Allegedly I am closing on a house on Friday.  I say allegedly because I still don’t have a frazzing CLEAR TO CLOSE from the bank…(hey, they only preapproved the mortgage 4 months ago, I guess I am being unrealistic to think they MIGHT have the records in order so soon!)

So if I do close, I will be moving, and I won’t have internet setup yet.

      @Cmdr:

As I do every year, I post my favorite Christmas Poem to wish you all a very Merry Christmas!

This year, I include a link to YouTube so you can listen to the music that has always accompanied this poem (in my mind at least.): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8D-OL-KQOt4

_With medals and badges, awards of all kind
A sober thought came through my mind.
For this house was different, so dark and dreary,
I knew I had found the home of a soldier, once I could see clearly.

The soldier awakened and I heard a rough voice,
      “Santa don’t cry, this life is my choice;
I fight for freedom, I don’t ask for more,
my life is my God, my country, my Corps.”

So I took off my jacket, the one made of red,
And I covered this Soldier from his toes to his head.
And I put on his T-shirt of gray and black,
With an eagle and an Army patch embroidered on back._

A Marine stationed in Okinawa, Japan wrote this poem. (Allegedly, from what I have been told, in other words, don’t go b*tch’n and moan’n that some yahoo in Uzbekistan who was constipated on a Monday morning wrote it, I was told it was a Marine in Okinawa, Japan and that’s who I am giving credit too until informed otherwise.)

I had to look it up because the emboldened items are not congruent.  Apparently a Marine wrote it for Leathernecks magazine, and others have come behind and modified it, like this one.  Here’s the original:
      Merry Christmas, My Friend

_Twas the night before Christmas, he lived all alone,
In a one bedroom house made of plaster & stone.

I had come down the chimney, with presents to give
and to see just who in this home did live

As I looked all about, a strange sight I did see,
no tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.
No stocking by the fire, just boots filled with sand.
On the wall hung pictures of a far distant land.

With medals and badges, awards of all kind,
a sobering thought soon came to my mind.
For this house was different, unlike any I’d seen.
This was the home of a U.S. Marine.

I’d heard stories about them, I had to see more,
so I walked down the hall and pushed open the door.
And there he lay sleeping, silent, alone,
Curled up on the floor in his one-bedroom home.

He seemed so gentle, his face so serene,
      Not how I pictured a U.S. Marine.
Was this the hero, of whom I’d just read?
Curled up in his poncho, a floor for his bed?

His head was clean-shaven, his weathered face tan.
I soon understood, this was more than a man.
For I realized the families that I saw that night,
owed their lives to these men, who were willing to fight.

Soon around the Nation, the children would play,
And grown-ups would celebrate on a bright Christmas day.
They all enjoyed freedom, each month and all year,
because of Marines like this one lying here.

I couldn’t help wonder how many lay alone,
on a cold Christmas Eve, in a land far from home.
Just the very thought brought a tear to my eye.
I dropped to my knees and I started to cry.

He must have awoken, for I heard a rough voice,
“Santa, don’t cry, this life is my choice
I fight for freedom, I don’t ask for more.
My life is my God, my country, my Corps.”

With that he rolled over, drifted off into sleep,
I couldn’t control it, I continued to weep.

I watched him for hours, so silent and still.
I noticed he shivered from the cold night’s chill.
So I took off my jacket, the one made of red,
and covered this Marine from his toes to his head.
Then I put on his T-shirt of scarlet and gold,
with an eagle, globe and anchor emblazoned so bold.
And although it barely fit me, I began to swell with pride,
and for one shining moment, I was Marine Corps deep inside.

I didn’t want to leave him so quiet in the night,
this guardian of honor so willing to fight.
But half asleep he rolled over, and in a voice clean and pure,
said “Carry on, Santa, it’s Christmas Day, all secure.”
One look at my watch and I knew he was right,
Merry Christmas my friend, Semper Fi and goodnight._

I could always go to work early, as long as no one sees me enter the building no one will ask me for help and I could login from the employee lounge. lol.

But thanks for the well wishes.  I have this as planned out as possible, I think.  right down to the extra packets of coffee grounds just in case the coffee doesn’t get found on day one!

I highly doubt you can push me out of Scandinavia and Southern Europe both.
And even if you could, you’d never ever conquer Egypt for a European win.

But since you sound so confident, I’d love to play for 3-4 more rounds just for the fun. If that’s okay for you.
In this case, it’s your turn with Italy :-)

      @allweneedislove:

      @MrRoboto:

Since I’ve not seen anyone so far who’s in favor of the 6VC rule in the Pacific, wouldn’t it be wise to change that rule for our 2014 league?

      Victory conditions:

Axis Victory: 8 European Victory Cities OR 3 out of (Sydney, Calcutta, Honolulu, San Fransisco). Maintain control of one of their own capitals.
Allied Victory: Berlin and Rome and Japan are under allied control and allies maintain control of one of their own capitals.

It’s not such a big change and keeps it simple, but has great effects. USA will not be forced to spend very early, very much IPC to prevent a fast Japanese Victory. It opens up the option of spending Atlantic first to pressure Germany.

most people do not say when they are in favour of the status quo.

i have not seen anyone in favour of keeping germany as a playable power. this does not mean that everyone thinks the game would be better without playing germany.

coincidentally, i just started a topic about why global 1940 is so great. and i believe the most important change was the victory conditions.
      http://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?topic=32258.0

Yeah I expressed myself very poorly here.
I was talking about discussions that were regarded specifically to the victory conditions. I’ve seen a lot of people argue that the Japanese victory condition is lackluster (Have a look at the thread “cheesiest things in global 1940” (http://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?topic=32187.0).

      @seththenewb:

Nope, you’re thinking of Bold. Check my record, I’ve played a cross section of the league. Now you can amend that to

“I don’t want to play tier 1 players”

And that’ll make sense and I’ll understand.

Well, I suppose I could beat you at a few games next year - if you insist.

Bid is 48 IPC with the caveat of only one unit per territory.
      No technology.

      Bid placement:

Submarine for SZ 91 (with the Cruiser next to Gibraltar) Submarine for SZ 98/99 (with the Egyptian Fleet off the coast of Egypt) Minor Industrial Complex in Egypt Tactical Bomber in Malta Armor in Sudan Transport off the coast of India with the Indian fleet (SZ 39)

You know, you would think with 48 IPC to spend it would be easy to figure out where you want stuff and how you want to set things up, but it’s not. :P

This game is beyond over…. :P

I never claimed otherwise. :P  But I think it will take at least 7 rounds for the Axis to get Moscow.  /shrug.

We can stop if Bold wants too, not sure if he has other games going atm.  If this is it, I don’t mind playing some more just to have something to do.  Roboto refuses to admit surrender in our game, but I think it’s over he’s built a lot of complexes for me to capture on my way to victory…

      Its your turn jenn

I think now that the no subs vs subs combat is not necessary at all.

Explaining: subs are considered a separate group inside the navy.
Allowing subs to attack subs still be as OOB rules.
For example, 2 subs can decide to attack another 3 subs with 2 DDs and 2 TTs in a same sea-zone.
If attacker target subs, then the defender had only to decide whether or not his 3 subs will submerge or combat.
Many will prefer to submerge, so there will be no combat.
If defender choose to fight, then it will be 2 subs@2 vs 3 subs@1, as per OOB rule.
So sometimes, but seldom, subs can sink subs as history reveal.

Yes, and Thomas Jefferson bought enough land to double the size of the United States and paid off the loan within his term, I believe.  Someone purchased Alaska from Russia too, wow was that a good buy!  Gold, Oil, Pollock (fish for fish sticks), and what beautiful views!

I dont either, but they do make mistakes and government mistakes ruin lives.  For instance, you could be telling a joke to someone and end up on the federal no fly list!  Sure, you might get off again, but how long will that take and how much will it cost you?  All because you copied a joke that turned out to have been written by a terrorist…

Chrome has other issues, when you uninstall it, programs like Outlook stop working - or did last time I had Chrome on my computer which was a couple of years and one computer ago. (never installed it on the new one for that reason.)

Okay, so we have 1 vote that upgrade to ie 10 isnt as bad as some of the previous upgrades for ie have been.
