    • RE: Another dimension - Defender Retreats

I think if you did wish to have such a rule, the simplest way to have it work is at the beginning of any follow up combat round, any defending unit may forgo any attacks and elect to retreat; they will still suffer attacks and casualties for that final round. During non-combat they then move to an adjacent friendly territory, if there are none, they are eliminated.

This makes it so that retreating isn’t free; there has to be some downside to it.

    • RE: Does the Global War 1936-1945 board game (third edition) actually exist? How can I buy one?

Unlike traditional board games, GW36 doesnt come as a self contained set. It comes with just the map, and then you have to assemble the playing pieces yourself, which is recommended by cannibalizing Global40 and building the new GW36 units buy makeing further purchases from HBG, Iwillnevergrowup, shapeways etc.

Here is a link to their “top level” of global war 36: https://www.historicalboardgaming.com/Global-War-1936v3_c_1293.html

Have you looked at any youtube guides on how to build the game, they explain it better than i do.

    • RE: Airbase needed for interception? V3

I think the rule should be interpreted as, fighters can always scramble to their territory they are in, but need an undamaged airbase to scramble to adjacent territories.

      @vondox said in Tech problems:

@aldrahill Yes, our german player was very lucky in our last game

There is lucky and there is a player getting 52/54 rolls which has a chance of 00.0000000000082% occurring.

You guys were probably doing something wrong, and if you weren’t, you shouldn’t be trying to balance it around an exceptional set of luck.

There is nothing in the rules that state you are allowed to switch to a new tech line

The part of the rulebook that says “For each tech roll, select a tech and roll…” (paraphrasing) lack of conditions regarding switching, says you are allowed to switch.

    • RE: Airborne and fortifications?

@linkler Yeah, it gives the airborne the option to avoid the fort if the transport has long enough range, which makes sense and is good for gameplay.

    • RE: Carriers vs Islands in Pacific?

@hms-serapis If you are island hoping, you cant defend your fleet with aircraft.

Also I do not see how you are able to attack islands with aircraft without carriers to land on. An aircraft from Hawaii, could not reach any islands japan may take (save one)

    • RE: German Possesses Iraq? Never gonna happen right?

While we are on the subject, the rule book state that if there is a german or italian unit in an adj. zone, iraq joins at the end of turn.

I image this is supposed to be interpreted as if there is a german/italian unit present at end of turn? Like Germany cant land a unit in a contested zone, and then say “well i have a unit adjacent, they now align”

      Faq’d

Q: Are you able to buy units, and keep them in reserve on the “Place Units” box of the production chart, to be placed in later turns?

A: No, you must place them in the same turn if you’re able to.

@theveteran Yes, because the Spanish Civil War exists at the start of the game.

Is that the table that also says that they arnt controlled in the 1939 setup?

    • RE: The FAQ Thread

      @plasticknight

in this case what are those other ships actually attacking besides what’s for all purposes an empty SZ since they cannot engage those subs?

I assume they are there detering the other aircraft from scrambling.

Can ships attack what is effectively an empty SZ?

Yes, because the defender can always decide to not submerge his sub and fight as normal.

So in this case they could seemingly choose to scramble either against the MAP attack or the naval blockade, but not both?

A blockade isnt a battle, despite it being a combat move. Plus the aircraft need a defending unit to scramble to which establishing a blockade does not have by definition.

And my apologies guys if I come across argumentative, just mentally torn on what the rules allow here

      None Needed!

Any time a sub ends a turn next to a zone with an aircraft, its in danger; thats part of the whole game within a game that is submarine hunting.

    • RE: Non combat after naval blockade

In section 8.2 it lists blockading as an example of combat movement. 8.11 sort of contradicts this.

I would say in order to enforce a blockade the units need to combat move, and thus couldn’t non combat.

    • RE: How is the balance in Global War 1936 Version 3

@Chris_Henry said in How is the balance in Global War 1936 Version 3:

I’m seeing posts about only being able to build a few units in India. Well, don’t forget the US can Lend Lease a unit to the FEC every turn. Utilize this if you need to.

I think this touches on a great point. While yes FEC only starts with one factory, you can really squeeze a lot of production out of them, on top of lend lease. For example in v3 you can as FEC build:

      • One unit from a factory
      • One militia per IIP value
      • One Colonial Infantry per land zone with an IPP
      • One Infantry upgraded from a militia.
      • Two Gurkhas (a very good unit for 4 IPP)

As you can see, IPP permitting, you’ll have plenty of things to build.

And when it comes to lend lease, sometimes you have to be a bit crafty with it. UK wants to send some units to FEC, well they cant lend lease them, but they can give money to France who can then lend lease to FEC. Or as USA, you want to rush some aid to FEC? Send them a plane and send the USSR a plane on the condition they send an equal to or lesser value plane to FEC.

Regarding balance, from my limited experience it seems about fair, but there are always room for tweaking it either by the balance team or home rules to make it more fair. For example, if you feel some tech is OP, put a house rule that says add +1 to your rolls for each other nation who has completed that tech or something like that.

    • RE: Advance Submarines

Only attacking (IE shooting at) submarines with Aircraft on Maritime Air Patrol (MAP) are affected by the advanced submarines improvement. Normally you can attack a submarine with a MAP aircraft paired with a destroyer, but a adv. sub. can only be attacked with the MAP aircraft.

Defending against an advanced submarine is unaffected. Escorting Ships and Aircraft on MAP are unaffected and act as normal.

    • RE: Battlecruisers

I think their purpose is that for $2 more than a HC and $6 cheaper that a Battleship, they are almost as strong as a BB and have 1 more attack /defense and 50% more bombardment strength (3 vs 2) compared to a Heavy Cruiser.

I think they might be a good option for when you only have a minor shipyard (like Anzac) too.
