      Regarding Unstoppable Sealion:

I am not saying with any certainty that this would give the Allies a victory, but my face-to-face playing partner and I have had some discussions on what the Allies can do to counter Sealion. We have come up with two possibilities that we have never been able to try and no one has really talked about, much less tried.

1.) Try to sink the German fleet after it attacks the UK. This is contingent on the US buying bombers in the starting rounds and the UK preserving what ever fleet and aircraft that it can.

Under the new rule, Russia immediately enters the war when London falls. So, if Soviets see Germany build a G2 transport fleet, they can build a small fleet in sea zone 127 or 115 so as to take Norway on R3 when they enter the war. Now, the US can fly it’s bombers to attack the German fleet in sea zone 110 and land in Norway. If some German fleet still survives, the UK can use it’s remaining fleet and planes to clean it up.

Problems: What if Germany goes to sea zone 109? This prevents the US bombers from making it to Norway. Possible Solution: Russian build in sea zone 127 and take Scotland on R3 so the US bombers would have a valid landing place. Problem with that: Germany could use a blocker in sea zone 125 or 126. Possible solution to that potential problem: Could the UK position its fleet in such a way on UK 1 so that on UK 2 it places a blocking ship into sea zone 110 and 111 so the only option on G3 for Germany is to do Sealion from sea zone 110?

If the German fleet is sunk post-Sealion, what happens? How badly does this hurt the Germans? Is not enough pressure placed on Japan if the US spends rounds 1 and 2 buying in the Atlantic?

Those were some of the questions my partner and I had. Personally, I think it would be a huge blow to the Germans to lose their fleet because they wouldn’t be able to transport any remaining troops back from the UK to face off against the Soviet for a time (if ever).

2.) The only spot on the entire map that the US can use one set of transports to shuck troops back and forth is Alaska to the Soviet Far East (sea zone 2- sea zone 3). Now, if Germany does Sealion, Moscow survives past round 10. Right? Well, if the US buys fleet and ground for the Pacific, on US 3 (after London falls), they could move to sea zone 3 and offload into the Soviet Far East. From there, mechanized infantry and tanks can make it to Moscow by round 8 (best case scenario). Well before Russia falls. Can they get enough there to matter? I don’t know, but I’d like to try it out. To me, it beats flying mountains of planes since ground units are cheaper.

A few of the positives for this: By having a fleet in sea zone 3, you threaten Japan. Slow walking troops can go to Korea and or Manchuria. The US only needs to build one fleet to have a real effect and place lots of boots on the ground. It also helps the Russians maintain their income from all of the territories in Asia…. a real bonus in my opinion.

I would love to try these ideas out on my own, but I have a newborn in the family and that precludes me from playing for the foreseeable future. Guys and girls, give this some thought. My partner and I believe there could be some validity to these two ideas.

      @gsh34:

Talking about a German bomber as a can opener……have you had a chance to use that to any effect in your other games?  If so, I would love a link to the game so I check it out and see how it worked.

It’s strange, but so far, in each game that i have sent on or more Euro Axis bmb to China to can open for the Japanese, my oponent has conceded before i could get to use it…

Here are 2 links from current games where i just sent the bombers last turn, they’re not yet in position to can open, but it’s coming !
1st link, i sent 2 bmb but unfortunately, my oponent fleet is getting so big, that i’m afraid my german can openers wont be of much use…

but 2nd link is from my current tournament game ! I just sent it to Shn and he might see some action soon !

Interesting game report, but I don’t think we should evaluate this strategy based on a scenario where the invasion of France failed.

What about UK support to the US? Could that mess with the odds? I mean once the Germans land in C.US the UK should realize that they are off the hook. They could pump out quite a few units (tanks?) in Canada and send planes from the UK.

Should the Germans divert rosources to take out Quebec early to prevent this?

Yeah, I agree about the France part.  This scenario would have obviously went a lot better if Germany, and then Italy, hadn’t failed in taking France round 1.  I hope to try this again sometime in the future when hopefully our USA player has perhaps forgotten.
About UK support;  they did try building a few units in Quebec and moved everything they had to British Columbia due to the massive Japanese buildup in the Pacific.  However, for the first 2 rounds, they were scared of Sealion so did all their building right on London.  When the German fleet went to SZ 91 turn 3, both the US and UK players realized Germany was trying something new.  UK did build a few more units in Quebec to help out the US, but even with the US in such trouble, UK was pretty busy trying to get destroyers in the water to get rid of the German subs which were convoy raiding UK like crazy.  Plus, they put a couple of tanks in South Africa to deal with the Italians from Central Africa.

As far as the Japan War effort is concerned Australia might as well be located on the Moon.  That is how hard it is to get the neccesary forces down there to sack the captial against a smart Allied player.  To make matters worse Australia is easily reinforced by American Fighters and can be subject to liberation by America as well.  India on the other hand is not so easily reinforced by the Allies and once it is taken over by Japan the USA is not going to be able to get down there to liberate it.

I think it makes more sense to try and take Hawaii and India.  It is up for debate which one Japan should take first.  I think it depends on a variety of factors in choosing the first target but most scenarios will lean towards taking India first.  China can be marginalized on the way to India thus insuring the safety of the victory cities in mainland Asia.  China if not dealt with correctly can easily cost the Axis the game period.

Taking Hawaii will be a tall order at that point but Japan will at least force the USA to heavily reinforce Hawaii which may open a window for the Axis to win in Europe.

I think the Axis look strong.
Japan looks to have a good grip of India, and while there’s many Chinese left, you can see that Germany and Japan is close to linking up.

So even though Germany looks thin in Europe and have lost the Med. - and even though Russia looks to have many troops left, Russia is all but surrounded by Germany/Italy. So if you can prevent reinforcement into Russia, it looks like Axis can pull this off.

      Zallomallo,

It shouldn’t be too dificult to find one in these “high-tech” days.  Shreveport, LA only has about 250,000 people so you should be able to easily find a sign shop in a really big city.

      @gsh34:

      Guys,

Thanks for trying this out.  Calvin, did you also have Japan shuttling troops across northern China so that a constant supply of Japanese troops would be arriving at J5?  Would six to eight Japanese troops a turn even matter against Russia in this scenario?  Did you see any thing that showed promise about this strategy?  Do you think this could be something possible to do after a successful Sealion so the transports are utilized?

I wish I knew how to view your map download.  Can you explain that please?

I think the map is pretty self-explanatory. How are you planning on streaming in that many Japanese troops when your planes aren’t available for dealing with China and UK? With no pressure on Russia’s western front, I don’t think they have to worry about the Japanese much.

It’s flexible.  You want to protect Wake and Guam enough that Japan has no realistic chance at taking them. Even falling back to Wake if needed.  If you start this out on J1 because Japan allows it and then they turn and go 100% against you, then yea, you probably would need to buy a destroyer and all aircraft for their scramble ability.  If they ignore you for a time and go to India, then you could do it for less.  Basically, I see them spending 38-41 ipc/round in the Pacific on the cheap side.  Some rounds they may spend more if the player sees it fit to do so.  The good thing about this is that once the war bonus kicks in, it may give you a chance to split your income almost 50/50 so that you aren’t totally ignoring either theater.

I cleaned it up. Their is no official FAQ as of yet. The body of questions asked and answered make up the potential points to be made in the FAQ.

This is a typical process in development of the questions that will be elaborated in the official FAQ.

I saw someone mention African units to London, I’m guessing that is for UK2.

Best I can figure, it could be this:

      UK1
Cruiser, Transport from sz 98 and 2 land units from Egypt or Alexandra move to sz 92.
DD from sz 91 moves to sz94 to block Italian navy, as French fleet blocks in sz 93.
Carrier from sz 91 and tac move to sz 92 to protect fleet.
Fighter Alexandra moves to sz 92 to protect fleet: CV,CA,TT,Ftr,Tac.

      UK2
Move transport, ftr, tac and land units from SZ 92 to London, if Germany did not clear them out…only possible if in N. Italy I suspect.
Result: 2 land units and 1 Fighter from Africa on London turn 2.

There may be options that permit the Italian fleet attack or that don’t pull the tac off of London for G2 assault.

I would not throw away Egypt this way or not activate Persia on UK1. But technically it delivers the units as suggested. If the Canadian fleet meets on the other side of Gibraltar, you could technically have a 4 unit take back force if London falls. Although taking it back, just gives the Germans a chance to loot your treasury twice when they retake.
