    • Three Board Method of Playing

I heard years ago from a friend his preferred method of playing Axis and Allies.  It involves three separate game boards.  One goes to the Axis, one goes to the Allies, and the last one is for combat movement.  Basically, it creates a “fog of war” setting that can make a game interesting.

So, the Allies deploy on their board, and the Axis on theirs.  You proceed as normal, except that when you declare combat, you place your attacking pieces in the territories you wish to invade on the “neutral” board.  Then the corresponding defenders move the defending units to the areas of the neutral board that they reside.  You resolve combat, then move surviving pieces back to your board.  IC reside on the neutral board, but AAs do not.  New purchases I think were placed on the neutral board then moved to your own board (I think).

Has anyone tried this?  How much did it change the game?  I’m really interested in trying it, but would like feedback so I don’t waste my time.  Obviously it creates a higher setting of trust in a game, but I think avid players would be serious about the game and not waste their time with cheaters.  So, I want to hear your experience.

      Thanks!

    • RE: Homeopathy. Does it work?

Don’t confuse homeopathy with standard herbal remedies.  Not exactly the same.  Actually, googling came up with an interesting page:

      http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/homeo.html

Here’s the word from the horse’s mouth:

      http://www.homeopathic.org/whatis.htm

Like I said, I believe in the power of herbs, just not in the homeopathic approach.  You’ve got many of the standard herbal fixes, and that’s wonderful.  And while I believe that the medical field is essential and great, I feel that the view can be skewed there as well (no offense CC).  Much of that comes from the nature of the practice and covering one’s behind, it’s not necessarily intended.
One other thing I forgot is that homeopathic is generally deemed safe for use by most everybody (unless you are lactose intolerant as much of the pellets have lactose in them).  I attribute this to the fact that there’s just about nothing in them but milk sugar.

P.S. Tea tree oil is great for just about any topical/skin problem as well.  For lung stuff I’d probably go with eucalyptus, particularly because of compared costs.

    • Homeopathy. Does it work?

This is mainly directed at CC, but I’m interested in all opinions.

CC - Since you are in the medical field(right?), I wanted to specifically get your opinion on it.

Here’s my take.  I work in a Cooperative grocery (about $7mil annual sales), and we have a standard Vitamin section.  This, of course, includes homeopathic medicine, and we also have a homeopath on staff (native of India - great woman).  I acknowledge that certain herbs can produce certain results, and can be used to treat a variety of problems.  However, I feel that homeopathy is based more in mysticism than herbalism, particularly due to the belief that when you dilute the extraction, it gets stronger.  That’s not how it should work, based on dosages and measurements for any other medicine, baking ingredient, etc.
On the other hand, even if it doesn’t work that way, the power of suggestion can be evident sometimes.  If it’s entirely psychosomatic (or the “placebo effect”), then it’s not necessarily worthless.  Or, perhaps it does nothing, but the patient is still convinced that it helped.  Then it’s possible it’s still worth the cost.

      What does everyone else think?

    • RE: Capital Punishment: case of Stanley "Tookie" Williams

      @ncscswitch:

On a side note (and sorry for the off-topic), it is a shame that it takes a non-practicing eclectic neo-pagan that was raised Lutheran to tell a Christian their own history in terms of the books that are and are not in their Bible, when they were selected, and when they were removed.

Doesn’t anyone do a Catechism anymore?  Doesn;t anyone take Comparative Religion?  Doesn;t anyone ever read any of the myth cycles of other cultures?

I’d probably REALLY blow folks away if I mentioned that the Gospels and the story of Jesus Christ is almost verbatim the myth cycle of Zoroastrianism, a minor religion in areas of the Middle East (modern Israel, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria primarily) that was popular in the 2nd and 3rd century BCE. (about 300 years before the time of Yeshuah of Nazareth)

Love mythology/religion myself.  A good read is The World’s Religion’s by Huston Smith.  You don’t see many religious studies unless you go to a religious based school, or reach a school of higher learning (college).  That, or maybe in larger cities.
As you’ve noted in other threads, many ideas/concepts have been adopted by emerging religions to assimilate the “pagans.”  For instance, the occurrence of Christian holidays that correspond with pagan ones.  That’s a whole other topic, though.
See you in the “Weed-Smoking Jews of Jamaica” topic.

      Yup, Nipples…
Originally the cats were named Henry & Sam, but my girlfriend’s ex wanted to name them Scrotum & Nipples.  Only Nipples actually stuck.
What’s funny is that for 3 years I still called her Sam to my girlfriend’s parents, but slipped the other day and said “Nipples” in front of them.  They had a good laugh…

Is the Venice one from TMNT?

Haven’t seen it, but it looks interesting.  Thanks for the heads-up!

      Also, Major Konings -
#9 Meet the Feebles, in case you wanted to check it out again.  Pretty crazy movie - an R-rated muppets show.  Didn’t know it was Peter Jackson who did it, though.

Can you supply your case?  I still am unclear as to how this debate proceeds, how you approach it, etc.
Then I might be able to help you.  Otherwise, being hypothetical, you rat the guy out and save your own hide.  Of course, there’s something I missing there, it can’t be that simple…

Oh yeah…Spaceballs is the sniznittle bam snip-snap slammer (another clue for the two quoter of mine)!

Here are some others I always liked…

      1. “Get away from her you b*tch!”
        No clue.
      2. “Who dies first?” (this one is obscure, bonus points for knowing it)
      3. “If you refuse, you die, she dies, everybody dies!” (another obscure one)
I swear I know these…I’ll kick myself in the butt when I see the answer.
      4. “I am serious, and don;t call me Shirley”
        Airplane!
And the most quoatable movie of all time…
“She turned me into a newt!”
“Come back here you yellow bastard! I’ll bite your legs off!”
“And they ate Robin’s minstrels, and there was much rejoicing.”
"With big nasty pointy teeth! Look at the bones!
Monty Python’s Search for the Holy Grail.  Just bought Life of Brian the other day and thought about using a quote.

Yeah, I don’t snipe too much.  I know how it may be gratifying for some, but I love charging into the fray and somehow managing to survive.
I’m the type of guy who out-snipes a sniper without a sniper rifle….that or I knife you in the back.  Sometimes you pesky snipers just need a couple stabs, and then you really are nice guys!

    • RE: Geek knows Geek.

yeah, nut, you’ve told us about how you’ve never had a girlfriend, but what about all those manfriends you had!!! don’t deny it!  the girls can’t elbow past the giant man-posse that surrounds you - no wonder you’ve had no chance with the fairer sex!!!  how would you know that you weren’t gay if you’ve never had a girlfriend! you might not like it!!

      sorry…just jealous…can’t even get a man-trio myself…

Nah, don’t sweat it about the girl thing.  The time will come.  Girls didn’t really notice me all that much in high school, although I didn’t try too much, but they did in college!  Even if they had noticed me, I’m not sure it would have been worthwhile.  In a few years you’ll be thinking “girls - can’t live with em, can’t stuff em in a sack.”  Eh, just joking.  Until that time, just appreciate Rosie’s company - she’ll never do you wrong.  You’re only 17 (right?), a lot will happen before your time is up.

I love it: “yes i agree, it is pointless, but thats the point.”

Ok, I’ll take a stab at things.  Keep in mind that I only know one for sure, so most are guesses (but somewhat educated - I checked your suggestions of movies to watch from another thread, although not much help there).
      MK:

      1. You’ve given us…
      2. Clerks
      3. Ghostbusters 2
      4. Ernest Goes to Camp
      5. Blazing Saddles
      6. Stripes
      7. Spinal Tap (or, howabout: “You can’t really dust for vomit, can you?”)
      8. Three Men & A Baby
        M36:
      9. The Princess Bride
      10. The Color Purple

And now, a couple from me:

“He had sex with my momma! Why?!” or “Up with hope, down with dope!”
      “Your helmet is so big…”
“She’s got more kids than the Wayans mama.”

    • RE: John Stewart vs Bill O'Reilly

I knew of the feud Billy was building by making the stoner comment.  I was lucky to be at a friend’s house (don’t have cable) when he was on The Daily Show.  For everything he had said, Jon was very well-mannered and, as far as I could see, acted like an adult about the whole thing.  Never took a shot at Bill.
Maybe O’Reilly has a vision, but he sure as hell doesn’t approach it properly.  He is a living tabloid, and it’s a shame that a mock news show (for the sake of comedy) has more informed viewers than a self-proclaimed “no-spin” news show.
And yes, I’ve watched O’Reilly’s show.  It’s to news what the WWE is to sports.
