    • While some are fightin' and dyin'…

      …I’m fatherin’ and cryin’.

      9lb. 1oz. healthy baby boy - Nolan Emile “Milo” Roahrig - born 11:56 pm on December 22nd.  Not sure how to measure the duration of the laboring process but it was around 22 hours from initial puncture of the amniotic sac until he emerged fully from the womb.  The best Christmas present I’ve ever had.

      All I can say is that it has been awesome.  And tiring, but mostly awesome.  This should excuse me from my inactivity as of late.  I’ll be glad to get back to the great discussions once everything is in order.

      Hope everyone has enjoyed their holidays and time off.

    • RE: What is gravity? What is the effect of a solar eclipse?

      Nobody told you?  Guess Germany’s education system is inferior to the U.S. Don’t they have, like, books and stuff over there?
      During solar eclipses, flying lunar monkeys descend upon the Earth, and become a nuisance to the planet’s barometric pressure, rotational speed, and gravity - much like a gremlin to a WW2 bomber.  Unfortunately, it’s nearly impossible to clip their wings and put them in a zoo, so we’ll have to continue suffering under their oppressive rule.  I, for one, welcome our flying lunar monkey overlords!  I’m just glad they aren’t communists…

      Back to being serious - I think some confusion can be attributed to the method of simulating gravity in an orbiting space station by rotating it on a central axis.  Not gravity, but the perception could be the same, I guess (can’t say I’ve been in an orbiting space station).

      @Mary:

      I resolve to drink less. It’s becoming a problem. I’m half in the bag right now. Going through a rough time, psychologically (depersonalization, if anyone cares, lol). I propose a new saint: Saint Peter Vella! (for those not in the know, Peter Vella makes farily decent boxed wine).

      Edit: I like IL’s resolutions. Good luck with them!
      Further Edit: Sheesh, what a sad resolution.

      Well…I was going to make a joke about not drinking anymore when I read & reply to excuse my posts, but… (obviously a faux pas - sorry about your situation, Mary)

      I guess I’ll just have to layoff the crack instead!  :roll:    <— looks like a crackhead, right?

      P.S.  Will have to try the Peter Vella, although I’m mostly a beer & bourbon kind of guy.

    • RE: Religion needs to go away

      Live and let live is definitely my motto.  Actually, that falls back on the Golden Rule (or am I wrong?).
      However, I have a problem when people tell me I’m going to Hell…that’s not very Christian at all.  The context isn’t what bothers me, it’s the audacity of their conceited claim.  But thanks, those kinda statements make me think I’m already there!  Then, I guess, they’d be right…
      As for the violence:  violence is a characteristic of humans, just as much as spirituality.  If you think that violent Muslims or Christians are violent because they are Muslim or Christian, then I’d have to disagree.  You’d be sourcing and attribute upon another attribute, and it doesn’t work that way.  I’m convinced that it’s more the type of person, and if they weren’t religious at all, they’d still have an affinity for violence.
      Now, I can respect other’s beliefs.  I happen to enjoy reading mythology, religious lore, traditions, etc., it truly fascinates me and can be quite moving (perhaps it’s what I instill in the text).  But, if you can’t respect me just the same, then I’ve no time for you (as a side note, I give people the benefit of the doubt and they have respect - until they lose it).

      Alright, this is for Jennifer.  I need some clarification on this (as I’ve not conversed with you before…):

      I’m going to agree with Janus here.  As there is no rock hard scientific proof you can present that one religion (or lack thereof) is correct and the rest are faulty, there’s no reason to be hostile.  However, there are in-duh-viduals out there that absolutely MUST convert or kill non-believers and this is where we run into problems.

      Previous to that:

      Personally, I think the only solution is to get rid of one of the two religions.  Since I’m christian based, I’d vote that it’s the muslims that are gotten rid of/retrained/converted.  But since the world is full of bleeding heart liberals, I highly doubt that will happen short of thermo-nuclear war started by a conservative hot head.  Just my two cents.

      Sarcasm?

    • RE: 8 bid, RR, Axis victory

      @ncscswitch:

      Just pointing out that in the original strategy post, the Russia navy WAS present in UK sea zone (thus 1 BB, 2 tranny, 1 sub).

      Doh - sorry.  I just saw the “Russia does whatever” and didn’t pay attention to the exact pieces when you were resolving combat.  Shouldn’t have short-changed you on that one!

      As far as finding the “perfect” move, there isn;t one.  All moves have counters.  What there are are ways to work around some of the common strategies (like Japan going central Asia to bypass the Yakut stack, spread Russia out a bit to need THREE hard points instead of only 2, and do this immediately (J1) so that there is an improved chance of Germany or Russia finding a crack in the INF to exploit.  Russia CAN’T hold everything at once if pressured against Yakut AND Novo AND Karelia AND Caucuses

      And this is why we love Japan, right?

    • RE: 8 bid, RR, Axis victory

      I have to agree that if you’re not playing for fun (unless maybe a tournament with pay-outs?), then you probably shouldn’t play.  I’d love to find the perfect strategy, but when you factor in the dice/luck, there might not be one.

      Also, have to point out (even though Maximus made his counterpoint) that with RR, most Russia players would move their sub and tranny to the UK seazone, thereby making your strategy very difficult.  Obviously, if they didn’t do that, then you might go for Sealion…

    • RE: Anti-KGF Policy. What should the Axis do?

      @Afrika:

      How?

      How do you fake an assault?  Merely by residing in the waterway (after taking NZ) next to Australia.  UK (and assumably, the other Allies) will think you’ll take it the next turn.  Maybe even shuffle some forces (such as another ship) towards Australia - landing a fighter in the East Indies could get the point across.

      Taking Mexico is easy.  If you are in the water contained by the NZ area markers, you move your ships two spaces into the waterway next to Mexico, and take it.  There’s usually no forces to defend it.  The next turn, you take Panama, which will allow movements of your ships into the Atlantic in an additional turn.  If you don’t believe me, look at the board.

    • RE: Anti-KGF Policy. What should the Axis do?

      @Deutschland_Pwns:

      That idea is intriguing, but wouldn’t it be easy for the U.S. cut off your fleet in the Atlantic. Then you’d have to go all the way around Africa or be destroyed.

      It depends on what you can afford.  Usually I have the two battleships, the AC, and a couple of fighters available (plus trannies and their load), so I’ll keep them massed - but it will depend.  The more you send, the more US resources are used to stop you.  So, I have this navy distract the US, keeping them out of Africa and Europe, which tends to balance the field, all the while whittling territories from them.  Then I try and meet up with the Germans somewhere and hold Africa, or defend the Mediterranean or Atlantic coast.
      By that time, I’m deeper into Russia and can afford to drop a ship or two and build another Navy.
      If I had the choice, I wouldn’t take the time to move around Africa, I’d fight on.  But that’s Japanese strategy…

    • RE: A victory for the terrorists

      You know, I don’t have AIDS, or HIV, so I thought maybe we shouldn’t worry about it.  In fact, strip any funding for it.  It’s not that serious, and isn’t an epidemic yet, so hey, why bother?

      Ok, slightly off-topic, but you’ve got to think of more than yourself.  I’m not saying you aren’t important, or that you shouldn’t cover your own butt (that’s why I think the Patriot Act is literal BS) - no one else is obligated but you.

      So, if it hasn’t bothered you when it was implemented, it won’t bother you when it’s shot down…American citizens aren’t the enemy.  We already have a paranoid state, we don’t need them tweaking, too.

      @ncscswitch:

      The quote is Benjamin Franklin, and the original quote (often mis-quoted) is
      “They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security”

      Yeah, yeah, of course it’s Franklin - they were supposed to look it up if they didn’t know!
      And misquotes do abound - I just happen to like the revised quote better for brevity and punch.

      @Afrika:

      It’s KGF, yo, you should be able to defeat the US navy and get the 2 IC  + 1 from NZ, which adds up. (1 inf per turn)

      I’d choose NZ before Australia.  Take NZ, fake an Australian assault the next turn and actually hit Mexico (your navy can make it).  That way, you can hold the Panama canal and send the Japanese fleet to the Atlantic.  I distracted the US for many rounds this way - they never sent anything towards Germany.

      “Those who would sacrifice freedom for security, deserve neither.” (or something of that effect…)

      • Said by REAL American hero.

      I think it’s worth repeating (first said by Yanny) - that Republicans say they want limited government, but do the complete opposite - because so many people haven’t noticed it yet.  And what does that make them?  You tell me…

    • RE: Capital Punishment: case of Stanley "Tookie" Williams

      @Zooey72:

      Is this directed at me?  Hey buddy, I’m not a Christian.  I have just read the bible (esp. the gospel) and think that it has some merit.  I have read other religions too, like the one you mentioned.  Which was the first religion to adopt a “God” and a “Satan” in the way the bible does (as well as angels).  Many think it is what Christianity was based off of.  There are still a few left (when I read about them years ago it was estimated at 100k), but not many.  Their “burial” is wierd too, (if you can call it a burial).  They leave the body out in the open to be eaten by vultures and what not.

      If I was to pick any religion that is closest to what I believe it would have to be the baha’i.  I don’t buy all of it, but most of it sounds good (I don’t agree that ALL religions have something worth studying.  Shinto and confucianism are crap IMO).  I have never spoken to a practicing member because I don’t want the illusion to be destroyed.  Christianity sounds good from the gospel, than talk to a “Christian” and see how they practice it.  Not usualy the same thing at all.

      Whoa, I never expected you to say that!  That took me by surprise.  I didn’t think people even talked about baha’i anymore…
      I’m curious - why do you find Shinto and Confucianism crap?
      I’ll start another thread as there’s much to talk about…

    • RE: Call of Duty United Offensive

      Sniping can be difficult in any FPS…especially in BF2.  Relocating is definitely key - also making the best of your shots.

      In BF2 the grenade launcher is called the “noob tube” because so many people use it for cheap shots.  Anyone can use it, but it gets crazy sometimes.  Part of it is the game itself.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve run behind someone, shot them repeatedly, only to have them turn around and fire the grenade launcher at me POINT BLANK, where they survive and I do not.  I’m sorry, but if you are wounded, I’m at full health and you do that close enough for me to slap you in the face, and the end result is I’m dead and you are alive, then something is not right.  It can get frustating.  On the other hand, it can take quite a bit of skill to angle the shot and hit just right.  So it’s a double-edged sword.
