    • RE: Windows 8

      I know “you” didn’t say these things, but I felt compelled to respond.  And no, I don’t have Win 8 myself, actually everything I have is Apple (all gifts), except for my work computer (Win7)

      @Uncrustable:

      1. Metro, aka Modern: An ugly, useless interface.
      I said it before, I’ll say it again: Metro, or whatever you want to call it, may make an OK tablet interface, but it’s ugly and useless on the desktop. It requires users to forget everything they ever learned about Windows and learn an entirely new way of doing things for no real reason. To quote a popularly held opinion, Metro is “awful.”

      True, you can use a more traditional Windows interface, but you know what would have been a lot better? If Microsoft had just kept  the Windows 7 Aero interface for the desktop version of Windows 8 and give up this idea that the Metro touch-friendly interface is for every device.

      I completely disagree…it’s sleeker to me.  It’s also not useless if you take all of 30 seconds to see what’s changed.  Sure, I missed the start menu, but in 30 minutes I was used to it.  Also, SP1 will reinstate the Start menu, so there you go.

      2. Windows 8 brought nothing innovative to the desktop.
      Can you tell me one new thing that Windows 8 brought to the desktop that was truly innovative? Exciting? Engaging? I can’t. Windows 8 is faster than Windows 7, but that’s about it – and that dual interface mess makes it slower for practical purposes.

      I’m not sure I can think of much as far as innovation goes, except the entire concept of a single OS for all devices.  It doesn’t need to be innovative. Saying that all you can see is that it’s faster than previous incarnations shows how little you know about it.  It has more features, supports more (new) tech standards (USB 3.0, for example), more secure, and more adaptable.

      3. Developers hate it.
      I said all along programmers wouldn’t like throwing out their hard-won .NET, Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) and Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) expertise to work natively on Windows 8. I was right. Gabe Newell, co-founder and managing director of video game company Valve, said it best: “Windows 8 is a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space.” He then started moving his Steam game empire to Linux.

      First, there is so much misinformation, you can almost completely ignore this message.  Let’s just focus on the quote and following statement to Gabe Newell.
      Steam didn’t move to Linux, it added support for Linux - an announcement made BEFORE his dumb quote.  There is no developing issue for the platform.  What Gabe and others complained about was the centralized Windows Store, and how it was closer to what Apple and Android do than what used to be - not the OS itself (and no one complains about those setups).  Additionally, Gabe then announced the Steam Box, a Steam PC, so changes in Win 8 affect his bottom line, so that’s why he’s complaining.  Not anything to do with the OS as a whole.

      4. Legacy Windows 7 users aren’t moving.
      We saw this happen before with Vista and XP. Then, as now, the new operating system – Vista – was not  better than the old operating system – XP – so very few people moved to it. We’re seeing it again now.

      This is so dumb it doesn’t really deserve an answer, but here goes.  This is how it always goes for any Win release, probably for any OS.  Win8 is on a better pace than Win7 for % of users at the 6 month period, even though Vista was crap.  Why?  Because most stayed on XP.  Completely negates everything said here.  BTW, XP still has 20% of the Win OS market an OS that’s almost 13 YEARS OLD (Vista never even had 20% of the market).

      In addition, in an economy that’s still not moving forward quickly, who really wants to move from tried-and-true Windows 7 to new, expensive Windows 8 PCs? As Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu observed, the $500 to $1200 price tags slapped on Windows 8 hardware makes it “uncompetitive” in a world where people want iPads and Android tablets.

      How is the price point on hardware Microsoft’s fault?  Do you blame Ford for gas prices too?  So stupid.  It’s also comparing Win8 computers, All-in-ones and laptops prices to tablets (btw, Win8 tablets are no more expensive than iPads, often less so).  We compare Apples to Apples, not Apples to watermelons.

      5. Tablet, smartphone, and desktop compe tition.
      If you are going to buy a new computing device in 2013, chances are it’s going to be an Apple iPad, an inexpensive Android tablet, or a Chromebook. The PC desktop isn’t dead, but it’s not very profitable either – and Windows 8 isn’t helping PC sales.

      Microsoft has to know this. If Microsoft does indeed start selling, or rather renting, Microsoft Office for iPad, you’ll know they’ve seen the light. Microsoft’s future then will not lie in operating system and application sales, but in services.

      And Windows 8? Like Vista before it, Microsoft will re-release an older version of Windows, Windows 7 this time instead of XP, and start talking about wonderful Windows Blue, the next version of Windows, will be."

      PC sales have declined far earlier than since Win 8 was released (and actually loss of sales has decreased since then), this is just the fact that mobile devices are popular.  Most people don’t need a PC, and with the advent of more powerful phones, they don’t even bother with a tablet.  It’s just redundant.  But the PC still has its uses for the time being.  And yes, why buy a PC when a mobile device can do everything you need AND you can take it with you.  This is a no brainer and has nothing to do with Win8.  Furthermore, Win8 was released to capture some of this market, so it was a wise move on their part.  You won’t see a rerelease of Win7.  It’s still available for purchase, why in the hell would it be rereleased?  I’m not sure what services are referring to.  MS does OS and Apps, primarily. Releasing Office for the iPad (which probably won’t happen at least for a while because it encourages sales of Win8 as an exclusive - although I disagree with this view, it’s a valid argument) is in fact, profiting from Application sales.  It’s not a service.

      Honestly there is nothing better to say than windows 8 is the worse piece of horse manure to ever have been created. Linux here is your chance to shine
      The retards over at Microsoft are simply mind boggling drunken raging lunatics

      I hope they all get fired, morons

      Well, it’s not, but ok.  I think when it comes to just Win OSes, Vista, Win ME, and Win 3.X (although good for its time) are all far, far, worse.  Linux already shines, but the mass market isn’t going to delve into anything Unix-based besides Apple.  That’s a done deal, won’t happen - too complicated for them.

      Win 8 gives me a nice medium of a stable platform that I can readily work in and configure without being restricted by an OS and hardware standard like Apple.

      Although I’m very tempted to get a ChromeBook.

      And Apple is doing the same thing with iOS…there will be no OS for desktops and one for mobile devices.  This is just the first iteration - it will (ideally) get better.

      And I actually like the 2012/13 edition of Win stuff, particularly the new clean, sharp look - Office, Win8, Server 2012 (I’m studying this one to get my MCSE again - have an NT 4.0 from right out of high school…13 years ago).

      Canadian music is so weird.

      More like Matthew BAD. Amirite?

      And what exactly are you listening to? Soft Jazz? and 90’s rap?

      Maybe the Mario theme song on your Original NES?

      I was just joking, I haven’t even listened to his stuff.  Just never heard of him.

      Funny you should mention it…one of my favorite bands (The Advantage) only does NES cover songs.

      In my 6 CD player in my car currently:

      Kid Cudi - Man on the Moon
      Ratatat - Classics
      The Samuel Jackson 5 - Easily Misunderstood
      Misfits - Greatest Hits
      Parlour (Louisville band) - forget the album title
      The Advantage - The Advantage

      @Gargantua:

      Isn’t Nickel Back a Canadian band too? lol…

      Yup…You can keep them, and Celine Dion.

      I’ve gotten used to it, for the most part.  I deal with it some being IT support.  Win7 is preferred, but 8 is not so bad.

      And remember, they are just catering to their clientele. If you don’t like it, learn Linux/BSD/Debian, etc.

      And to me…Macs are for the dummies, not Windows.

      @aequitas:

      Allāhu Akbar - The phrase literally means “God is greater” and is used in a worshipping manner; whereof “Oh my God” more a negative phrase becomes if you are not finishing your sentence.

      Imagine calling somebody over and over without adressing the issue!

      I didn’t mean a direct analog.  More that we invoke “god phrases” pretty frequently, so it doesn’t seem as uncommon.  Godspeed, Go with God, God Bless, the one I mentioned earlier…etc.  It’s not that out of place.

      I’m sure when it comes to war people say the craziest shit anyway.

      @DarthShizNit:

      No, even if we assume it’s their “oh my god” type thing, it’s still annoying as hell how many damn times they say it. Also, in the second video that’s a T-55 and they actually don’t hit it, they hit the truck behind it, so really, that tank survived many allah snackbars.

      Not the exact same, but same principal.

      If it’s annoying then don’t watch the video?  Not sure what to tell you, but you’re an adult and should be able to figure it out.

      I take that to be the equivalent of “Oh my God!”, which is pretty routine around here, even if you aren’t religious when a pants-shitting moment happens.

      @Imperious:

      Told us what?  You parroted what everyone else said.  Should have been over in 6.

      I told you they would go over 180, I told you Lebron would score +30, I told you Wade would score 20+, I told you to bet the line but don’t give up more than 6 points, i told you Heat would win.

      What I’m saying is this is not news.  Both teams averaged over 100pts a game during the regular season, and every single Finals game was 180+.  Lebron averaged over 30 the majority of the series, specifically the last 4 games.  Wade had no issue scoring unless no one else was.  I also don’t bet, so that’s useless to me even though you lost that one.

      Wade will be traded, or should for another younger 20+ PPG. Ginobili should be traded.  Bosh won’t be traded. Heck his rebound in game 6 and all the intangibles he has makes him a keeper.

      There’s not a single person talking about this except you.  Their #1 and #2 pieces are LBJ and Wade.  Bosh is a distant 3.  If anyone is traded, it’s him.  He’s the only one with value that is expendable.  Who would take Ginobili except a crap team?  He’ll retire before they even think of trading him.  Bosh does well with other scorers around him and not facing big men.  He’s too chicken to really go toe-to-toe unless his facing people smaller than him.

      If Duncan leaves Pop may follow, but that team will be in decline next year due to age issues.

      Without a doubt, they will leave together.  It’s already been expressed.  I wouldn’t be surprised if it was this offseason, whether they won or not.  But the truth is, they have age, but they have a great core of role players.  And the aging hasn’t been that bad.  Duncan and Parker weren’t quite the same a year and two ago, this year they lit it up.  Manu was fine except the Finals in one game - otherwise he played his role.  Kawhi Leonard will be a star, and I’ve said that since he was still with San Diego St.  Danny Green may yet find his mark.  Not even going to move on because it’s moot now.  It was a good mix of young up and coming players and seasoned veterans and it worked.

      @Imperious:

      See told you.

      game went over 180
      James scores 30+
      Wade 20+
      Heat win, James MVP– But Manu Ginobili could be a 6th Heat player due to those turnovers.

      He will be released for good.

      To win next year, Heat need to get a consistent 20+ scorer and probably trade Wade.

      Told us what?  You parroted what everyone else said.  Should have been over in 6.

      Of course the best player in the game gets MVP - he may even have gotten it if the Heat lost.

      Manu, Pop, and Duncan all talked about retiring after this year.  There is no releasing anyone - and should they decide to stay they should keep it as is.  They stood toe to toe with a team the majority describe as the best this year, perhaps top all time.

      You don’t release a franchise player like Wade who can still play.  Although maybe that’s what Heat fans expect - who gives a fark as long as we win?  He won’t be traded unless he asks to be (which he won’t as long as Lebron is there)

      You trade Bosh.  Did he even score last night?  Last I checked with around 5 mins left when I tried to get to bed only 5 players on the Heat had scored, and he wasn’t one of them.

      Although you could keep him because apparently he can get away with a half tackle to save an elimination game.

      @Imperious:

      he will be spent for game 7 after scoring 30 and 17 boards. He figured that was his final game, now psychologically he is broken that he didn’t get it done with his best effort.

      He got his rest just like everyone else - I don’t think it’s as much as a factor as you think.  If that’s the case, the Heat are in trouble because they would be in the same boat.

      Wade is tired, but he doesn’t need to fly and get ready as he is already home. And he didn’t empty the tank in that game. He kinda did in game 4. He goes up and down. In G4 he game maximum effort, then took a break in 5 and 6. i think he’ll raise again one last time in g7.

      Fly?  From where?  The Heat and Spurs have been in Miami since at least Saturday and haven’t left.  Wade’s injuries aren’t fully healed and he’s been pushing it.  He might get another game, but I’d say his status is more in question than Duncan’s.  Duncan is going to do what he’s done for 17 years in the NBA.

      I think they will trade him in some move to get a younger playmate for King James. For James to have a run of say 4-5 Finals, he will need a solid 20 point number two. Wade is now at a stage where he can give you good games but not consistently good games.

      Bad knees.

      Bosh would go before Wade.  Even if the Heat lose tonight, the bandwagon fans will jump ship but the team will remain more or less the same for another year (unless I have my free agency times mixed up).  They might even decide to continue.  3 years is just getting into finding your swing of things with a team - which showed in their regular season play.

      See they won.

      Now they win 3rd game and close out in game 6.

      I don’t think they win the 3rd game, but the series is still in the air.  SA just didn’t have it together, they were closer than they should have been with that many TOs, missed foul shots, blocks.  They didn’t play smart and didn’t have a grasp of fundamentals - essentially didn’t play like the epitome of their whole approach to basketball.

      Honestly, the SA big 3 have not played too well.  Timmy a bit, Tony Parker for one game.  Manu has been mostly garbage throughout the playoffs.  If they get clicking (and no doubt they will), this is a different series.

      Miami will still win next game. It will be a must win situation where SA is ahead for 3 quarters and Miami steals it in 4th.

      That’s the opposite of how both teams have been this year, pretty much.

      If SA is ahead for 3 quarters in SA, they will stay ahead for the 4th.  Miami pretty much has to have a whole game like the 2nd half of game 2 to keep it a series, I feel.  They may win 1 more, but the momentum is by far and away with SA.
