you can also send an additional fighter from london due to the carrier’s presence.  still pretty tight odds, but it is still beneficial even if you don’t sink the trannie.

and if you induce sealion, russia gets huge

and def soak hits with ur AC

    • RE: Fighting off Barbarossa from Moscow…

i think the real question is “what does UK do to turn the tide against barbarossa?”
with german resources tied up in the east, UK should shut down Italy, secure egypt, and provide moscow with air/mechanized units. another thing is getting bonus income for russia from iraq, and possibly ethiopia/italian somaliland (this trick is a bit underhanded but hey).

knp, i know in another thread you said you didn’t like the taranto raid, but have you tried it much?

granted i pull an extra fighter off london as well as the bomber, which might leave you a bit open to sealion, but that takes tremondous pressure off russia.

the damage you deal to italy allows you to support the ruskies with much needed hardware for the defense of moscow

i’d say try taranto in conjunction with an egypt lockdown, get as much other there as possible basically

i think garg put it best:

russia NEEDS germany to attack it, not the other way around

that said, the threat of countering goes a long way

logistically, mainly inf/art is the way to go, with the occasional mech/tank or aircraft

and ALWAYS quintuple-check any counter/strafe you consider as russia.  you need pretty good odds cuz if things go even a little south, it’ll bite you in the arse.

    • ITALY IS SCREWED!

so sz97 is becoming pretty standard.  in conjunction with continued allied presence in the med, the mid east and africa are just dreams for italia.

so if you can’t expand south, then what DO you do?

build dudes? can open in the east? and defend western europe?

      seems kinda lame…

    • RE: Fav country in g40 now that its out

      Russia all the way
the bear in the east! haha

doesn’t always happen, but nothing more satisfying then watching the Red army stunt the nazi offensive

Russian play also seems the most intuitive of the allies, just gear up for a dirty land war and hold and push back when you can

the lack of action is kinda cool, cuz when the action starts, its usually huge well-developed stacks clashing in gargantuan conflicts for the life or death of the Motherland!

      ahem……sry

    • RE: Russian income trick.

      @Alsch91:

Fighters in Rome can scramble into SZ 95 even if only Sicily - or any other territory - is being invaded.
Scrambling can force combat in any neighboring sea zone where combat is possible.
As another example, fighters in gibraltar can scramble against an invasion on Morocco.  Same deal.

Also, yes, a single enemy submarine would stop a transport-only amphibious assault as well.

oops just looked it up mine was an alpha 2 thing

    • RE: Russian income trick.

this is backtracking in the thread a bit but…

in regards to russia taking sicily and the like:

my understanding is that if the SZ was friendly (no axis surface warships), then the italians could NOT scramble unless the amphib was targeted at the AIRBASE tt, in this case Rome.  No combat in the SZ and no amphib at the AB tt = no italian scramble

tho an OFFICIAL ruling would be nice…

and a lone italian sub would stop it, even with other allied surface presence?

    • RE: DEI Question

slightly off topic perhaps but related…

if euroaxis attack greece for example (or any other pro-allied neutral) but do NOT take it and there are still friendly neutral inf left over, can allied powers at war land air there even though greece is still “neutral”

i think i remember hearing about this and thought i’d ask

    • RE: G1 Attack on Russia?

      about the norway AB…

slapping an AB there only helps the allies.  when america shows up and takes it from you, the UK flies over scramble cover for the fleet and you just lost all chance of disrupting a europe shuck (and a particularly nasty one at that IMO)

i think norway is too hard to defend long term to be the answer to an immediate issue (russian incursion in scandinavia)

    • RE: G1 Attack on Russia?

      @Vance:

I looked into this more closely and I am starting to like Grasshopper’s idea a lot.  They way I would do it is to send the tanks from Poland and South Germany to East Poland and hit z111 instead of z110 to free up air units for France.  The 4 mechs from West Germany will NCM to Hungary and Italy takes South France.  Normandy stays French so allies can’t use the IC later.

Even if dice are unfavorable, Baltic states and Bessarabia are being attacked by the same number of infantry as they have (plus 1 fig, 1 tac each) so even if they all hit the planes are safe.  The goal is to kill the Russian infantry so it’s OK if Bal and Bes are cleared but not taken.  If the Yugo strafe goes bad (ie you lose a lot or you actually win and get stuck there) you have the mechs in Hungary as reserve.  The tank from Romania goes to Yugo (and back), the tank from Hungary activates Bulgaria.  France gets 7 inf, 3 art, 3 armor, 3 tac, 1 bomber. z111 gets a sub, a battleship, 3 fig, 1 bomber.  z125 gets a sub to deny Russia the Murmansk NO for the first turn.  I would build a sub, destroyer, 1 mech, 2 armor.  So that’s my take on it.

leaving 110 alone seems like a great way to shoot italy in the foot.  that UK fleet left alive can slip into the med, causing some real headaches for the axis early on, plus leaving a sub off norway to deny the russian objective is only good if you’ve taken out the DDs is 109 and 111 (6ipc unit to deny a 5ipc NO for 1 turn only: BAD) seems like there are too many bases to cover than germany can handle for a g1 russia.  harassing uk and getting italy setup seem like better uses of g1 moves

that being said, i am intrigued by the idea, and it would if done “correctly” change the game up, throw the allies off balance

    • RE: USA!!!

so im gonna backtrack to one of the original questions

is a NB in panama a worthy venture for US?
this way a fleet staged in sz64 (i think thats the #) can get to hawaii or sz91 off gib or to canada too

seems to leave the most options open for USA during early rounds, allowing for efficient redeployment of forces once axis intentions become a bit clearer

      anyone use this?

    • RE: USA!!!

id imagine queensland is the place to stage offensively too
great threat potential, your simultaneously defending australia and hawaii, plus anzac is in better position to backup the US fleet ops

and i can’t see a good way for japan to cutoff the fleet from getting back to hawaii
except maybe a NB on iwo jima to setup a blocker

      this is good stuff
feels like im learning a lot lol

    • RE: USA!!!

      your fleet ideas make sense
      defend with offensive units hmm…

but i said stage at hawaii because USA has to defend that AND sydney

now i don’t know the board backwards and forwards but, USA can’t hit the sz off queensland from the W coast can it? lol seems like a LONG way
so what is the best way to defend BOTH sydney and hawaii with the USA?

also full pac as a “cure” for sea lion might work well as long as russia is competent on the defensive and the rest of the allies can stage quick and effective offensives
i guess the alternative would be to either liberate london or just go straight for italy and cripple them

    • RE: USA!!!

      hmm…
so what’s the order of threats?

if sea lion works, is that the #1 allied problem?
taking london back is a huge undertaking if the kriegsmarine is still lurking around with 9 or so trans
and if japan simply sees america staging a defensive fleet in hawaii with maybe a 3rd of its income, it wouldn’t take THAT long for japan to get to the point where they start outspending the pacific US navy, would it?

    • RE: Russia - North or South?

i generally split cuz its more of a slow n steady strategy

but id say going south would throw USSR the most off balance

a dedicated southern push forces russia to pull back FAST or else risk getting units cut off from moscow
once this retreat happens, leningrad is basically a done deal anyway

whichever direction you choose as germany, EASTERN POLAND is your ticket to moscow
makes russia make the tough decisions about when and where to defend

    • USA!!!

since i feel like i know more about axis play then allied play, let’s start with a break down of usa

in the early rounds, staging a fleet in sz64 and slapping a NB on panama seems the best idea, that way you’re preparing for a London liberation, a pacific fleet, or a med task force

full ACs give ur fleet the most staying power, plus the air can be used on both O and D, so i think ACs and the air to fill them are important buys for USA in early rounds along with DD and some subs to supplement the ACs

i guess the big question is, if USA is going primarily pacific, how much IPC should be spent in the atlantic, and more importantly, on what?

assuming USA isn’t at war till turn 3, where should they be in the pacific by rd 5? 6?
and when do you switch gears to deal with europe?

    • RE: What is your most insane game of Global 1940?

this idea is crazier than it actually happening but…

back in OOB europe, USSR took Berlin…via AMPHIBIOUS ASSAULT!

he left his capitol lightly defended (something like 4-5 inf) and russia sacked it with 1inf, 1arm, 2 ftr, 1 tac & 1 BB offshore! lol

shame they took that tran away…

    • German atlantic ops

      hey guys

Germany has quite a few options for attacking Uk naval assets during the first several rounds.
However, hitting EVERYTHING isn’t feasible for turn 1.
What are the best SZs to hit and why? (not to mention HOW)

I generally opt for hitting 110 (3 ftr/tac, 2 SS) and 111 (1 ftr/tac, 2 bom, 2 SS). Then I’ll send my leftover sub to canada for a 50-50 fight for that Transport.

But I’ve heard of folks leaving 110 alone all together G1.  wouldn’t that allow UK to slip down into the med and really skew the power balance down there?

just basically wondering what’s the most efficient way to harass UK, and provide the best Sea Lion option (tho more often then not, i end up going the other way)

    • RE: To defend Sea Lion? Or not to defend Sea Lion? That is the question

i guess the way i see it, if germany wants london, they’ll get it.  but these opening attacks against italy only diminish your UK defense by 3 or 4 air?  Sea Lion will still be an expensive venture with proper UK buys and italy’s game is toast.  though this defense will require less resources from germany, the resources and momentum that italy loses could determine success or failure on the eastern front
