      I think it’s unsportsman like, but obviously nothing can be done and it’s available to all players, so there isno disparity. I try not to do it. I get tunnel vision when I play, so I don’t even think about it until someone mentions it.

      This would be reinforced by the fact that invariably, the Humans team up with the technologically superior (but warlike) alien race, to defeat the bestial, technologically inferior alien race. Perhaps the supposition is that while we lack the technology and ritual of the higher alien power, they can learn from our cultural mores that arent ENTIRELY based on violence, religion and war.

      Then again, the humans in Starcraft are pretty treacherous and back-stabby, while the Protoss are almost universally portrayed as good guys. Generally, it seems that the humans are flawed, but ultimately the good guys, while the zerg/flood/aliens are universally evil. The protoss/predators/covenant are warlike and zealous, but tend to learn and cooperate in the end.

      Of course, there are plenty of sci-fi franchises that use a dichotomy, or entirely other system of hierarchies, but this particular system has led to some of the more successful franchises. I wonder if anyone knows of any credit being given by the makers of halo and/or starcraft to the producers of alien and the predator movies…whether consciously or not, they were almost certainly influenced

      both of those are rodriguez pictures. from dusk till dawn was written by QT, but directed by Rodriguez, in a very different style from a QT movie. rose mc gowan in grindhouse is in both segments, but her major role is in planet terror, which is rodriguez as well. and thats the one where she is a stripper and gets a gun for a leg.

      Ok, so I had an idea for a thread, well, a series of them really. I figured each of us, or those interested, could create a thread for ourselves where anyone can ask your opinions on anything at all. Give us a sort of road map to what people think about various issues…any issues at all really. So if anyone has any questions about my opinion on ANY topic, post 'em here, and I’ll answer.

      Ill get the ball rolling with some preliminary info…some of you probably know some of this, but I need to start somewhere. also, Im going to give a glib presentation of beliefs in this first post. if you want more info, ask.

      I: do not believe in God, am a follower of no political party, and am pro-choice.

      Hard to say. A large part was that I identified so much with one of the main characters, Larry. Not so much in his appearance, personality, or relationships with people (though one relationship he had in particular I saw as very similar to one of mine), but more in his character, his interests, his motivations, and his mannerisms. I saw a lot of myself in that (and I make that evaluation without considering it either inherently good or bad), so a lot of his experiences and choices in the book resonated with me, and made me consider my own. Additionally, the manner in which much that happened in the book was regarded by the author (who is, incidentally, the narrator), I found very appealing, and agreed with it to a substantial degree. It wasnt even that this led to an outright challenge to my previously held beliefs, just that they offered such a fresh new way of looking at things (from my perspective anyway), that I was struck with how simple and reasonable these opposing ideas seemed.

      Definitely one movie, not two.  Chalk that one up to: greed? overambition? trying to do too much at once?  The style/feeling of the movies are different as well; not necessarily a bad thing, but the second segment felt rushed or unpolished and a major letdown.

      Enough with the cheese as far as dialogue goes.  This is one of my Tarantino peeves - his dialogue is nauseating, or at least has been developing that way.

      I think the major flaw was that it was a parody of low-budget kung-fu flicks on a high-budget.  Maybe not that reason exactly, but something about it just didn’t “feel” right.  A wolf in sheep’s clothing, so to speak.  It’s so hard to pinpoint this, but his emulation of those bad-but-good films just doesn’t amount to a good movie, and I can’t explain why.  A bastardization of some sort…

      The story and premise was laughable - even for a parody - and the ending was disappointing.  I apparently went to the bathroom at the exact time she used the Five Point Exploding Heart technique (or whatever it was called) and felt like I missed nothing.

      Now, knowing Tarantino, there was probably lots of little things that I missed.  I’m sure they’re fun and interesting, but I don’t think it would change my opinion about the movie.

      So, there’s more I’d add to my critique, but let me note some things I did like.  Music is always a good selection from QT.  I liked the animé sequence - from the first movie, I think.  I enjoyed the choreography of the fights from the first movie, but the second was all dirt & grit (more realistic?) and was a harsh contrast to the first - more on it’s lack of continuity.

      Plenty to get this thread rolling.  On a side note, I recommend Lady Snowblood, the main inspiration for this movie.  There’s comedic value, but it’s not intended, and everything else is pure story and action.  A true kung fu flick.  :-D
      It’s also pretty crazy if you are under the right conditions…  :wink:

      Just finished the sequel to God’s Debris, entitled “The Religion War”. And all i can say is !!! i loved it. outstanding. Adams has really posed some interesting questions, in a fascinating and entertaining way. even more interesting, he makes clear that the ideas are not his own (not entirely, at least, they may be partially). what can i say about religion war?
      Religion War:God’s Debris::Kill Bill Vol. 2:Kill Bill Vol. 1. you can read it alone, but i suggest you read both. both are outstanding. and both are pertinent to having an interesting discussion. so i suggest after you read God’s Debris, if you are interested in a discussion about any of the topics, read The Religion War. unfortunately, it is not a free ebook. it will cost you, but not much, and its worth it. i highly reccomend it.

      All morals are relative. Without a framework there is no right or wrong after all. For instance, I believe slavery is a terrible sin. I know however that it was a normal and accepted practise in history. For me to judge people out of context and declare anyone that ever owned a slave as evil would be short sighted. America would not exist IMO, without the contribution of some prominent slave owners for instance.

      Now the interesting question is what should we do about immorality? Which side would you have been on in the civil war for instance? Would you have been willing to die for the rights of other men?  If Jen is around we can revive the ancient argument about the causes of the civil war. :) Would you have fought for civil rights in the 50’s and 60’s? Moral absolutes are few and far between now. We have become a confused people. Who are the good guys? Who are the bad guys? The United States is desperate for a hero. A good guy to follow. We are grasping at straws. We want at our core to be good. To fight evil. Sadly, evil is not as easy to spot anymore. Evil wears a suit. Evil tells us it’s on our side. Evil says what we want to hear. In the end, whats more evil? The man that twists us into evil or us for carrying out evil? For not seeing truth. I suppose it’s just who we are. History both ancient and current affairs are full of decent people committing horrible acts for scum bags. Anyway, of course morals are relative.

      I wouldn’t mind making examples of some of these litigious losers. The problem is that the little old lady who sued Mickey D’s for $10 million got a chunk of change.

      The dumb old broad was driving with the HOT coffee between her legs and had to stop fast.

      Hey!
      Why not sue for lukewarm freedom fries?
      Why not sue for not enough toppings on the pizza?
      Why not sue for…(add your own ideas)

      good CC. i find no validity in the complaints of people against the traffic cameras. the fact is, its absurd. they are breaking the law when speeding, its in a public place, there is no reason not to have the cameras.

      @Janus1:

      it may be a good political decision, but politics should have no place on the battlefield.

      Looks like somebody’s forgetting their von Clausewitz:

      @von:

      War is the continuation of politics, by other means.

      In other words, when diplomacy fails, send in the grunts. :)

      Naturally i wouldn’t be happy.

      I shouldn’t have been speeding I shouldn’t have gotten caught speeding. I really can’t afford a speeding ticket or loss of my merits.
