      @RJL518:

      US Admiral Marc A. Mitcher…commander of the fast carrier task forces during the final battles of the Pacific War…his carriers seemed to be always in position to deal smashing blows to the Japanese Navy…and it was his task force that sent the Japanese superbattleship YAMATO to it’s final resting place at the bottom of the East China Sea…

      I dont know if i would agree with this. After all Mitcher always operated with massive logistic, numerical and technological superiority to his opposition in the final stages of the war. I would consider him very competent but not great by any means.

      Just my 2 cents

      General William Slim

      One of the best and most sucessful allied generals of WWII, but Burma was a secondary front so he didn’t get much press

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Slim,_1st_Viscount_Slim

      Stillwell and Kesselring are pretty good nominees as well though

      @Captain:

      The recreation of Poland as a state was welcomed by the people living there, and they fought pretty darned hard against the German occupation.

      I dont want to be negative, and are just curious more than anything, butt since you are a history teacher from New Zealand, did the Maori’s fight hard against the British occupation, or did they welcome the brits as liberators ? And how about the Aborigins in Australia, or the Zulu’s in South Africa, or the Indians in North America, or the black slaves from Africa that was sailed on british ships to their new home in U$A’s cotton fields and mines. Did all this natives fight against British exploitement, or did they recognize the brits as great liberators ? As I said, just curious. And I wont pull the string and ask if the Polish was happy to be liberated by allies in 1945. My country too was liberated by the Red Army, so of course we all are very greatful to comrade Stalin, our belowed hero.

      Ok?

      What point are you trying to make here?

      Race Relations in New Zealand, the Treaty of Waitangi, the Kingitangi movement, Musket Wars and New Zealand wars are very complex issues. Some Maori did fight against the Europeans, but NZ was never invaded as such. It was brought into the empire with a treaty that recognized the unique status of Maori as native peoples. There have been really bad moments in NZ’s history, but work is being done to redress some of the grievances the Tangita whenua have endured in an effort to restore things that were illegally seized from Iwi in NZ. Becuase the government here recognizes the Treaty of Waitangi, Maori goups (Iwi) have legal grounds to make claims against actions that went on.

      NZ is not perfect, but i fail to see what this has to do with the invasion of Poland.

      Comparing those other colonial incidents above to NZ history is misguided, comparing them to the invasion of Poland is just sad.

      We also know what happens when America enters wars without being attacked first…they wimp out and go home. Honestly losing the air war would have been devestating to the allies.

      evidence?  if you say vietnam i’m going to give you a long post for a history lesson.

      I really want to see the long post of this, not that i have a strong opinion but i really want to see your logic and justification laid out. Vietnam certainly doesn’t look like a victory at first glance.

      @gamerman01:

      Also, that the leader of Germany said “we” when referring to German aggression starting the war.

      That is correct. German aggression startet the war with Poland, when they attacked Polish occupied former german soil that was illegitimated taken during Versailes Treaty. Butt it was Britain that turned this small local conflict into a world war, just the same way as they did in 1914. Of course Britain could have started the world war in 1936, when the spanish republicians won a legal election and made Spain a democracy, butt it was not neccesary since Franco won an easy victory. Germany was stronger, so Britain had to gather the rest of the world to put her down.

      Wow dude, Polish occupied German Soil? I think most Poles would agree with me that Poland was the legitimate owner of that territory. The recreation of Poland as a state was welcomed by the people living there, and they fought pretty darned hard against the German occupation. No country in WWII had a higher loss of life per capita than Poland as well. Your “small local conflict” became a war of extermination in Poland. I for one are glad the UK finally came to support it’s allies, and it should have done so earlier before Czechoslovakia was occupied

      Italian units would make a nice Christmas gift, Don’t you think?

      I wish!  I don’t think everyone understands how EPIC a project like this is…  how expensive and how much time it takes.

      We are moving as fast as we can.  They will be out 2010 100%

      I can empathize with you man, Projects slipping to the right is just a natural part of business. Usually people underestimate the work required during the planning stage, key people are away, or certain supplies can’t deliver on time etc etc.

      It’s just part and parcel of business and business planning. I do commend you on fronting up here and informing your customer base of the delays though, good man.

      Hi Captain!,

      I thought of a new idea for you.  You seem like the adventuresome type.  Because you inspired me.  I came up with the idea of board modding.  I thought that it would be cool to implement an small smoke generator underneath the board.  like the ones used in small model trains.  Then use a piping system throughout the board to the typical locations of IC’s underneath the board.  And wala! you have interactive IC’s!  Nothing like seeing smoke coming out your IC!  Now it looks like your IC is actually doing something.  Pretty darned cool if I say so myself.  I vow to try it someday.  Along with the operation paint party!  Also the implementation of led’s would be pretty cool too!

      An epic idea, but probably beyond my abilities. But you sir, you have a brain made for crazy ideas.

      My hat off to you

      @ABWorsham:

      Humanity has found war as an excuse for a long list of horrible acts.

      Truer words have never been spoken.

      I don’t think any nation, culture or people has 100% clean hands.

      It’s one of the reasons I really enjoyed teaching Military Ethics at University. The conundrum of being in an environment where killing people is acceptable yet there are restrictions in fascinating.

      War is Hell.

      While I agree with the sentiment offered up By General Sherman, the annoying thing about that phrase is its often used as a counter to war crimes by people.

      “But we killed 1000 civilians in that air raid!”

      @Rammstein:

      Hi

      I love the finished product you have created. It’s inspiring.

      Could you please post more pics of the fully set up board, closeups and the 42 setup would be great.

      What did you use to prop up your planes? Could you explain the process you used.

      Thanks

      I’ll take some pics next time i setup to play.

      we don’t play the 1942 scenario, but if im bored one day I may set it up just to have a look.

      As for the plane bases, they are made from a small washer for the base, miliput resin formed into a blob on the base. A thin bit of metal wire is then plunged into the base before it dries. drill a hole in the bottom of the plane with a modeling drill and super glue the plane onto the wire. Trim the bottom of the washer with a knife to remove all the miliput that has pushed through so that it stands flat. It’s a pretty easy process, just takes about 3-4 hours for the miliput to dry. Oh yeah, glue the plane on once the miliput has dried. then paint the national base colour.

      Most of the stuff do do that can be easily obtained from a modeling store. Washers, Drill, Metal wire the size of the drill, Miliput or other modeling resin and a craft knife.

      I hope that helps.

      @Jermofoot:

      Do I recall correctly Anzac troops were present in the defense of Singapore from the Japanese?  I know the Brits were there and recall the Japanese wading across the swamps and waters to surprise the defenders…

      I don’t know in all honesty. I believe at the time Singapore fell the vast majority of the NZ fighting force was in North Africa attached to the 8th army. We had been in charge of the defence of Crete earlier and had relocated from their to Egypt.

      The Singapore alliance with NZ goes back to the Five Power Defence Arrangement (FPDA) which allied the UK, Australia, NZ, Malaysia and Singapore in the early period of the cold war, to act as a south east asian alliance against possible communist expansion. It’s one of the reasons NZ assisted in the Malayan and Vietnam insurgencies.

      To answer the question on my avatar: I feel no reason to justify my having it.  Again, I must ask why I’m questioned for it when others seem free to have any randome thing they desire.  However, since you name is Captain Kiwi, I suppose it would fit you more…

      Nice gun, btw…

      Was just curious about the avatar more than anything as I work with the RNZAF as part of my role at New Zealand Defence HQ, got flown around in a 3 squadron helicopter a couple a months ago and it was awesome fun. However, I probably should have sent a pm and not put it in a post along with other things.

      And the gun is a Singaporean 155mm self propelled artillery piece. As part of my job I was invited to a VIP day at the New Zealand army firing range where the Singaporean army were test firing their artillery. Good times. (Singapore is a long time ally of NZ and they don’t have the space to test fire at home, so we hire out our training grounds to them)

      Oh and IL, trolling is not normally a personal attack on someone. Its usually saying somethign that is deliberately inflammatory to get a response. Like going on a pro choice forum and calling everyone who had an abortion a baby killer (Thats an extreme example, but you get the point). Godwinning is usually considered trolling.

      Wait? who is he trolling? I mean really he is trolling because he does not like FDR? HUH?

      He only mentioned me and a troll must have somebody who is a target and poster on this site. Do you mean he is trolling a guy who was president 65 years ago?

      Am i missing something?

      Ok i read it again. and perhaps he did make a jab at you. I will edit.

      Wait what am i to edit. He quoted you right?

      Confused.

      I think he means comparing FDR to Hitler is trolling, which, lets face it it is. I don’t think hes digging at you IL, its upside down turtle that’s being the troll. FDR wasn’t a saint by any means, but compared to Hitler he is. I think the part where he says that FDR can commit the same atrocities as Hitler is where it really becomes trolling hyberbole.

      This whole thread has me down on this community a bit, some pretty ghastly statements being made in here people. Not cool

      Also, upside down turtle, any reason you have the RNZAF kiwi as your avatar?
