    • How do you break through the Danish Strait as Allies?

      I’ve only played 5 games of Global 40, but I’ve yet to see the Allies even come close to breaking through the Danish strait.  Germany always decimates the British navy on Turn 1, and by the time the British can rebuild it (if they even can), Germany has the opportunity to stack enough Infantry and AAA guns to make taking Denmark a fool’s errand - at least for Britain alone.  Even if the U.S. brings a flotilla of carriers and transports over, Germany still has enough time to stack it such that taking it is far more trouble than it’s worth and at relatively little cost to Germany.

      And even if you did get lucky and take it, you’d likely have too few men to hold it for a turn so you could use the straight.  I guess if the U.S. reinforces you, you might could hold it a turn, but it seems that if the U.S. has that much presence in the area, then A) Germany will see it coming and be prepared, and B) the U.S. is is probably having to yield the Pacific to Japan in order to threaten Germany with enough force.

      All this is to say that the Allies seem to have little to no hope of entering the Baltic unless Germany is careless.  It sure seems to make attacking Germany’s north-west front almost impossible.  I don’t know why I find that so surprising, but I do.  It just seems… wrong(?) to allow a single territory to deny access to an entire region to their opponents so effectively with so little cost.

      Has anyone else found this frustrating/baffling?  Am I missing something?  Is there an easy way to circumvent/take the strait that I’m not seeing?

    • Can submarines use a narrow strait if they don’t own it?

      Can a submarine pass through a narrow strait if they don’t own it and there are no enemy ships on either side of it?  For example, can a Soviet submarine pass through the narrow strait between Denmark and Norway prior to Turn 4 if they are not at war with Germany?  What if there are no German ships at all on either side of the straight?  Does that matter at all?

      My strict reading of the rules leads me to believe that it’s only possible if Germany allows it (which of course they have no incentive to do).

    • Can Soviet Union attack Finland (a pro-axis neutral) prior to Turn 4?

      In the Global rules, under the Soviet Union Political Situation section it says, “The Soviet Union may not declare war on any European Axis power before turn 4…”.  I would interpret this to mean that they can attack Finland if Germany is careless enough to not activate it on Turn 1.  Agree/Disagree?

    • RE: Does a Rules Differences Summary exist?

      @Bob77:

      There are no differences in the rules themselves.
      The only differences are in the wording…to provide better clarity and understanding of the rules.

      This is a joke, right?

    • Does a Rules Differences Summary exist?

      I have been playing Global 1940 a lot recently and recently purchased the new Anniversary Edition.  Is there a document on the website (or any other website) that summarizes the differences between the different versions of the “main” A&A game?  I’d love to NOT have to scour the entire new rule book just looking for the differences.

      Thanks in advance!

    • Anniversary Edition purchased in Florida today!

      Pre-ordered from my FLGS last week.  Happened to be in the store this morning when some deliveries arrived.  I told the owner of my pre-order and asked if there was a chance it might have come a day early.  Lucky me - it had!

      The box is HUGE!  It dwarfs the Pacific and Europe 1940 boxes.  Can’t wait to play!

    • Are the War at Sea minis a good size for use with the Global maps?

      I’d love to pimp my game with some of the painted War at Sea minis if they’re not too big for the Global 1940 map.  Anyone tried using them before?

      @Young:

      @IronWill:

      Thanks for making these reality YG.  You mentioned that you have a reason behind your color choices.  Do you mind me asking, out of curiosity, what that reasoning is?

      My reasons would sound very superficial to many people, but I can say that they involve information recognition, and subliminal association (if any of that helps).

      No, subliminal/intuitive association makes perfect sense to me.  The colors of the IWNGU dice were very intuitive to me.  The color scheme seems like a “heat (hit) index” - White (1), Yellow (2), Orange (3), Red (4).  The “hotter” the dice, the more hits it should make.

      So, I can’t see the images in the original post.  All I see are Photobucket meter images.  Apparently the download limit or bandwidth limit or something has been exceeded?  Or some other problem?  Anyone have an idea what the problem is?

      I’m curious as to what the Larry Harris quote is in one of the images.  Can someone share the quote?

    • Mulligans - love ‘em or hate ‘em?

      We’ve all been there, right?  You kick German butt with Russia on the western front and wrap-up your turn with a smug smile on your face (“Take THAT Nazi scum!”)… only to notice as Japan is deciding on their purchases that you forgot to make a non-combat move on your Japanese front.  You intended to do it.  You’d planned on doing it, but you got so wrapped-up in your gloating over Germany that it slipped your mind.

      “Uh, hey Bob?”
      “Yeah?”
      “I forgot to move these 3 infantry over here in my non-combat phase.  I fully intended to do it, I just forgot.  Do you mind if I move them?  I mean, you haven’t really started your turn yet.”

      Pretty innocent scenario with what most of us would consider an easy answer - “Sure, go ahead.”  But what if the move was more crucial?  What if it prevented you from taking a new territory?  What if it wasn’t a non-combat move?  At what point does the answer become NOT so easy?

      I play 99% of my games 1-on-1 against my best friend.  We’re pretty lenient with each other.  So lenient that we allow each other to walk-back disastrous attacks that were announced without noticing overwhelming enemy odds or with ignorance of some obscure rule that would result in an overwhelming loss.  More than once, we’ve both uttered the phrase “Well I wouldn’t have done THIS if I’d known/seen THAT.  C’MON!”

      I get that in tournament games or online games against strangers, you have to have a hard and fast no-mulligans rule to avoid anarchy.  But how do you handle it when it’s just you and your close friends?  Do you tense up with excitement as you see your opponent about to make a costly oversight, smugly pointing it out to him after it’s too late?  Or are you forgiving and lenient?

      I’m the latter.  Not that I’m above some smug gloating - ask my buddy.  I guess I just want to win because I’m the superior strategist, not because my opponent is ignorant of the rules or made a simple oversight.  How about you?

      The fuel gauge roundel do sound neat.  I’ve also got the 2004 Revised edition markers.  They just don’t have enough to mark all plane groups in all combats at once.

      I like my new chips even better because of how they’ll stack with the unit chips.  Plus the yellow provide high visibility.

    • The low income rates make luck a much bigger factor in this version

      Played my first game of 1941 the other day 1-v-1 with my experienced play partner.  We’ve played lots of Revised and several games of Global 40.  In this first game of 1941, I played Allies vs his Axis.

      I admit I think I made a mistake attacking wth Russia in turn 1, period.  However, to top it off, I got diced and lost 3 units in that combat when I should’ve lost 1.  Then on Japan’s first attack, they attacked Pearl Harbor and I got diced again.  They lost 0 units when they should’ve lost at least 1-2.

      Now, I’m not one to cry about getting diced.  I understand probability (math major), and I don’t use it as a crutch to excuse poor strategy.  However, it highlighted what I think is a critical flaw in this game - getting diced in this version is much more debilitating than in other version due to the low income rates.  It’s twice as hard to recover units lost to bad dice.  And it’s so much harder to recover territory lost to the enemy when you’re down even 1-2 units against the enemy.

      I found myself having to take unusual risks hoping that the dice would swing back in my favor and even the odds because I simply didn’t have the income and the time to let the game balance itself.

      I’ve read other posts where players have complained about the low income rates being less fun because you have fewer units to play with, but my observation is that it seems to make the game less about strategy and more about who’s the luckiest with the dice.

      Thoughts?

    • Solution for tracking remaining air unit movement after combat

      Tracking remaining movement points for air units is always challenging for my group. We do our best to remember and we usually do fine, but sometimes we forget and spend precious time trying to remember where every plane came from to calculate its remaining movement. So I got to thinking - why does this have to be so hard?  What can I do to solve this problem? So I ordered some yellow chips from HBG and made some numbered stickers to put on them.

      This way, we can just slip a chip under each plane or stack of planes that marks how many movement it has left after combat. We’re used to working with chips under units, so it’s pretty intuitive. They can stack right on top of the grey/red chips or slip right under a plane unit.

      I tried posting an image, but the forum won’t let me post links for some reason.

      What do you guys think? What methods do you use to track remaining aircraft movement?
