No, that’s not what I meant.
You based the suggestions for the house rules on historical events? Such as the proposed troop type…was that the current relative size of Spain’s forces? I don’t know…just curious.

I loved it in CoD1. Sometimes I’d use the G43, and often would prefer the MP40 over the Stg44, but either was good on the right map.
However, we are going to have to play as the Americans at some point. I love the American weapons, particularly the BAR.
To put it in your terms:
Italy is worse than France. Why bother?
You’re in trouble, IL….
…I ordered my new computer. That is, if you’re sniping on the other team. If not, I’ll cover yo @$$.
I’m guessing you are basing that historically? Is that right?
It sounds like something for advanced play as it adds so many new things to remember, but I guess if someone is agreeing to add Spain or Turkey, then they may not mind.
Sorry to jump in late.
I’ve not really played with bidding, but I could see it necessary when you get in a game with expert players.
Honestly, I think you underestimate a PA (not prince albert), and NC has the right idea, but might not be expressing the right points. One thing that would probably happen if I got a bid of even 8 IPCs for Japan is that you’d see a mainland IC almost immediately - it depends on the battle outcomes. If you bid me 3 arm, 2 inf for Japan, then that’s a definite. Maybe you factored that into your round listing, Baker, but it’s something to think about. When you play an experienced Japan player, you can see they are a powerful force. Even a meager bid to them can bring large results. Also, I’d think that with the addition of 3 arm, 2 inf, you are going to see the Japanese not only cut a line to Moscow, but clearing southern Asia to connect with Germany. That’s very dangerous for the Allies. UK may have to write off it’s holdings in Asia/Australia immediately, but that makes it so much easier for the Allies. If UK is being whittled, as is Russia, and spends most of its money defending Russia, US defending Russia & UK, then you are going to find a problem. You won’t be able to put enough pressure on Germany to back off, and simply put, Japan can apply pressure to the US as early as J3 to distract them (even with no bid). If left alone, Japan is a tiger; if left alone with a bid, Japan is a tiger with wings.
One thing that everyone is guilty of, though, is trying to estimate the way the game would play. If you are playing experienced players, which I’d assume all of you are, then you’d know that while you formulate an overall strategy, the best one is adaptable. Baker, in the case of your scenario, I’m not sure what you were expecting Germany to do. They may decide to strengthen the front and hit a weaker UK. The best thing about A&A is that there is plenty of room to maneuver, and the more fluid your side is, the better you tend to do. Can’t do anything about those bad roll days, though. When someone finds out about that, let me know.
In another thread, I proposed giving straight cash rather than actual units placed, as has been mentioned here. It may help to sustain certain strategies by going this route and help balance things. But as pointed out, that’s a major G1 buy. Perhaps you could do a combination of those two, or allow the placement of new units under certain regulations (no more than 1 new unit per territory). Or, allow IPCs that can be used only to upgrade existing units, i.e. spend 2 IPCs to upgrade an inf to an arm. That could get interesting, and adds somewhat of a gamble to the upgrade.
One thing I’ve thought about over the years, is how could someone do/plan any act of violence or death? I can’t even imagine it…I couldn’t imagine being BTK, Dahmer, Polpot, Hitler, Stalin (I know this is a broad list…), etc. Then I read about the conditions that many Palestinians have endured post-WW2. That’s when I realized that conditions are possible to create such people. It’s not so much that I excused them of their actions, but that I understood their situation. The actions of Israel, which Chengora pointed out (btw, I took it to mean Israel and not Palestinians when you said Israel), have been far from honorable. Lately, Israel has given me hope that violence won’t always be the means, and therefore, the ends, to any racial/cultural/religious dispute.
Here’s something else - if killing your countrymen is wrong, then why haven’t some of you questioned Bush, in the light of an unwarranted Iraq “war?” Needless deaths have accumulated on both sides. He went over the opinion of the global community, ended up being wrong (or knew he was wrong all along and didn’t care), and now looks like more of an ass than he was. Anyone can pull a trigger and kill one or more people (which is awful), but someone who can set the conditions for a massive conflict and does so irresponsibly is deplorable. I still believe the best way to support our troops is through restraint and never having to use them. That would be the mark of a true great politican.
Now we are setting an anti-Muslim tone in the United States, which is a lovely addition to our resume of intolerance to other groups, such as native Spanish-speakers (defined by some in the all-inclusive term Mexicans) and humans of darker hues. We create conflict in the Middle East - I guess we assumed there wasn’t enough already - and, in return, they resort to bombings and guerrilla tactics to drive us from “their” land, which seems fair as we went in with bombs and guns ablazing. Honestly, I think the US acts like an attention-whore.
I’m glad he got to do a bit before he went; but if he were still alive I’m sure he would be doing just that, and doing it well. Not to mention I’m sure he’d be raising well with Bush & co., or Gore again had he been elected. Probably Kerry, too.
I remembered a few songs I just had to add:
Velouria - The Pixies
Karma Police - Radiohead
Think - Curtis Mayfield
This topic will never die…
Yeah…inherited the Zappa taste from my father. I could listen to the entire Joe’s Garage in one sitting (I guess that’s the intent), then start it over again.
My guess would be that the Zappa family is milking the vault for all its worth. Biding their time to release new stuff to keep people like you and me hooked for decades after Frank’s death. I’d heard about the tour thing, but my guess is Dweezil (& Ahmet) has plummeted from his semi-glory on the USA show “Happy Hour.” Ever see it?
One Day in September - concerning the terrorist events at the '72 Munich Olympic Games (as a side note, I FINALLY got this in from the bookstore that had it on order). See that, then check out Spielburg’s Munich - not a documentary - for related activities.
I must second Murderball - a fantastic movie.
I haven’t seen Grizzly Man from this year, but supposedly it’s pretty good, not to mention popular. Many people who have seen both GM & Murderball have proclaimed GM to be the better of the two, so it must be great.
Le Chagrin et la Pitie (The Sorrow & The Pity) - about the French Resistance during WW2. Very good, but very long.
There’s more, but get through those and we can go on. Now I have to go rewatch Roger & Me…
And by the way - if Michael Moore did say the thing you credited him as saying, Zooey, then I guess you’ve just proven him wrong. Not only a racist, but a stupid racist at that.
Dude…we are so going to be in lockdown shortly. Gotta enjoy this while we can!
I sense the force…something is upon us…
Damn you, Yanny! You’re trying to steal my identity!
I’m also a huge Zappa fan. And, While My Guitar Gently Weeps is my favorite Beatles song (although I’m not much of a fan).
Here are some of my favorites (but I never can remember exactly at a moment like this):
Sofa #1 - FZ (really, anything off of One Size Fits All).
Watermelon in Easter Hay - FZ
What’s New in Baltimore? - FZ
We Are Not Alone - FZ
Spanish Bombs - The Clash
When the Levee Breaks - Led Zep
The Go! Team - Anything off of Thunder, Lightning, Strike
A Different City - Modest Mouse
El Scorcho - Weezer
Undone - Weezer
Electric Relaxation - A Tribe Called Quest
100% Dundee - The Roots
Pack The Pipe; Oh Shit; Somethin’ That Means Somethin’ - The Pharcyde
At Last - Etta James
Bell Bottom Blues;Wonderful Tonight - Clapton
Just about anything from the Brand New Heavies
I Walk the Thinnest Line - Dead Milkmen
Green Corn - NOFX
The Rise & Fall of Sodom & Gomorrah - Therion
Of course, there’s more, more more, but we could each take up years writing that out, right?
By the way, Zappa has material being rereleased on DVD. It may have been out for a bit, but I thought you might want a heads-up.
Yes, I concur. Gigli is a very bad movie. However, there is worse, so I don’t know what the fuss is about. And “bad” seems to be the modus operandi for any tv or movie production as of late - there are exceptions, and I’m glad for them.
Now, for the subtheme of this thread:
Too picky…every one of you…
If she’s a woman, I’m already in love. :-D
But, I must say, the extra weight accumulated in pregnancy that tends to remain post-partum is quite a delight. So, at the moment I get to enjoy a curvaceous, yet slim young lady.
Wow, I’m particularly surprised at O’Reillys list of extremes. If those thoughts are actually running through his head, then some of the statments actually impress me. But I guess he knows enough about extremes - I watched his show once or twice, and that was about all I could take.
But the O’Reilly clothing line is absolutely fabulous! Now you too can look chic and live the “life O’Reilly.”
And, by the way, it’s God’s fault. If there’s anyone to blame, it’s Him/Her/It/They/Us.
Damn Hasbro! That’s exactly why I’m confused. Like you, I’ve spent a lot of time playing AI rather than RI… :-D
That’s why I’m happy to see my laptop coming in the next week or so; no more playing the predictable AI.
I’ve not found a specific rule that denies blitzing through an open enemy territory from an amphibious landing. It may be that, just like unloading troops from a transport regularly, they drop and don’t move outside of the zone they land in. Just curious if anyone has specific guidelines that prohibit or allow this - it could change the games I play.
It’s an interesting approach, and I don’t think the possibilities of doing this are realized.
Turkey is just asking to be taken (based on the initial numbers you gave), and I feel that Spain would be an additional burden on Germany. I’m sure you could modify the troops & type, but it doesn’t seem to even the playing field with the addition of a few more troops and more territory to protect (it feels like a negation to me). If the territory value is added to their initial IPC total (Germany is now at 35, Japan 28), then that would be different and a viable option (I think).
As far as bidding goes, you could always offer the total IPCs as an addition to their 1st round purchases, rather than having them drop the units at the beginning (allowing them to immdediately attack). Maybe even have the bid to be used as upgrading existing units only, not adding any additional pieces (such as spend 1 IPC to upgrade an inf to a tank, but you couldn’t spend 3 IPCs to place another tank).
There’s even a possibility of exchanging territories. Such as, having Germany start out with holding the Caucases. It would be tricky to work in, but could change the game drastically.
Maybe try a game with your suggestion and see what happens? It could be a very different game…
@M36:
Libertarian. LOL thats even worse.
By recently you of course mean since weve been there. The terrorists have been killing their own people since we have been there, detonating car bombs when there isnt a U.S. soldier within miles.
It is unfortunate that they are their, but the target is more important. So a couple of Arab waiters get killed in the process, its definantly worth it considering the amount of people our targets would like to kill.
…and if we were never there, then we wouldn’t have this problem. So, we are still paying for a big mistake. When will this country realize that you have to stop the bleeding in order to get better?
I love carousels. Up and down, round and round…
Marine, that provides little comfort to a family when their kid dies because we accidentally blew their house up. If that happened to my son, as nice as I think I am  I think I might want a little payback against the people that did it.
Exactly…to a loved one, it won’t matter the motive. If it were deliberate, they may seek vengeance, but damage done is damage done. Either they’ll think you’re too stupid or careless, or a heartless bastard.
I would consider a terrorist as anyone that employs terrorism (nearly as hard to define), which is defined by the American Heritage Dictionary (1) and Merriam-Webster’s (2):
(1) The unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence by a person or an organized group against people or property with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies or governments, often for ideological or political reasons.
(2) The unlawful use or threat of violence esp. against the state or the public as a politically motivated means of attack or coercion; violent and intimidating gang activity
According to those definitions, you’d find Osama, Bush & co., Nazis, Stalin, etc. on the same page. I found other definitions, but they seem to be contemporary (as in terrorist: see Muslim) and conformed to stereotypes. It appears that violence is the heart of terrorism; the intent is the mind.
While the point may be neither here nor there, I’d attribute the fanatical fighting spirit in the Japanese to cultural ideals, rather than religious ones. Particularly the still resounding impact of Bushido…
