      I’m sorry, your explaination is right, but I just cannot see America going:

      “Oh shoot, Germany’s got 400 tanks in French West Africa, I’ll land in Rio de Oro instead!!”

      So yea, I have to say, most of the neutrals really will never get used.  They’ll be unscratched areas on the board until the day it disintegrates in the hands of an archeologist a billion trillion million years from now.

      Some of the others are awesome!  Tkae Mongolia to avoid Yak.  Take Spain to avoid Sea Wall in Europe.  Take Argentina to invade Brazil.  Take Venezuela to liberate Brazil!  Take Switzerland for….uhm…uhm…ere…uhm…CHOCOLATE!  That’s it!

      This is from page twenty of LHTR pdf file

      Strategic Bombing Raids: a bomber can make an economic attack against an enemy industrial
      complex. During the opening fire step of combat, bombers that survive any antiaircraft
      fire may attack the industrial complex. Roll one die for each surviving bomber. The
      opponent must surrender that many IPCs to the bank. The maximum combined damage inflicted in one turn by all strategic bombing raids on one industrial complex and any rocket attack on the same industrial complex is the territory’s income value.

      Italics mine.

      This from the out of box rules page 28:
      Special Abilities
      Strategic Bombing Raids: A bomber can make an economic attack against an enemy industrial complex.
      During the opening fire step of combat, bombers that survive any antiaircraft fire may attack the industrial complex. Roll one die for each surviving bomber (the maximum each bomber can inflict is the territory’s income value). The opponent must surrender that many IPCs to the bank.
      Weapons Development—Heavy Bombers: If you have the Heavy Bombers development, all your
      bombers roll two dice on an attack instead of one. That means each bomber can score 2 hits in a regular attack, or inflict two dice of IPC loss in a strategic bombing raid. (It still cannot inflict more loss than the territory’s income value.)

      Italics and bold mine.

      If you are playing out of the box SBRs can do some hurt. Not as much hurt in “tourney” rules. Those are the out of box rules pdf from the Avalon Hill website. I think those are the latest LHTRs but it is from the link to the pdf version in the sticky thread. I guess that leaves the question of if in LHTR by turn they mean UK’s move or R thru US moves. My earlier post while not quite wrong is misprecise.

      @ncscswitch:

      5 FIGs not 6.

      Germany starts with 6 FIGs, one of which would be lost in Ukraine.

      Right, but I was pointing out tha they could build a fighter anyway.  So, assuming they planned too, then they would have 6 fighters again instead of 7.

      Again, great minds think alike.

      AARHE have most of your ideas and purposes in our “Defensive Air Support” and “Air Interdiction” respectively.

      In fact, with a second opinion (not me, I have no idea) we’ll change them to more historic names straight away.  :-D

      @ncscswitch:

      @jsp4563:

      The battle board even has a spot on the attaker side for transports with an attack value of Zero.

      And as came up in the Allied fleets on “attack” discussion here and at Harris Game Design, that battle board is more than jsut a playing aid, it is indeed part of the rules themsevles.  So, a zero attack space for TRN’s means that under teh rules, TRNs can attack (they just can’t hit anything)

      Which is BS.  Gosh bless it, if they can shoot down attacking planes, why can’t they ram submarines!  Bah huddlebugs and sassaphrase roots!!!  (I’m just being silly.)

      Fighters are great for Germany.  I think every other round they should be building at least 1 fighter to replenish losses.  However, I do not ascribe to the Germany’s on the defense theater of thought.

      Once you get it in your head you are defensive with your power you are going to loose the battle.  No nation can fight a defensive war against an aggressor and win.  This is why the South invaded the North in the Civil War (they did so too late, IMHO.)  Likewise, the option of 100% infantry is a turtling maneuver that slows you down WAY too much, in AAR. (in classic it’s a different story, you don’t have 3 eastern fronts to defend, only 1.)

      With Germany you have GOT to keep a ratio of 3:1 infantry to armor and at least 5 fighters to defend France.  More would be extremely better!!!

      Go on the offensive IMMEDIATELY.  Keep hammering away.  Leave Fin/Nor and Karelia empty if you have too, but put as many troops on the Muscovite border as humanly possible as fast as humanly possible.  This will force Russia to consider pulling eastern troops away from Japan, meaning Japan doesn’t have to kill htem, just gobble up the land.

      Remember, it’s going to take 3 rounds for America to get that BB to England.  That’s 3 rounds you have to destroy any British forces you can find, so that when that BB does make it, it’s not as protected.  (A few subs will help here.)

      Basically,

      Buy 1 Carrier R1
      Buy 1 Fighter R2
      Buy 1 Sub R3
      Buy 1 Fighter R4
      Buy 1 Sub R5

      etc.

      5 Subs, 1 DD, 1 Trn, 1 CV, 2 Fig is a pretty strong offensive force.  Especially if you can manage to get the BB/Trn from the Med to join it.

      But in order to do that, you have GOT to be grabbing land.

      Ah…part of one of my jobs is to deal with barcodes and get them “in the system.”  Actually, this is not surprising that it works, and is probably used regularly around the world.  I’ve done cashiering, years ago, and it’s a pretty mindless, mind-numbing job.  You end up going on autopilot until something interrupts your momentum: a question, something isn’t in the system (barcode doesn’t ring up), a spill, etc.  This is a little more reasonable to me than the cashiers whom accept photocopied traveler’s checks and $3 bills.

      Nut -  Each item with a barcode has a unique number to it, so that it is identified correctly and the proper amount is charged.  There is a server somewhere that has a database of the barcodes, so when read, it reports back to the cashier station the amount.  These guys photocopied another item’s (legitimate) barcode, and pasted over the calculator barcode, so that when it was scanned, it came up as another item entered as $10.  If they were smart, it was another calculator, but could have been anything.

      If UK and US are idiots, and the Germans and Japs geniuses, the Allies will lose.

      If you attack a country with ground forces, whatever ground forces you attack with are committed.

      For this reason, I like to have three USSR fighters and some artillery.

      Tanks are a must-have; if Germany does massive infantry push, the tanks can rush back east to mess with Japan.

      Basically, I usually build a fighter, LOTS of infantry, and a couple of artillery every so often.

      THe lack of ability of an ally to claim lands diurect from a fallen ally I always took to be “allied support of the resistance”.

      As for income though, with no central government, the taxing ability is gone, and thus so is the income generating capability of those lands… at least until a new adminsitrative authority comes in to restore order (either Allied or Enemy).
