Industrial Technology decreases the cost of every unit by 1 IPC. For example, infantry that normally cost 3 IPCs are reduced to 2, and bombers that cost 15 are now only 14.

RE: Larry talks about Franceposted in Axis & Allies Europe 1940
I think 2 in each French territory is reasonable. Considering they have 6 territories. Wasnt there a French Legion in Africa?
France has more than 6 territories. Based on what we can discern from the map, there are 3 in Europe, Syria, Algeria, Tunisia, possibly Morocco, and three in equitorial africa. France proper will be more heavily represented than its colonies, but there will be some units in the colonies

RE: Larry talks about Franceposted in Axis & Allies Europe 1940
Thats 100 IPC worth of units. and I think i saw a tank in the picture. Its in Africa.
The picture that we saw doesn’t reflect the actual set-up (also fetured in the picture are American troops in Poland and French ships in the Indian Ocean).
Japan starts with eight infantry in Pac 40. In terms of Revised or 42, six is a ton, but for the 40 games, it’s reasonable. I imagine Germany will start with like 10.
That’s a good point, but France is one of the Allies, who all started with barely any infantry. Also, Larry said himself that “France will fall” so I don’t think he put half of Frances infantry on one territory

RE: Funny YouTube video about Axis & Alliesposted in Axis & Allies Europe 1940
Btw, just played my first ever game of Settlers of Catan. Even after having it explained to me 3 times, I was totally brain dead on it until I actually started playing. Almost won, too, surprisingly
I love that game! It doesn’t make sense until you play it. During my first game I won and I didn’t even notice until someone else pointed it out to me. But this post is off topic…
If those people don’t have the patience to read through the rulebook, they definitely don’t have the patience to sit through 15 rounds and 5 hours of actual gameplay.

RE: Larry talks about Franceposted in Axis & Allies Europe 1940
Well it would make sense if it was 6 infantry in Paris territory, three in Vichy, three in Normandy. And of course the tank, fighter, and artillery is all in the Paris territory.
6 inf is kind of a lot for just one territory (even if it is the capital). I bet it’ll be more like 4 inf in Paris, 3 in Normandy/Brittany, 2 in Vichy, and the other 3 in the colonies (i.e. two in north africa and one in the equitorial african colonies). Then the more advanced units will be in Paris also

RE: In your opinion, what is strategically your favorite army to play and why?posted in Axis & Allies Europe 1940
Actually, in Revised, and Indian IC on UK1 will just tempt the Japs into taking India more and will give them a free factory
In my games of revised, it’s standard procedure to build an indian factory on Turn 1. Otherwise, there’s no way to reinforce india, and japan can pick if off J1 or 2 with their air force and infantry from FIC and Kwangtung
If you say so, i’ve never had that problem, espically if you send the Indian ocean fighter to destroy the Jap transport off of kwangtung. In our games it rapidly turns into a race between Japan and Britian to see who can build/get more units to that area, and if Japan is doing that, its not doing what it should be, which works well for the allies,
My games usually work out like this (if Japan doesn’t take India T1) but you’re right. This isn’t the point of this thread. UK is definitely one of the best armies to control. They don’t project the kind of power that the US doesn, but their influence is much wider-reaching (seeing as how they start the game with troops and territories everywhere from europe to africa to the south pacific (whereas the US must build transports to move their armies anywhere, an dthey usually jsut go straight for North Africa or France)

RE: Axis and Allies iPod App?posted in Software
No, TripleA isn’t in “app” form, so it can’t be used on an iPod/iPad. I guess we’ll have to continue on with only the actual board games and the TripleA computer version, no portable iPod version

I’d have to say my favorite is the US. Other than my personal bias, I just like to be the most powerful economic power, and I’ve found that in close games they’re most often the ones who cwin or loose the entire game. Russia is too defensive and doesn’t have enough options, the UK is fun, but really spread out and can’t always defend every front, Japan is overpowered in all of my games (AAP40 and AA Revised) and I don’t really like to play as them, and Germany starts strong, but it’s easy to make careless purchases and loose your advantage.

Italian Troops in Africaposted in Axis & Allies Europe 1940
Does anyone have any educated guesses as to the number of Italian troops that will start in Africa? From the pictures we’ve seen it looks like there are four Italian territories: Two in East Africa (Ethiopia and Somalia) and two in Libya (Cyrencia and Tripolantia). My guess would be two infantry in Ethiopia and one in Somalia, but I’m not sure about the Libyan territories. Do you think it’ll be all infantry or will there be offensive units (i.e. tanks, artillery) as well?

RE: Will Anyone Play Europe 1940 Separately?posted in Axis & Allies Europe 1940
I plan on carrying out a similar strategy to you: play E40 first to figure out how all of the new units and political rules fit into the game, then combine in with P40 and play the global game. I probably won’t play E40 much on its own after the first time unless it turns out to be really good or if G40 has lots of problems (i.e. Japan always invades Russia, UK can’t defend Africa, etc.) and we need to come up with house rules to alleviate them

RE: Air and Naval Bases in Europe/Global 40posted in Axis & Allies Europe 1940
They can’t really have mechanized infantry or jet fighters because they would obsolete the new units. Even long rang aircraft would ruin air bases. Well anyway I’ll probably just use what ever IL comes up with. Or just use the NAs Danny Boy made for Pacific
What are Danny Boy’s NAs?

RE: If the Axis won, who take Washingtonposted in World War II History
I don’t think it’s really plausible that any of the three major Axis powers would have been able to launch an invasion of mainland America large enough to actuallyhewould not have gained ground against the Americans fighting on their own turf. While the German army may have matched that of the United States, their navy was in no way ready to launch any amphibious invasion, especially one of the scale requited to attack the US. Italy… let’s just say I couldn’t see Mussolini walking into the white house.
Most likely, if the Axis were able to overhwelm all of the other allies, a cold war would develop between the US and Germany/Japan (and maybe even between the axis themselves) and all sides would race to develop defenses and nuclear weapons.
If any axis takeover of washington was to take place, it would be a result of either a revolution within the US or (less likely) an invasion by Mexico and other Central/South American countries supported by the Axis. Germany would likely send another Zimmerman letter, but this time would provide actual support. Although by this point, with the US in possession of nuclear weapons, i doubt and invasion would take place.

RE: Did Hitler really die in Berlin?posted in World War II History
First, Hitler is definitely dead. He killed himself hours before the Soviets stormed Berlin.
Second, I would take much of the History Chanel’s programing with a grain of salt. It seems like they sometimes sacrifice fact in place of something to make their shows interesting (they are a company, after all, and they want to make money). Also they have shows about monsters and UFOs, which makes me doubt the credibility of the entire channel

The top one is the Third Reich’s Naval Ensign, and the bottom one is their normal flag. Same with Calvin’s British Flags

RE: US in World War 2posted in World War II History
I must disagree with you Baker Street. You said yourself that the UK likely would not have survived (or would at least be severely weakened) without US support before the US officially joined the war. Even if Germany was unable to invade Great Britain (and it is likely that they would not be able to do so) they could successfully blockade GB long enough to force a Cease-Fire or even a peace treaty. This would have freed up much German industry to be used to attack the USSR rather than to defend the Atlantic against Britain.
It is true that by 1941 Soviet industry had reversed itself and was much more effective in producing war materials, however against Germany’s full industrial power they would not be able to hold out and would have been pushed back at least to the Urals.
On a side note, without the United States to aid the British and participate in North Africa, Italy (with the help of Germany’s Afrika Korps) would have eventually ousted the British from Egypt and taken the oil fields in Persia, which also would have had a detrimental effect on the Allies’ war effort.

RE: Japan in WW Iposted in World War II History
Very few of the actions in the Pacific affected the war overall. The only use of the German colonies that Japan attacked was to serve as coaling ports, and they were seldom used for that as it was. Even on the side of the Allies Japan didn’t devote their entire military to the war effort, as most of the other powers did. Had Japan joined the Central Powers, the most they likely would have done would be to disrupt British Southeast Asian trade, which may have encouraged Britain to deploy a battle squadron to the region but would not have had a major effect on the the war.
On a side note, though, if Japan did join the Central Powers, the alliance would have to re-name itself (as they would no longer only be Central European powers).

Maul could have been the best, but they underplayed him in ep. 1. They should have expanded his backstory (and given him a better death)

RE: Maginot lineposted in Axis & Allies Europe 1940
I seriously doubt that there will be any blockhouses or similar units in AAE40. It’ll just make an already-complicated game even harder to understand, without adding that much to the gameplay.
They’d be a good house rule to add, and they would better represent the Maginot Line, but I don’t think they’ll be in this game.
Blockhouse could cost 5 IPC. The fortification units had lesser men than infantry units or armour units, but heavier guns, so lets pretend it has 1 IPC-worth of infantry, 2 IPC-worth of heavy artillery, 1 IPC-worth of concrete bunker protection and 1 IPC-worth of mine-fields, anti-tank obstacles and barbed wire.
The Blockhouse could roll a die on 4 or less for hit, and take two hits like a battleship.
The Blockhouse could roll 3 dices on 3 or less for hits, and take only one hit, just to simplyfie the system, but this would also depart from the classic system.
The Blockhouse could half the attacking value, so 4 attacking infantry can only roll like 2 dices, or a tank hit on 1 only.I’m reluctant to use these types of blockhouses in the game. I think they’re far too powerful for their cost. If they only cost 5 IPCs, they should defend on a 4 (with only 1 roll, not 3), not move, and maybe have some other special power, like boosting another unit’s defense. I don’t think I’d add them into my games, though. They just make the game more complicated and encourage stagnant defense (like infantry stack) rather than the mobile attacking that the mech inf and dive bombers help provide.
