      @miragehunter:

      Thanks for the info. I guess I take things for granted living in the states.

      Heh, at least you didn’t ruin a TV series ending for me  :-D

      Some people forget that stuff screens in the US before it does overseas sometimes. We had to wait 4 months for the end of Battlestar Gallactica. Spent quite some time avoiding forums due to that

      @miragehunter:

      Captain Kiwi, are you familiar with Testors paints?  When I was a kid I use their paints for my plastic models.  I was wondering if that was a good set to use as an economical choice.  Those paints that you were talking about sound expensive.  Thanks again for sharing your lovely art work with us.  Oh by the way I remember seeing someones painted playing somewhere else and they used decals on their big ships.  The AC’s and the BB’s had them I think.  I cant remember where I came across them.  Do you or anyone know where those kind of decals can be obtained?  Thanks

      Sorry my friend but i’ve never heard of testors paints. Any acrylic paint should be fine though.

      As for an economical option, I have no idea. In NZ we have limited amounts of suppliers due to our small market size. I got the only supply of WWII paints i could find. Transfers, again I only used what was in store, or painted them on myself by hand.

      Sorry I cant help more

      Now you just need one of IL’s nice maps to put your painted AAA figures on!

      That would be both epic and cool……

      I will be looking into it  :-D

      Nice job!
      What infantry and bases did you use?

      Ummm?

      The infantry from Axis and allies 50th anniversary edition? It’s just the regular game models painted, nothing more. Oh, and some flock PVA’d to the bases.

      @Subotai:

      @IL, but you do agree that Patton deserved punishment? We do not agree what kind of punishment, or how long etc. ?

      But (imo) it is totally wrong to not punish Generals (if they do something which is clearly wrong or breaking the rules) even how great or good a certain General is, regardless if it is in wartime or not.

      Generals do not make the laws, even if it is during a war, and not during a peacetime.

      But yes, slapping a solider is not a very serious incident, but imo it deserves somekind of punishment.

      I thought he was punished, stood down from command for a while. I may be wrong though

      @Deaths:

      @Adlertag:

      Of course he did, they gave him no other choice. They was in hospital. Soldiers dont belong in hospitals. Real soldiers fight or die. Real soldiers dont say, - Ohh I am sick today, so I cant kill anybody. Now if I was Patton I would have slapped their butts and used my knee on their face too, just as they deserved.

      Very uncool of you to say   :-o :x :cry:

      those troops were wounded in combat, and deserve the best medical attention available.

      I missed that original comment somehow, that’s a pretty repellent statement Aldertag. Your attitude saddens me somewhat, I believe you should take a good look at what is required being a soldier, and the harsh realities of warfare and injury. I know a lot of “Real Soldiers” who would be none too happy about your statement.

    • RE: What do you think of General George S. Patton?

      I rate Patton as one of the best of the western allied Generals of WWII, and probably my number one pick to lead a “blitzkreig” style armoured penetration attack. If you want x distance covered in Y days, I think Patton would be the western general to call.

      That being said I do believe the legend of the man is slightly bigger than his real world accomplishments. Very good general, but a great character and historic icon.

      I think hes almost the opposite of the guy I rate as one of the best allied WWII Generals, William Slim. Slim was an amazing commander and the Burma campaign was battlefield brilliance. However, Slim doesn’t have Legend status and was by most accounts a humble and forthright soldier whose actions are largely forgotten.

      Nice pic, Adlertag.  I love the Graf Zep.  I wonder if she is defending her timber cargo in this Pic?  :roll:

      Just curious as to why you two rate a ship that never saw combat and was never operational as your favorite ship. Not wanting to sound negative, just curious more than anything.

      @Rammstein:

      Very nice work indeed. I’m jealous, if I had the time I’d love to paint all my sculpts.

      More pics would be great. I’d like to see more closeups of the various theaters.

      Just curious, what’s with the Chinese setup?

      Next time i set the game up ill take some more snaps

      As for China, we changed the setup after China got wiped off the board in j1 5 games in a row. Our setup is 1 china infantry per territory, and move the fighter back 1 territory. China also gets 1 infantry per 2 territories controlled rounded up.

      China still gets wiped off the board, but usually not until j3 now.

      We were going to call them FMG COMBAT UNITS…?

      Our new 3D sculptor is working on the final units now.  Once this is done we will move on to prototypes.  I will post pictures of these when they are completed.

      That works!

      And thanks for the update FMG! Can’t wait for you to mail me my set to NZ

      @miragehunter:

      Thank you Captain Kiwi for inspiring us all!  I absolutely love your painted playing pieces.  It adds a whole new element to the game.  I too will make an attempt to do my own operation paintskrieg.  About how long did it take you to do this? Plus one for you this wonderful art work that you have shared with us.

      Funnily enough the timeline is quite trackable by posting dates on this forum. I think i kicked off about 1 March and finished 31 July. I was only painting while I was watching TV in the evenings (Most shows i can paint and listen to and get 90% of whats going on). The easiest thing to do is set short goals. I did each nation one at a time and tried to get a certain amount done each week. Three weeks per nation seems about right, 1 week for infantry, 1 week for air and land units, 1 week for the fleet is how it worked out.

      Several times i thought “Yikes, ive got so much to do still!” and thought i wouldn’t get through it. The key was having something else going on to keep your mind from going mad. I suggest old TV shows you love running in the background. (If NZ Comedy central didn’t play 5 episodes of south park back to back on Saturdays this would never have got done)

      @Imperious:

      its impossible. They just have to leave out the AA bit and they will be fine. They cant use the words Axis and Allies to attempt to tie into the product unless they obtain a licensing agreement. ( which can be done but expensive)

      Many games use similar pieces to Axis and Allies

      “Attack” immediately jumps to mind, as well as “Superpowers”, “Tide of Iron” and “memoir 44”

      As long as they say “WWII pieces” and don’t use the brand name Axis and Allies in order to advertise they should be good. Heck, Superpowers uses the A&A battle board and got away with it. That’s a lot more unique to A&A than WWII models.

      Even marketing it as pieces for custom war games is a good idea.

      arrrg.

      Oh yeah IL, thanks for the idea to base the AA guns on those bolts. You suggested flak towers for AA guns a while back and it got me thinking how i could make the AA guns look more fortified and more identifiable for each nation. Cheers for the inspiration  :-D

      Oh well 5 out of 6.

      I mean that the shark mouths should be under the propellers (spelled right?).
      So they would be on the outside of the 2 propellers.

      Oh i didnt know that :)

      The only flying tiger pick I could find was of a Kittyhawk and it had it on the nose so i painted it there. Ah well, it still looks cool :)

      Good job. Pat yourself on the back  :-)

      Langley - Saratoga - Yorktown - Enterprise - Wasp and Hornet.
      What did I win?

      4 of them sunk during WWII.
      All of them ready for the outbreak of WWII.

      Shouldn´t the shark mouth be under the red dots?

      Close but not 100% Lexington instead of Langly, the others are correct. I have this massive 1000 page book of most of the machinery of WWII and the pictures of the US carriers show that some of them had the CV nmber on the deck. I had some transfers lying around and thought it would be a nice touch.

      Not too sure what you mean about the red dot?

      The beast has been slain! I am essentially finished with this project! Pretty awesome sense of achievement to get it done. Im planning on going back and doing a few touch ups over the next week or two (Flags for the German and Russian carriers and battleships for example), but for all purposes my AA50 set is fully painted!

      No full shots of everything set up yet, will do those over the next few days. Here are the last models painted

      US Infantry

      US Capital Ships

      Ok history buffs, name the carriers :)

      US Support Ships

      China

      You can’t quite see it too well in this pic but the P38 has a tiger mouth :)

      http://s458.photobucket.com/albums/qq305/ithkrall/AA50/?action=view¤t=China.jpg

      Industrial Centres

      Went really simple here, not too exciting

      AA guns

      Made the AA gun stands out of a bolt and miliput. Gun fastened to top of bolt by blutac so it can be removed

      I agree with much of the sentiment about the AA42 pieces, very yawn.

      As i have nearly finished painting my aa50 set I will be eagerly awaiting the FMG pieces. Until then I am thinking of pimping out a few more of my board games as the experience of paiting aa50 has been so much fun. Looks like my Battlestar Gallactica is going to be done next…… or perhaps i may get a copy of War of the Ring.

      So FMG, get those pieces rolling!
