      Well gee, y’all were taking this seriously… and I could not resist Spaceballs references instead…

      “Comb the desert!”  LOL  Yep, gotta love those independent thinking storm troopers…  :mrgreen:
      (VERY appropriate icon there… for those who have seen Spaceballs)

      Bah…spare me a UK (KY) win.  I can’t take it when the rednecks mob the city because some boys can put a ball in a hoop.  I’m with you NC - let them have their fun, but don’t let it get out of hand.  Not to say the games can’t get exciting, but I don’t think Kentucky will be in the F4 this year…

      @Chengora:

      Interesting…

      More recent research has come out with a different hypothesis for the relatively limited genetic diversity:

      http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v431/n7008/abs/nature02842.html

      In essence, limited genetic variation is present today because of common but dispersed ancestry, which was “mixed” heavily.

      I didn’t read all of the links or posts (damn limited time!!), but I wanted to direct you to this month’s National Geographic.  It discusses this topic a bit, but mostly shows the limited diversity (through human genetic mutations and their appearance in certain groups) can prove the migration of humans.

      @Imperious:

      Yes and they never solved lock ness. Reason: the reality is that no such animal exists either, but they keep that damm dinosaur alive with pictures sold at the Lock Ness tourist shop. And thats good for business. Look at Rozwell… same thing. Look at the Bible… same thing. Look at the “the strange death of Hitler” same thing. Look at Elvis… same thing. Look at the election of 2000… same thing. Look at UF0’s etc… you get the point.

      The Ark on Ararat business has been going on for a while, I’m surprised they dredged it up again - no new content.
      Concerning the other stuff, I have always had interest in the supernatural/unexplainable.  While they haven’t been proven, they’ve not been disproven either.  Not saying these things exist, but I like not knowing either way, for suspense’s sake…
      What is Hitler’s “strange death?” (also, check out the movie Downfall if you get a chance - great flick).

      Bah… the bar is too heavy its like holding a cannon.

      And how is that a problem?  As long as I’m pointing it the right way…

      Oh yeah, IL.  Do you do chat in the game?  VoIP or TeamSpeak?

      @Imperious:

      somebody buy COD2 so i can plug them with my MP44. Just dont tell me i cant do the “bunny hop” in the game and ill will never get hit… well allmost never… I love standing behind a sniper a watch him before i clobber him with the butt of my rifle.

      I’m getting there.  It’s a three paycheck month, not to mention profit sharing, and I anticipate buying it soon.  Beating single player in two difficulties has left me craving multiplayer.  We’ll see how your MP44 stands up against my tried & true BAR!

      @M36:

      it doesnt really make sense to have a health bar in most games anyway. You get shot, your out.

      maybe if you get hit in your kevlar than your good, but that wasnt around in ww2.

      Thats why I like Battlefont2, only your armor is between you and death. :mrgreen:

      What’s Battlefront2?
      You’re not thinking of Battlefield 2 are you?  If so, I think a challenge is in order.  :-D

    • RE: King of the WW2 FPS's

      @Revelade:

      I really want a shooter with no HUD, meaning no ammo number, no health meter, no CROSSHAIR.

      I really enjoy DoD, (Day of Defeat), even the first one. Death is in a matter of seconds, not a minute like in Counter Strike. I’d like to see as far as they can get with realism.

      Most games you can at least turn crosshairs off.  Just check the options.  Some have customizable HUDs as well.  Doesn’t DoD show your ammo & health (as well as a crosshair by default), though?

      I had a great time playing the first DoD back in the day, but can’t get in to the newest version of it.  Not to mention I’d rather not think about trying out Steam again.  Although, Red Orchestra may change my mind…

      5 forces you to work with guys that do not think in the same light… Of course this does not apply to newbs who you tell what to do…

      You WILL attack Brazil.  There’s no reason not to!  It’s completely undefended!!  And 3 IPCs!!!

    • RE: King of the WW2 FPS's

      Oh yeah, IL.  Forgot to mention this:

      The thought of a massive battlefield game with BiA gameplay makes me want to clean my guns and turn up some music.  That would be the greatest.  I liked BF1942 a lot, but it’s still like a war between a bunch of commandos and NPCs.  If there were all kinds of squad leaders with an actual in game command structure (based on victories and experience) where players are the officers and commanders, that would be the ultimate online game.

      What you wish for is granted in Battlefield 2, although still there are people who aren’t team players.  It’s not WW2, but it blows BF1942 out of the water.  Voice chat is the bomb!

      You can find the Ardennes offensive in a variety of games : COD1, for instance.

    • RE: How many Players is the perfect number for Axis and Allies?

      @Octopus:

      I think two players is the best for the following reason.  The Allies must have complete coordination to win.  The Germans and Japanese can act individually and still be quite competitive, but if the Allies are not in agreement on a single strategy, they are lost.

      To emphasize the matter further, try not having any table talk to plan strategies.  The Allies would most likely lose.

      Five players is fun for a friendly game to get people involved, but once it becomes serious, 1 on 1 is best for game play.

      That was exactly what I was going to say.  I play for fun, and love a challenge, but enjoy 5 players most.  This clearly puts the Axis at an advantage.  Coordination is definitely the Allies’ strength, so when there are only two players, the Axis have a harder time.

      (except Kessen perhaps….but that is touted as one)

      Mmm…Kessen <drool>…
      Love the first one, and the third isn’t bad, but as much as I like the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, I couldn’t swallow number 2.

      CoD is still a very good game like MoH, but I resent that you can play as the Soviets but not the Wermacht.  I am hoping they branch out in to the Pacific and even into the Sino-Japanese war perhaps.

      I was going to ask your opinion on this (I could only guess your answer  :roll:), and I feel that both a German perspective and a Pacific theater game are in order.  I’ve heard the team wants to keep strictly European, but hopefully they will change their minds…</drool>

    • RE: King of the WW2 FPS's

      I have to agree with IL on the quality of games.  I just find COD 1 & 2 to be everything I dreamed of.  However, I wouldn’t discredit BIA and MOH.

      MOH definitely set the tone and was great in its time.  COD just came along and did it better, plus a few bonuses (iron sights, graphics, playability, etc….)  I’d say COD also has the best AI and “fluff” (sounds, dying animations, level design, etc.)

      I have to give praise to BIA, though.  Its better for realism, and the strategy of squad combat makes the replay value go up.  Not to mention the story is good and multiplayer is fresh with so many options - you can be the Joes or Jerries.  I’d recommend it CC, but don’t neglect Call of Duty.  Both have non-stop action, but if you want to think a bit more, go with BIA.

      By the way, IL, I just got a not-so-legal version of COD2 to test it on my laptop.  Runs b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l, so I’ll pick up the real thing soon a get with you online.  I love the tweaks they made to the weapons, and glad they left the BA-mfin’-R true to the 1st game.

      What makes it special to you?  Curious as I’m ignorant about it.

    • RE: Modern warfare & safety…Robots

      @Chengora:

      Yeah, Hokkaido was kind of a weird experience for me.  The group I was working for had a major success, so it decided to take everyone to Hokkaido in the dead of winter.  So, we ended up playing with snow and exploring a glacier.  This is presumably because at that time I was working in a tropical country, so a lot of people there had never seen snow before.  Beautiful place and very sparsely populated.  Still, I hate shoveling snow, especially since I had to help my parents do it starting at age five, and we were too cheap to by a snow blower (well, at least not until I was 16).  So, standing on a glacier when Japanese civilization, culture, and food were so close by lost its charm kind of quickly.  :-D

      And I agree, I think the U.S. military does want it to cut down on casualties, although it’s my understanding that they will eventually move into “superhuman” combat.  For example, planes operating in G-force environments far in excess of human sustainability.

      I must admit, however, that underlying my concerns regarding the use of machines, I find all of this incredibly cool.  :-)

      I’m always awed by technology - probably the same way that Oppenheimer felt after the first nuclear test.  It can create & destroy.  Awesome (and not in the Valley Girl way).

      You guys are making me envious.  I’ve always wanted to go to Japan.  I’m sure I’d enjoy the island Hokkaido less than the others, but I’d take it!  By the way, Hokkaido was the last island to be assimilated into Japan of the major islands, which may be why it’s still “out there.”  I’m sure the cold and rare arable land doesn’t help either….

      @Janus1:

      38 minutes, and I know that because I tend to watch the entire dvd set of The Simpsons in one sitting when they release a new season.

      how is that possible? simpsons is a 30-min show, so it doesnt use a standard hour

      D’oh…was thinking Simpsons but meant another show…which I won’t disclose because it’s a guilty pleasure, not to mention an embarassing one.  :evil:

      @dezrtfish:

      I’d like to hear his answer, because as far as I remember no one knows for sure.  I believe there are referencs to fliping the digitus infamis back to roman and even greek times.  Of course there it that story from, I believe the hundred years war, where the brits waved two fingers at the french who had thretened to cut them off.  But even so that was two fingers not just one. :)

      Well, maybe this isn’t as clear cut as I thought the answer was.  It’s true that it’s not known for sure, but the French/British connection is supposed to be generally accepted source.  Brit longbowmen were fantastic archers, so captured Brits had their middle fingers cut off (by the French) to keep them from using bows ever again.  In defiance, English archers would hold up their middle finger to show the French they were still useable.  And yes, dezrtfish is right, two fingers were also used.  Ok, so, bad question….

      Here’s a better one.

      @Yanny:

      Since GG didn’t ask a question, I’ll ask another one. Remember, when you answer ask another question.

      On a standard prime time network 1 hour TV show (Think CSI, House, 24, the West Wing, etc), how much of the 1 hour is used for commercials and how much for the show?

      38 minutes, and I know that because I tend to watch the entire dvd set of The Simpsons in one sitting when they release a new season.
