

      @empireman:

      So which is it?  Is it exactly the same as before, or is it useless because it is completely different?  It can not be both.

      @Uncrustable:

      My girlfriend tried to use my new PC with win8 last night to do some school stuff, lol after 20mins of fumbling around to no avail she asked me what in the f*** kind of computer I bought and gave up
      I can’t wait til I get win7 on it so I can use it without getting a massive headache
      I finally got java installed on it last night so I could catch up on some one GTO games, IE10 for win8 is equally as worthless and frustrating. Chrome works tho thank God

      I don’t get it.  Why fumble around for 20 minutes?  Why take so much time to complain.  Go learn the system!

      Tell me - do you invest hundreds of dollars into anything else without taking any time to familiarize yourself with it.

      This sounds more like user error than system inability.

      @Uncrustable:

      Here’s a great quote
      "A desktop OS for tablets and a tablet OS for desktops, Windows 8 is guaranteed to disappoint nearly everyone

      From the user’s standpoint, Windows 8 is a failure – an awkward mishmash that pulls the user in two directions at once. Users attracted to the new touch-friendly Metro GUI will dislike the old touch-hostile desktop underneath. By the same token, users who rely on the traditional Windows desktop will dislike having to navigate Metro to find settings and apps they intuitively locate in Windows 7. Microsoft has moved the cheese."

      Oh and let’s not forget there isn’t a start button lol
      After 20 years its gone

      They’ll modify things a bit, but to me this just speaks to how dumb the users are.  They spend 0 time getting to know the OS and expect it to be the exact same.  It’s a tool, learn to use it.  Not many can jump in and do fine from the start…unless you’re me.

      And the complaint about the start button…give me a break.  It’s like complaining that a new car with keyless entry and keyless ignition doesn’t have a freaking key to operate.

      If you can’t go to the start menu by bringing up the charm bar and hitting start (by either touching or mousing the right side of the screen, OR hitting WIN key + c) OR SIMPLY HITTING THE WINDOWS KEY ITSELF, I seriously feel sorry for you.

      This has got to be the biggest gripe over the simplest non-issue I’ve ever seen.

      Ok, I’m done.

      For the record Jerm,

      Matthew Good is right up that socialistic, godless, pot smoking, liberalistic, and hopeless humanist point of view.

      Which I suspect may appeal to you :) I honestly think you would considerably enjoy listening to Matthew Good.

      Hey!  I’m not hopeless… ;)

      I gave it a shot, some stuff was ok.  But he’s got a lot of singer/songwriter solo guitarist stuff that I just don’t dig.  There’s something fundamentally wrong with songs missing drums/percussion, but to each their own.

      How about Jim Guthrie?  I like his stuff, and he’s a dirty Canuck.
