A great place to start, a bad place to stop.

      Imperious LeaderI

SUD: the difference is im not attacking a poster as you do. That post is in a thread called basically “the french suck”. Your rhetoric over Jens gaff was a series of posts over many days. Anything else you took out of context is of no material issue> its totally ubsurb to take a point about a portion of a sentence ( e.g. “you such and such after a period of months”) and can even come up with any possible angle to assume that was the main point when it was only a small part of the sentence. But your the master of pulling things out of context.

You have too many issues that will not allow you to post a thoughtful post because you dont seem to understand that this forum is not gladiator combat with words… Its a pleasant exchange of ideas with others and you have turned things into life and death. This is why you dont belong here IMO. If you continue to behave this way you will have to find another place to do what you do.

CBS News Fires Producer for Plagiarism
      Apr 10 07:24 PM US/Eastern

NEW YORK (AP) - A CBS News producer was fired and the network apologized after a Katie Couric video essay on libraries was found to be plagiarized from The Wall Street Journal.

The essay was removed from the CBS Web site and an editor’s note was posted saying the item should have credited Jeffrey Zaslow of the Journal, the network said Tuesday.

The essays are carried regularly on “Couric & Co.,” the anchor’s blog on the CBS News Web site. Couric and producers meet once a week to decide on topics and the producers write them for Couric to read on camera.

An editor for The Wall Street Journal called CBS News to point out the similarities of the April 4 notebook item to Zaslow’s article, headlined “Of the Places You’ll Go, Is the Library Still One of Them?” The pieces talk about how libraries are seen differently by children from their parents.

“We were horrified,” CBS News spokeswoman Sandra Genelius said. “It was almost verbatim.”

CBS would not identify the producer fired for the transgression.

Yes, Science, Engineering (which is kinda a hybred between science and math in my mind) and Pure Math (as in beyond algebra) are all word problems.

I have a tendancy to poke fun at Engineering students and Engineers because they are so easy to rile up.  But at least they have an honest profession.  They build things and help people - unlike some professions like Lawyers, Judges and Politicians, to name a few.

      @rjclayton:

I think he was talking about trading 2 IPC territories with Japan (Novisibirsk and Kazakh)

Yeah, come to think of it, those are 2 IPC territories.  I wasn’t paying attention.

However, I do not think that Russia TRADES Novo or Kazakh for long.  Japanese forces build up pretty fast; once Novosibirsk falls, I don’t see Russia reclaiming it more than once or perhaps twice.  (My guess is that by the time Novosibirsk falls, one of two will be true; either Russia will still be holding Germany at West Russia, so won’t have enough to counterattack a moderately held Novosibirsk (note that if Russia DID have a lot in Russia instead of West Russia, I don’t think Japan would commit to Novosibirsk).  OR, Russia will be holed up in Moscow, while Japan builds up.

Also, most of what I’ve been writing recently in this thread has been OT.

      Hi Jen,

I agree.  Americans do not need two cars in every garage.  It’s nice.  However, what possible purpose is there in two or more televisions?  Why should you keep up with the Jones’ anyway?  Do we really need to purchase 12 pounds of candy for halloween?  Where can we cut?  How do you budget?  Where do we teach these skills?<<

They need two cars for a number of reasons. Maybe even three cars. If both husband and wife work and they have jobs in different directions, then that right there is a need for two cars. A third car is a back up in case one of the other two fails or needs to spend a day in the shop. Myself and my wife only have one car at present and its 15+ years old. I’m not worried about keeping up with the Jones’. I drive an older car right now because it saves my wife and I an extra $300 a month between car payments and additional insurance and thats an extra $3,600 a year we can invest in our retirement. And we feel investing in our retirement while we are still relatively young is important. Newer cars will late to later. But I drive her to work each day, then work from home 3-4 days a week, and only head up to the shop to do printing and fill orders a couple days a week.

There are just the two of us in our household yet we own 4 tvs. On in the living room, one in the guest bedroom, one in my wife’s office and one in the master bedroom. We watch tv in all of those rooms at one time or another. But then, except for the TV in our living room, the other three are all 19" TVs that we bought on sale between $60 and $100 and we’ll own them for years, so its not like this is a huge expense.

Anyway, my wife puts 12% of her salary directly into her 401K with 6% matched from her employer. We recently set up a 401K plan here at the Guild for the staff and I am currently putting 10% of my salary into my 401K. It just makes sense. The second we have our first kid we’ll begin investing into a tax differred college fund for them to make sure we invest early and smartly into making sure their college tuition is taken care of.

As to the subject of teaching Economics, yes, I think that is VERY important. However, I very much fear the idea of economics being taught to children currently in the American school system. Such a large portion of educators in our country proscribe to a level of liberalism that it worries me and with that comes a completely different take on global economics than is conventional and, well, it just doesn’t match real economics much. If given the choice of having the children indoctrinated into the wrong teachings on economics vs having no teachings, I would prefer none. That way we can at least educate our children ourselves on this very important topic.

      @Jennifer:

As the allies, how do you counter the German 1 build:

3 Transports, 1 Aircraft Carrier, built in SZ 5. (+2 Fgt from the mainland.)

Assume a standard 6 or 7 IPC bid to Africa to close Egypt.  All fighters and bomber not on carriers in WE and the Med fleet in SZ 13 (SS, Trn, BB because odds of the defender getting two hits is almost nil when you attack it heavy with your own BB.)

9 Victory Cities or more: Play more aggressive with Russia to the south.  Have US & UK build a Sub instead of a Transport, or upgrade one to a Destroyer.  I anticipate the difficulties Germany introduced to US and the UK will be offset by the lack of pressure against Russia.

8 Victory Cities: …um… KJF?  shrug  Germany just built a nice bridge from Berlin to Leningrad.  I have doubts that Russia can hold it in the short term.  Perhaps I would protect against Sea Wolf, and try and defend Calcutta.  I don’t know.  Have set up a board and think about it.

      cystic cryptC

I was born at an early age.  I think my sign was “room 224”.  ba-da cha!

I was born March 4/73 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to two loving and caring parents (mother and father for some of you).  I grew up in a Christian home as well, went to church, went to church-camp, and i was on a Christian TV program for 6 years.  I was baptized when i was 16 years old.  I am technically a Christian, and i attend church and give them money from time to time (and i’m a big believer in the Mennonite Central Committee), but i guess that i’m still searching for truth (admittedly, i’m pretty lazy w.r.t. this as i’m quite busy in other respects and tired most of the time).
I graduated (w/ honors), got my B.Sc. in Chemistry (i focussed on advanced organic and biochemistries).  I then did an M.Sc. in Biochemistry and molecular biology and published 6 papers (including my thesis).
I quickly got bored with this life, and looked for something with a little more fun in the job description.  I then became a “territory manager” for a pharmaceutical company.  I did well here (the quarter before i left i got the highest bonus out of around 300 reps) and was in a fast track to a management position.
Still i found the job to be very easy and although i enjoyed it, something was missing.  If i had a bad day, it was because one of my key clients didn’t have enough time for me - not because anything actually BAD had happened.  If i had a good day, it was because my numbers came out and showed me to be growing my business well and both me and my masters were becoming wealthier.
After one of my clients - a physician - banned me from his office for not giving him presents (it was against the rules, even tho’ several companies were doing it anyway) and changed his patients from my product to that of my competitors, i got quite angry.  I figured - fuck him - i’ll go into medicine, and be a better doctor than he is.  The fact is, i was being told from all over that i should go into medicine  I thought that here would be my chance to make a difference in people’s lives, to do something challenging and to be involved in people’s lives at a very real and personal level (i also thought that this would be a handy way to escape work in the salt-mines for when the aliens from Grargrotha IV invade us as they would want someone to keep their slaves happy . . . but i didn’t tell this to the interview board).
So i studied medicine for 4 years, then i did a 2 year family medicine residency with an interest in emergency medicine.  Currently i work in 2 ER’s, 1 urgent care center, and i have my own patients in my private practice.
I love to travel - for 4 years i made it a practice to go somewhere and hang out for a month.  Last year it was Vancouver (i was with my then-g/f and working in the Vancouver General ER) and also Australia (i understand that it was a cold winter that year in winnipeg . . . :)).  The year before i travelled about Cuba for a month.  Before that was Belize.  I also spent around 6 weeks in Portugal with a girl i was dating - long story.  I’ve been to Mexico (several times) Brazil, Barbados, Holland (my uncle was a diplomat there) and Germany as well as all over the US (Phoenix, Boulder, Moab Utah, D.C., Seattle, Minneapolis, ND, SD, Miami, Tampa and Atlanta) as well as from sea to shining sea here in Canada.
I love women - i’ve dated over 50, but i’m down to one right now.  She’s beautiful, brings me supper when i’m working late in the ER, keeps my house clean, and her son does yard work for me (he’s 14, and a good kid).
My political views are mixed - as most people can tell.  Particularly since my father recently secured the nomination for the Liberal party for the riding of Charleswood/St. James/Assiniboia and Headingly (around 80 000 people live here).  If he wins the next federal election, then he will be their Member of Parliament (traditionally a tight race) - http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2306058560&ref=mf
I’m sure there is more, but lately my life has been work-sleep-work-sleep.

      Understanding Marine Corps Customs
      Marine Corps News | March 12, 2007

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. – Have you ever wondered why your Marine stands at attention during the playing of the National Anthem when you are at a sporting event? You might ask why don’t you put your hand over your heart? Or, why are you so stiff? I know I have received those questions. Lots of military customs and courtesies go unknown to a significant portion of this Nation’s population particularly when members of our Corps silently obey those time honored traditions while in civilian clothes. Here is a short list of things you may or may not know:

The National Anthem. When played, the servicemember will stand at attention. If covered while in uniform, the servicemember will salute the National Ensign (our flag). It is also appropriate for the servicemember to turn and face the flag during the playing of the National Anthem. The appropriate civilian action is to place your right hand over your heart and stand still while facing the flag.

Passing of the National Ensign. It is fitting to render proper honors to the Nation’s symbol by standing when the flag passes. You will see this at parades or during a Command Review. For Marines in uniform and covered, rendering a salute is also proper.

The Salute. Its history dates back a long way and there are several versions of why it exists. All theories agree on one thing, it is a courtesy that is offered when two individuals pass, similar to the tipping of a hat to acknowledge the presence of a lady. In the military, the salute is a greeting between an officer and an enlisted member or between a junior officer and senior officer. All services, to include the Coast Guard, recognize saluting procedures. Some services apply different constraints on when a salute is rendered. For example, in the Marine Corps, a member will only salute while wearing a cover. In the Army, saluting in Physical Training clothing is appropriate although no cover exists. For all services, the salute begins with the junior rendering the salute and the senior returning the salute. The appropriate civilian greeting is to simply say good morning ma’am or good evening sir. This is also the appropriate military greeting for Marines when not covered.

Service Songs. Service songs are as historic as the service herself and most military members take great pride in hearing their song played. For Marines, we consider our “Marine’s Hymn” to be a song that tells our lore and for most, it makes us swell up with pride when we hear it. Accordingly, we stand at attention when it is played. We also recognize our service within the Department of the Navy and therefore find it fitting to render the same honor to “Anchors Aweigh”. You will hear both songs played at formal settings such as a Sergeant Major Post and Relief or a Change of Command ceremony. Appropriate civilian action during a service song is to sit and listen with pride. Of course, we’d love to see you stand beside us and know that you too are probably swelling up with pride for the love of your Marine.

I hope this letter has helped you understand just a couple of our Nation’s and our Corps’ customs and courtesies. Semper Fidelis.

(BTW, if you poke around on this site, you’ll see a lot of my issues I raise come from here.  Here, the American Legion, the DAV (Disabled American Veterans), etc.  In case you were wondering where I get the issues I raise and why I never seem to run out of issues to chat about.)

In my version the oil tanker is the only new unit added.  Well, apart from Radar installations and Rocket pieces.

But then one key rule I introduce is that all ships must refuel every turn, tying them to friendly land areas.  With tankers it becomes possible to carry out long range naval operations, but the pieces themselves are expensive and have no combat value.

I’m not convinced that cruisers are anything more than a piece for the sake of having a 3-3 ship, with destroyers becoming 2-2, but we’ll see what LH has come up with in Guadalcanal.  Eventually.

The problem with cost reduction is that you might create naval cannon fodder units bought in vast quantaties just to soak up hits.  A ship costing 4 IPCs and having no combat value would probably be a good buy.
