      Emperor Taiki

I quite like most of your suggestions with a few exceptions

1.) Id prefer a Wespe, or Hummel to the nebelwerfer, but that’s a pretty minor niggle
2.) Panzer II. Id rather we had panzers IV & VI to go with the AA50 V’s
3.) ME262. No other recognizable plane than the Ju87 and the bf109? What about the FW190?
4.) Ju390, prototype only aircraft don’t really fit for me. He111 or Do217 probably better fits.
5.) Il-2 isnt really a fighter, one of the late model Yaks or a mig would probably be a better fit.

      Just my 2 cents

    • RE: May 2009 Balance Poll

      @axis_roll:

      @ithkrall:

we have an agreed balance shift instead of a bid in my group

1 extra UK infantry in Egypt
2 extra Chinese infantry in the areas behind the front
move flying tigers back 1 space so it cant be attacked 1st turn
UK NO requires 4 of canda, egypt etc

      that’s our balance tweaks

1 extra uk infantry in New Zealand.

That’s because we are New Zealanders and didn’t like our home country being undefended :) Has yet to come into play though until the game is basically decided.

Those three UK tweaks can be quite large.  Holding Egypt G1 is huge, possibly enabling a tank and a ftr to escape even if Germany did attack G1.  Adding more NO income enables more UK options, and the 1 extra inf in New Zealand makes an Australia IC more possible (in conjunction with the UK ftr from Egypt that gets to aid the defenses on UK3).  US can support that UK with 2 ftrs a turn quite easily while building a fleet in sz56 as the ftrs built on the existing US carrier can make it 4 spaces to Australia.

Bare in mind we have a gentlemans agreement not to move the NZ infantry out of NZ either

We found that the germans/italians could easily take egypt, everytime, thats why we added in the extra infantry.

The germans were moving a tank/infantry from france and the bomber to support. That would either win, or almost wipe the UK out. Italy would easily win the next exchange.

Now the UK has a 50/50 chance of holding (at least y our play experience)

China was getting wiped out on turn 1 as well, they needed a buff.

Its minor tweaks, but enough to find us seeing the game very balanced for us.

Relooking at your ships and sams, i may go back and repaint the metallics in codex grey on the ships.

I’ll do a demo and see how it looks.

After all, i think the german ships do look better in that regard

Yeah, it was a conscious decision to paint them in that way. No Japanese ship in WWII had big orange waterline markings as far as i’m aware of.

95% of my painting background is in men and tanks, i had never done ships before. So faced with the decision of

a.) Paint them super accurately, but harder to distinguish
      b) paint them like game pieces, less accurate but easy to identify

I went with B, there are pros and cons to both sides. (Most of my friend are not military history freaks like me)

In fact it was yours and sam hills pictures on BGG that inspired me to do the painting in the 1st place, I saw your guys work and went “damm, thats cool, i reckon i should give this a go”. So thanks for the inspiration

For those who haven’t seen Sams job, its pretty good, especially the bases for his aircraft which he hand cast himself.

    • A humble request

      Good day all

I am looking for some assistance with my Operation Paintskrieg, which is the painting and pimping of my AA50

      http://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?topic=13965.0

What I am after is some nice person who owns a set of AA revised who wouldn’t mind parting with a p-38 so I can paint that to be the “flying tigers”

I’m willing to paypal the cost of the postage and a few bucks on top for the model and the persons time. Paying 5-10 US for postage and costs is a lot less than buying a whole set of revised for 1 model.

If anyone can help me out, I would most appreciate it.

Phase Three is complete, and not a moment to soon! Too many damned ships!

Moving on the the UK next, planning on doing the armour and artillery in 8th armour colours. And I need to figure out how to do little union jacks. PS. I will be redoing some of the german and Russian ships with flags as well.

    • RE: What do you think of this mixed LL and dice idea?

My last word on this will be….

I like dice, I like playing with dice because they make satisfying clunky noises when they roll and add tension and drama to the game.

Theres nothing in an LL game that compares to that heroic last russian infantry stand lasting 3 rounds against 3 german tanks and defeating them.

LL seems good for competitive or tournament play, but for me, the fun in AA50 comes from moments like that.

To each their own I suppose on this one.

I don’t think anyone is suggesting that aa50 is an accurate WW2 sim?

I was suggesting that dice add randomness to a game, and that this randomness is akin to the concept of friction as defined by Clausewitz.

LL may reduce the randomness of the game and make it more like chess, but it can also make the game less interesting and more mechanical. Online I can see the appeal of it, doing LL for a game with friends around the table would be annoying to calculate and take a lot of the tactile pleasure of AA50 away. (My friends and I do love rolling dice)

    • RE: What do you think of this mixed LL and dice idea?

To me, dice in Axis and Allies represent the friction and uncertainty of military engagements. (See Clausewitz for some awesome insight into the concept of friction in war)

It can represent heroic actions, poor communication, weather, a daring gambit, or a thousand other things that happen on battlefields that low luck never accounts for.

Live by the dice, die by the dice.

      @Battlingmaxo:

Hitler declared war on the US in the hope that Japan would declare war on Russia and alleviate the some  of the pressure on his Moscow  front. Stalin counterattacked with his siberians on Dec 6.

And you base this on what?

I’ve never come across this theory being seriously put forward by a historian. If you have some basis for this I’ll be real interested in reading through it.

I think the US and Japan will be soundly beaten here.

Especially if the US goes last.

Give the US the 1st turn and you may have a slightly better chance, although I still think they are doomed.

      Falconrider

Yep gonna do the AA guns in a generic grey and most of the IC’s in a redbrick look. However, I plan to paint all the nations starting IC’s thematically and leave them in the individual nation bits boxes.

That overseas company looks ok, and are reasonably priced. My 40k models are of that standard or higher already so I doubt I woudl use them.

      Omega

Give it a go, just be prepared to pay a bit. After all, even painting 670 models to a lowish standard takes a long long time.

      Pan

Don’t know of anyone who sells painted AA models. I know if I was to do another set i would charge a fortune as its very time consuming.

Thanks all for the comments and compliments. Japan will hopefully be done in the next 2-3 weeks and I will post them up once i’ve finished.
