    • RE: Idea for "strict neutrals" rule change

      @techroll42:

      What I was thinking is that there are “spheres” of strict neutrals. If Germany were to attack Sweden, Switzerland, Spain and Portugal might turn Pro-Allied (or even Allied territories…) but Mongolia doesn’t give a damn.

      That is another good idea, but the cost would need to be tweaked.

      That is a really good idea! While I think that there needs to be some penalty for attacking a strict neutral, I have always felt that having all of the neutrals in the game turn against you was a little bit over the top.  I like the “spheres” idea.

    • RE: First turn UK industry buy in Egypt - how do you counter it

      @JimmyHat:

      best counter is an easy Sealion.

      Agreed, if you built a Carrier with Germany on round 1, and the UK either buys units in S Africa or builds an IC somewhere, the Germans need to go all in on Sea Lion.  As Germany, launch your attack on London on G3 and you should win with acceptable losses.  Situations like these are what Sea Lion is all about :)

    • RE: Large Navy for India

      I don’t think that an Indian fleet is feasiable for a couple of reasons.  First, the Japanese naval and air power is so large that a determined Japanese player will crush a UK pacific fleet irregardless how much money you spend on beefing up your naval forces.  If you are worried about Japan attacking Calcutta, then it is best to invest heavly in Infantry and other defensive units… the UK in the Pacific has to hold back the Japanese land forces in Asia once China falls, thus a land unit buy is more favorable.  While you do have the possibility of bringing naval forces from other areas, I would advise against this as you need the UK navy in the Atlantic to put pressure on Germany.

      When it comes to Western India, that territory is actually a part of the UK Pacific faction, so unfortunatley the UK Atlantic side could not buy a factory on that territory.

    • RE: G4 Sea-lion Alpha +3.9

      @Vance:

      Sea lion can “work” (i.e. you take London), about 2/3 of the time even if the Allies have prepared well for it and Germany throws EVERY resource into it, but then Germany loses the game because they did throw EVERY resurce into it.  Pyrrhic vitory, stupid idea.  However, if the allies botch the first round Germany can do a different kind of sea lion very successfully.  It usaully consists of around 8 transports or so; not 13.

      Vance, good points on the Sea Lion… it looks more and more like it is only a GOOD option if the Allies screw up the opening turns.  If you see that a UK player did not go all in on defense on UK1 (or is playing dumb in some way) and Sea Lion is a good option, when do you like to launch it?  G3 w 8 transports?

      @oklahomasailor52:

      using the regular Alpha +3 rules plus the recent “Sea Lion” changes made by Larry and Krieghund this past week.

      Huh?

      There was a recent change to the Alpha 3 ruleset this week that apparently makes an operation Sea Lion (attack on UK) more viable in the early game for Germany.

    • RE: Need help with my Barbarossa

      This is an interesting strategy. I noticed though that the artillery buy on turn 2 wouldn’t be able to get to Moscow until turn 6, so do you just send in your infantry without artillery support?

      As to the other suggestions… I thought Sea Lion was a dead strategy for alpha 3 since Russia can now pounce on you before turn 4 if you take London. Considering my Russian player usually plays super defensive, this might be a really good idea. Does the Alpha 3 Sea Lion involve the 10 transports on turn 2 or is it a little different now?

      No, I think that Sea Lion is back on the table with the new changes made to Alpha 3 as of 2/8/12.  I haven’t gotten to play test the new rules; however, if indeed Sea Lion is viable again, then it may be worth it to threaten a UK with a G1 fleet buy.

      As for the Barbarossa Strategy, attacking on G2 and buying Art (G2), Mech (G3), Tanks (G4), and Start Bombers (G5) works pretty well if you go straight for Moscow.  This is by no means an “unstoppable” strategy, but it has worked well for me (it has probably worked 3 out of 4 times against Russian players of varying skill levels).  Here is a pic from an old game (alhpa 2) where I took the southern route and cracked Moscow.

    • RE: Need help with my Barbarossa

      Creeping Death,

      If you are going for a straight up Barbarossa, this is what I do with the Axis.

      G1 - Do the the Sea Lion buy to force the UK to go defensive
      G2 - Buy all artillery, attack USSR
      G3 - Buy all mech infantry (buy this so that it can catch up with the stack moving towards Moscow)
      G4 - Buy all tanks
      G5 - Buy at least 3 strat bombers

      When you launch the attack on G2, you have to decide which way to go: North (take Leningrad) or to the South (towards Stalingrad).  I persontally perfer going north and hitting Leningrad, as you can use your navy to reinforce the attack.  Once Leningrad is taken, I always buy 3 tanks with their minor factor to help with the stack moving towards Moscow.  The Start Bombers bought on turn 5 can reach Moscow, so go ahead and attack the capital on turn 6.  Barring a massive intervention by the other allies, this strategy almost always allows me to take Moscow.

      A couple more things, if you are doing a Barbarossa attack, it is helpful to have the Italians move as quickly as possible across the Middle east… with Barbarossa, my goal with the Italians is to get to the Caucasus and put southern pressure on Russia.  If you can do this, you force the Russian player to divert forces away from Moscow

      I have used the Japanese to help with the attack as well.  Around J4, if you have pushed through China and controll any of the three territories that border Russia (Sikang, Tsinghai, or Kansu) a strategic bomber can reach Moscow from any of these territories.  With the Alpha 3 rules, I typically don’t attack Russia via Amur as this will not trigger the Mongolians to join the allies; however, if you have crushed the Chinese and are lined up near the Russian border around J3-J4, go ahead and open up an eastern front.

      I hope this helps!

    • RE: Japan's best early options

      @Spendo02:

      Basically it comes down to one of two options:

      Eliminate one of the powers in the Pacific
      -or-
      “Ignore” your map and assist Germany against Moscow

      Thoughts on those two statements:

      Anzac is the least valuable of the powers to eliminate.  It is also the furthest away and exposes your capital the most to the other powers.

      You can’t eliminate the US without removing Washington.  Its pretty unrealistic and by the 4th turn the US economy will push you right out of the US if you manage a foothold if you haven’t gotten them into the war earlier.

      China can be “eliminated” but can also be “ignored”.  This is an important consideration because China can never threaten your capital.

      UK Pacific is the real Gem of the Pacific for Japan.  It gives Japan nearly exclusive control of the DEI, the NO bonus from it plus controlling all of the UK’s provinces that really won’t be lost to Anzac or the US until VERY LATE.  Its a solid 30+ IPC that Japan can maintain for a long time.  Conversely, its also a difficult objective to take and is very obviously seen by the opposing player from the get-go.

      The last choice is to ignore most of the Pacific Map and drive straight for Moscow to assist a German push.  However, this play is a multiple turn play, and isn’t an early Japan play although it is required to be started early.  I’m guessing Japan’s forces won’t threaten Moscow in force until turn 7ish.  Thats a solid 3 plays by the US with full industry running.  Can a Japanese fleet withstand potentially 2 assaults on Tokyo from the US and probably at least 1 each from UK Pacific and Anzac?  Good question.

      My biggest complaint still lies in the lack of utility of major islands that were significant in history (Midway, Wake, Guam, Iwo Jima for example).  There are NO’s for controlling all of them for Japan, but the realistic chance of obtaining that NO is far from relevant.  Further, the US can basically ignore most of the islands because Tokyo is a single turn move from Hawaii leaving the only real purpose of the spaces in the pacific as blocking spaces that only delays the US by a turn or two at best and requires the sacrifice of ships to manage it at all.  The advantages of holding the islands at all is minimal outside of SBR runs from Guam and the Philippines for UK/Anzac to threaten Tokyo.  The Caroline Islands just buy Japan time by holding it and honestly it feels like it lures Japan into a non-aggressive position of indecision.

      Great post and very well written… I totally agree with you!

      When it comes to playing with Japan, on turns 1-3 I like to go with the “India Crush” Strategy… I really think that this is the safest bet with Japan because it gives you the most options.  If you prep for the India Crush in the early game and the UK Pacific player does not adequately prepare for your attack then you have a slam dunk win in the Pacific.  If the UK Player stacks Calcutta and plays China to help defend the India Crush, then you still have your forces in place to attack the Philippines/ DEI on turn 3 (the second best option) or to hit the Chinese hard (third best option).  So even if you cannot take India on turn 3-4, you are still in a great position to expand.

      Of all the strategies with Japan, I have the least experience with attacking Russia.  I played a global game in Alpha 2 where the Japanese player attacked Russia in the early game and then attacked the DEI/ Philippines on turn 3.  Towards the end, he ended up getting wiped out in Asia and Russia was not successfully taken… it seems like the Alpha 3 rules make it even harder to pull off a far east invasion of Russia; however I could be wrong (I have not tried this strategy in Alpha 3).

      @Young:

      In hind sight, do you think the UK should have attacked the Italians fleet in the same manner, or would you attack the Destroyer and Transport with an all out amphibious assault on Libya or Tobruk?. That way, you could get odds and scramble planes from Malta in a defense effort during an Italy 1 attack.

      Yes, I think that moving everything to Malta and then launching an amphibious assault on Torbruk would be the best bet.  I think that you either need to put the UK Alexandria/ Egypt forces on the offensive right away or have them fall back… otherwise, I see them getting destroyed on I2 unless you sacrifice the UK fleet and block SZ 98.

      If you attacked Tobruk, you could pick up the Inf and Art from Egypt, have the mech (in Egypt) move through Alexandria, and have all of the ground forces in Alexandria join the fight, you would have:

      UK:  3 INF, 2 ART, 1 Tank, 1 Tac Bomber, 1 Fighter (if you bring the one from Malta)

      Italy:  3 INF, 1 ART, 1 Mech, 1 Tank
