      I’ll wait for the lab results.  The black holes of today must be doubly better or more than the ones from Einstein’s day.

    • Munich '72

      Considering the recent release of “Munich” by Spielberg, I thought I might ask how people felt about the movie (particularly in the light of current terrorism woes), or their experience with the original situation at the Olympic games.

      I wasn’t even a drunken afterthought in '72, but I watched “One Day in September” - great documentary about Munich games hostage situation, NOT about 9/11 - and it had me mesmerized about the whole thing.  I have yet to see “Munich,” so please don’t ruin the experience for me or anyone else.

      My impression on Spielberg’s movie is that he doesn’t necessary excuse the retaliatory attacks by the Israelis, and tends to project the opinion that violence makes violence, none of which is good.

      Your thoughts?

    • RE: Excellent quote from Congressman Jim Moran

      Awesome quote from him, not that I doubt you two (Yanny & CC) were already thinking the same thing.

      I might also add, in this case, you can’t fight fire with fire, everyone ends up getting burned.

      Or, “Eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.”  Apparently we don’t have to remove them to obtain ignorance, so it might not be as applicable…

      It’s not hockey, but can be even more brutal.  I watched “Murderball” last night and it was great.  I don’t think I’ve seen a separate Canada/US rivalry that’s been as volatile.  Check it out.

      My advice is to read posts twice.  Since you lose the benefit of mannerisms, intonation, inflexion of voice, etc., plain text can seem a bit forward sometimes.  Many people have a hard time grasping what’s said, and a second review can cause many realizations.

      Anyway, I’ve got a quote to add.

      “When the gods want to punish us, they answer our prayers.”

      Wonderful insight.

      So, does he mean beat them on a technical level, such as having a team of Spetsnaz assault them after the game?
      Congrats on your country’s performance.  Perhaps the Russian egos made it too hard for them to put their heads together in a little teamwork.

      Thanks for introducing us, I’d never heard that one before.  Perhaps your motto in the face of the current admin?
      An expert orator, if there ever was one.  Not the greatest on the military strategy, but decent enough…

      Bf1942 was great at the time.  In hindsight, it’s not that great, especially in the light of Bf2.

      @Zooey72:

      @ncscswitch:

      “War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things.  The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is far worse.  The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.”
      John Stewart Mill

      And hence this is why liberals are able to speak their mind, because better men them came before them and fought for it.

      Or as Falk’s cute little statement so eloquently said “soldiers are murders”.

      So, there are no liberals in the military?  Or, should I say, all of the people offering military service must be Republican, n’est pas?
      I doubt that.
      For all purposes, soldiers are murderers, at least superficially.  They are trained to be, and are sent for that exact purpose. They may not maliciously plan the death of someone and receive an excuse from the state, but the thought of killing someone must run through one’s mind once you join up…
      And nothing is worth war - even WW2 vets, seemingly the only participants in a marginally “moral” war, will say that.  You pay a price that is never fully compensated.  My fear of war is not for my own death, but of the multitude of others.  It’s my belief that war is best avoided, but accede that we will never completely rid ourselves of it.  The best way to support our troops is to strive to not use them.

      On a lighter note, I’m glad you remember the Churchill quotes: classic.  I love them.  I can just imagine a contemporary Winnie yelling the woman: “I’m Winston Churchill, biatch!”

      Just found out that the internet cafe I sometimes play at will be getting COD2 soon.  Nice!  This will be good until I get my notebook set up.
      I’ve played a bit of COD2 single player, but not enough to satisfy.

      I’ve also got the Big Red One for PS2, and it’s leaps and bounds better than the first (which was a disgrace to the COD name).  Possibly the best PS2 WW2 shooter out there.

    • RE: NCAA FB #1 and #2 the only safe places to be…

      Being from the A&M area, but still a Texan, I had a little heart in the game for the Longhorns.  It’s been a while since I’ve watched any sports, but the bowl games this weekend were exciting.  Now, if only the “Professional” athletes would play like the college guys, then maybe they’d be worth a fraction of what they really get paid.

      However, that game could have gone either way.  They are both great teams.  There never is a number 1.  It was an awesome game, and I’m glad it was so close.

    • RE: They got it Wrong to get it FIRST!

      I was up at 3am then (guess why?), and saw Nightline bring a live report about the miners being saved.  Actually, I came in the middle of it, and thought it was an old video of the PA rescue.  A couple was standing there saying that they got a call and rushed over, but couldn’t see the individuals because they needed to be checked.  Nothing specific was being said.  I wondered: is this real?  Could they be dead and they don’t want to break the horrible news?  I was informed the next day that they only found 1 alive, in critical condition.  What is his status?

      I hardly think the situation is laughable.  They were intending to give great news about a near disaster, that in actuality turned out to be false.  I would shame them if they rushed HORRIBLE news, which seems to be the standard for most news these days.

      Thanks everyone!

      Of course he’ll be an A&A fan: that’s the whole reason I got him!

      CC:
      Initially her water broke at a slow trickle, but we did have them punctured many hours later because the urge to push came on before she was fully dialated.  Once she got to the point to push, it took less than 25 minutes.  We tried the Bradley method, and she made it nearly drug-free except for a half-dose of Nubain (sp?) near the end.

      @Imperious:

      Today is the day when General Tony McAuliffe announced to the German commander: Nuts! during the battle of the bulge as his reply to surrender terms for Bastogne.

      I wonder what the german commander said when he got that reply?!

      If I recall correctly, it didn’t quite translate.  The meaning was lost.

      Ah yes…it was called Bocage.  A wonderful map, if it’s the same.  If not, I’ll still look forward to it.

      Is St. Mere-Eglise the bombed out town from the first one?

      I can’t wait to see how the BAR functions in COD2.  It was my favorite weapon in COD1, and I could usually do pretty well with it.

      Did they redo the Brecourt level?  What about the hedgerow one (can’t remember the name…)?  I never really cared for the Russian levels, because I hated playing as them and fighting against them.  The UK ones were OK.
