    • RE: Rockets!

Sounds like a strong way to make rockets more viable and desireable as a technology. I don’t think it’s any stronger then HBs, since you’ll have to get the AA guns built and moved into position to really be detrimental. Meanwhile, HBs really only need to be build, just about everything is in range, if not on T1 then on T2.

if you use 2 armored in the Ukr attack, how do you end up with 17 inf and 3 armored in Karelia?

Any forces that attack a space (except naval and air units) must remain there at the end of the battle.

At best you could have 8 infantry + left overs and 2 fighters in Karelia, about an adequete defense if Germany goes all out against it instead of the fleet with 4 armor, 3 inf, 4 fighters, 1 bomber.

Just a thought here, but if you leave Cauc undefended because you used all the infantry there to take Ukr, what’s to stop the Jerries from moving forces (that would normally get killed eventually anyway) from Afr. to Cauc for the free land, and maybe a defensive hit?

With that they MIGHT be able to take Karelia, retake Ukr (which may or may not be suitably defended pending die roll outcomes) and Cauc giving them a nice +6 IPC income and reducing the red army to tatters?

That’s why I’m a proponent of forming a defense first, then attacking after the UK and US get up to speed.

The problem with an IC in India is that when Japan takes it, they can produce all that much more on the mainland.

Besides, I like to use the Indian forces to reinforce China. Japan has to either attack it, or go around and take that much longer to get to Moscow.

And, should Yakut SSR fall, Russian forces can move to Even and China forces can move to Novo creating a second wall. (Make sure to move US forces first, obviously, so that UK and Russian forces can move before Japan can attack.)

    • RE: How would you change the map?

What about using the Europe Map and the Pacific Map instead of the standard map? They both have extra territories and you could just overlap them where they over lap. (not 100% sure on feasibility of this since I dont own Pacific.)

No point in a 2nd round attack if the UK has 2 fighters, a carrier and a few trannies. All you’ll do is slow them one round at the cost of your air force.

Though, I’ve heard arguements on NOT attacking the brit fleet at all and just going for Russia’s jugular. Kinda hesitent to do that though.

But I don’t think sacrificing my 3 armor units to take out 1 of their armor units is a good trade. Ok, so you’ll get one of their fighters as well, making it that much harder to destroy the UK fleet. I mean, both solutions are equally as bad: save your armor for a rainey day and maybe loose them on defense, or possibly reduce the luftwaffe and one of Rommel’s panzers at the loss of 3 infantry and 3 armor units.

Personally, I don’t do land attacks with russian on R1. On R2 I might, depending on the situation.

How do you avoid the sub submerging?

I could see a German carrier, but only after you have Moscow. Carriers are wonderful ways to protect trannies for use in Operation SeaLion.

      I prefer:

Sub + 2 fighters against baltic

      Non-com:

      Tranny to UK or Canada
(Sub retreat to UK if survives)
      All Moscow to Karelia
All eastern forces to Yakut (7 inf, 1 arm)

I can take Finland later, if Britian doesn’t, and once Britain and USA do D-Day I can invade Europe’s east coast to reduce German forces and add financial strain, until then, I’m building walls of troops.

    • RE: Rockets!

Rocket’s arn’t my favorite technology in the game, but they are basically a free bomber run every turn. 1-6 IPCs won’t sound like much, but if US and UK have rockets (and US brings an AA to UK [we like to use a US control marker under the AA to remind everyone who own’s it]) you are doing 2-12 IPCs + whatever bombers you bring in.

Basically, I’m saying they arn’t totally useless. Though, I’ve played games at times when we changed rockets from 1d6 to 3d6 like a heavy bomber when HBs are discovered as well as rockets and 3 spaces to 5 spaces when LR is discovered as well as rockets.

    • RE: Poll: German First Turn Build

You could keep them until round 2, but you loose the opportunity cost of the tank you don’t build and the extra defensive roll should it get attacked. Especially if you get good intel (ie over hear the allies) saying they’re going for Pac battles or bomber only fights.

With the extra tank you can dump all available units into Karelia first round and have another tank to add after that round. Sure, it leaves Norway open, but the goal is to destroy the Russian army and get moscow out before the UK can build enough bombers to annoy you and before the US can turn around and come back to the Atlantic.

Not to mention, then I have money on my hands too….I like stuff, not money. grin or did you not know that about us girl types?

I like the 9 infantry 1 armor path. It utilizes all your resources (something Germany should really consider doing all the time) replaces a tank you MIGHT loose if Russia attacks Fin/Nor, or Ukr, or E Euro and adds another one if they do not.

Also, an extra tank is just as good in defense as an extra infantry, but gives significantly more umph in an offensive action. (Not to mention it can get to the front faster then infantry.)

      blush

I don’t know any other girls that play, but you can always look! I got interested in it at GenCon in 1994. (To tell the truth, at the time I thought the Aircraft Carriers were the cutest darn pieces. Maybe I’m just a closet “valley girl”?)

Or just find a girl that plays the game and have some quality time you both enjoy…or is that too simple of an answer???

    • RE: Should Japan attack Pearl on first turn?

I like to have my own AC when I play the US. Adds str to any atlantic fleet and comes in handy later when I need to take out Japan. Seeings as round one is most likely the only round the US will see all 36 IPCs, it’s logically the best round to get the carrier. Besides, you can still send both fighters to the UK and get some transports. You arn’t going to be invading W Euro or Finland in the first round anyway, so you have a round to kill. Not to mention, if you just build trannies, the Jerries can send a bomber or two (if they built another one for some reason) to take out all your trannies if you dont have SOME defense of them.

Now, if you are playing with destroyers, we’ve got a different situation on our hands. I’d rather get a destroyer and 3 trannies then a carrier and 2 trannies.

I send two BBs, the AC, the Sub and a fighter. Everything else can and should be used to attack US, UK and USSR Forces in the Asian conflict.

    • RE: Taking Midway Over Hawaii

It’s almost detremental to attack asia with Japan. If you can arrange to have an IC on Manchuria, India and Indo-China you have a nice 9-tank a round supply. Of course, those 3 complexes will probably take you 4-5 turns to get up and running, but it’s enough to destroy Russia, assuming Germany can hold out.

And yes, I’d say getting Hawaii, after you have a base in Alaska, would be a wise investment.

    • RE: Taking Midway Over Hawaii

In order to have a serious attack on the US, Japan would need 20 transports, 40 infantry, 2 AC’s with 4 fighters and at least 2 BBs to attack Alaska. (not to kill the enemy soldier, but to hold it until you can make a round trip to Japan and back.)

You don’t need Hawaii OR Midway. You’ll be building on Japan anyway and it’s 2 spaces from Alaska.

However, your choices were Alaska or Midway. I vote Alaska for the IPC. Not a good staging point because you are 2 turns from Japan to Hawaii to W. US and only 1 Turn from Japan to Alaska.
