RE: New Star Trek TV Series 2017posted in General Discussion
After seeing part 1 and part 2 of Episode 1 - Star Trek: Discovery, I can honestly say I enjoy the graphics a LOT, and part 1 was pretty darn good, but part 2 has me a bit concerned. Over all, I don’t hate it which is saying a lot because I really hated Benjamin Sisko and Deep Space 9. (Sorry, it felt like a bad rip off of Babylon 5 to me, that’s just a personal opinion you don’t have to like or agree with it.)
Though, I would REALLY like to see a follow up to Picard’s Enterprise dealing with the fall of the Romulan Star Empire, and everything else happening…that seems really lacking right now with the umpteenth billionth prequel.

RE: Yes, but what about the original Axis and Allies?posted in Axis & Allies Classic
@P@nther:
Now that we have new active moderators, not sure if this is within their power, …
I am afraid it is not, as we can act inside the given forum structure, but not modify the structure (here rename a (sub-) forum title) itself.
But I am sure djensen will notice your thread in the “Website/Forum Discussion”-sub-forum.Spthththttht to you too. :P
Never knew about the 3rd edition rules. Though I had the CDROM game - it’s where I first learned about the Russian wall on the far east instead of how friends and I played where we just ran away with the Russians.

@Shin:
I agree with Garg’s comment. If you can’t handle dice, don’t play dice. Play low luck or play chess or something.
That said, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with giving up after a terrible start - it should just count as a win for the other player in that situation.
Allowing rerolls of any sort changes the game in ways that are difficult to measure. It would speed things up, but almost certainly to the benefit of the Axis.
I can handle dice and it wouldn’t count as a “win” for me either if it was re-roll or Allies victory on round 9. I didn’t earn it.
On a side note people have mentioned chess as a substitute. I happen to like chess (which side is the Axis in that game?).
Sure you did. Your opponent took a big risk, and lost. Therefore you won. You have to consider the possibility of failure - what then? Say you’re about to assault Moscow, and you’ve got 95% odds. Gotta have a plan for a bad first round! If you don’t have a plan, it’s because your opponent left you no options.
True. Converting from an assault to a strafe can take some wisdom on top of dice calculators (I don’t use calculators - has cost me games, but almost always, unless it’s a huge battle, I don’t use calculators.)
And, as I said, sometimes its fun to lose Paris and have Italy do cleanup. I’ve seen Italy with India and Japan pulling off a VC win. We’re not forgetting the Axis can win in the Pacific too, you don’t have to take London and Moscow to win. Eh?

RE: Is Paris the Only Re-Roll Battle?posted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
Agreed, Gargantua. However, if you were to restart a game, that’s probably the only time to do it without it counting as an official loss in my mind.
Sometimes the better part of valor is knowing when to convert an all out attack into a strafing run.

RE: Is Paris the Only Re-Roll Battle?posted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
Given Paris, France is the first attack of the first round of the game, there’s literally no harm in restarting the game if it goes really badly for one side or the other. Really bad for Germany and there’s a significant reduction in the chance to win; really well for Germany and they could put extra pressure on Russia faster too - though not nearly as bad as if the Germans get creamed.
That said, I’ve played games where Germany does badly in Paris and the Axis still win. It’s more of Italy being a power when this happens because you let the Italians clean up afterwards.
As for Taranto, no. At this point a lot of the first round is done and restarting isn’t really the same game. Russia’s telegraphed, Germany’s telegraphed, Japan’s telegraphed, America’s telegraphed…strategies may need to change to adjust for restarting just because England got unlucky. Honestly, you don’t HAVE to do Taranto either…I’ve seen England use their ships and planes for other things and allowed Italy to get a bit more powerful in hopes the Americans can stop them soon enough. Not saying to not do Taranto, just saying you don’t have to do it. Especially if you want to stop Japan first by securing China, then turning back against the German/Italian armies.

Maybe expanding upward into higher post counts so we can add the newer units added in later games could be fun.

Dang IL, might be a bit salty there about the rat thing that is often mistaken for a dog. :P
CWO - neat comic, like Dilbert. He’s my patron saint of technology I think.
As for “hot or not” probably. P-40s are seksi in their way, I mean they’re not P-51s so they’ll never be really seksi, but they’re seksi.
Thanks for clarifying everything.
Everything? :)
I do not have a P40 tattoo. I have a tattoo of a bald eagle super imposed over the Stars and Stripes on my right shoulder.
Also, I happen to like Catbert a lot, Dogbert is a close second.

RE: Combined arms suggestionposted in House Rules
That makes more sense. Though I’d just pair a fighter or submarine with a battleship (attack) or battleship/carrier (defense) for that ruling. (Assuming the submarine or fighter is being a spotter unit). Just off the cuff response, I didn’t put 4 hours of thought and research into it…

RE: Soviet Armies in the Far Eastposted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
It’s really hard to say. Depending on my opponent, I might have Russia go hard into China early in the game to neuter Japan because I know my opponent doesn’t like to DOW early with Germany - in that case, I am sending armor, fighters and walking the infantry around Mongolia into China to help push the Japanese back. Along with this is usually a British DOW on Japan to add even more reinforcements (idea being a round or two with the Burma road open makes China almost impossible to crush). It only takes a few rounds and from there you have time to run the hard hitters back to Moscow to defend.
If my opponent usually goes hard ground forces in Germany, I might run the SFE troops back ASAP to Moscow in hopes that the extra few D6 on defense can delay the Germans until American and British armies can open a second front.

10 years isn’t enough time.
Heard the show will only be available on CBS’s streaming service which requires a subscription though. IMHO, it needs to be on broadcast TV. But that’s just me.
Still, excited to see a reboot.

RE: G40 Redesign (currently taking suggestions)posted in House Rules
I am happy to help design, write up, and playtest any and all of the changes above, and then some, but I know there was some resistance earlier in the thread to making “radical” changes to the map.
I volunteer to try to put all of the house rules we’ve been discussing on one sheet of A4 printer paper in MS Word / PDF format, but before I do that, I want to know which rules are fair game!
That would greatly help, if we could get a Word and/or PDF version of the changes.

A soldier's silent night - Christmas wishesposted in General Discussion
Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, I wanted to wish everyone here a happy holiday. Â
As I do annually, I also wanted to share a poem which was allegedly written by a U.S. Marine stationed in Okinawa to the melody of Silent Night.
_'Twas the night before Christmas, he lived all alone,
In a one bedroom house made of plaster & stone.
I had come down the chimney with presents to give
And to see just who in this home did live.I looked all about a strange sight I did see,
No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.
No stocking by the fire, just boots filled with sand,
On the wall hung pictures of far distant lands. With medals and badges, awards of all kind
A sober thought came through my mind.
For this house was different, so dark and dreary,
I knew I had found the home of a soldier, once I could see clearly.I heard stories about them, I had to see more
So I walked down the hall and pushed open the door.
And there he lay sleeping silent alone,
Curled up on the floor in his one bedroom home. His face so gentle, his room in such disorder,
Not how I pictured a United States soldier.
Was this the hero of whom I’d just read?
Curled up in his poncho, a floor for his bed?His head was clean shaven, his weathered face tan,
I soon understood this was more than a man.
For I realized the families that I saw that night
Owed their lives to these men who were willing to fight.Soon around the world, the children would play,
And grownups would celebrate on a bright Christmas day.
They all enjoyed freedom each month of the year,
Because of soldiers like this one lying here.I couldn’t help wonder how many lay alone
On a cold Christmas Eve in a land far from home.
Just the very thought brought a tear to my eye,
I dropped to my knees and started to cry.The soldier awakened and I heard a rough voice,
“Santa don’t cry, this life is my choice;
I fight for freedom, I don’t ask for more,
my life is my God, my country, my Corps.”With that he rolled over and drifted off into sleep,
I couldn’t control it, I continued to weep.
I watched him for hours, so silent and still,
I noticed he shivered from the cold night’s chill. So I took off my jacket, the one made of red,
And I covered this Soldier from his toes to his head.
And I put on his T-shirt of gray and black,
With an eagle and an Army patch embroidered on back. And although it barely fit me, I began to swell with pride,
And for a shining moment, I was United States Army deep inside.
I didn’t want to leave him on that cold dark night,
This guardian of honor so willing to fight. Then the soldier rolled over, whispered with a voice so clean and pure,
“Carry on Santa, it’s Christmas Day, all is secure.”
One look at my watch, and I knew he was right,
Merry Christmas my friend, and to all a good night!_ -
