Axis and Allies has a scale problem, which is the nature of the beast when you try to put ww2 in a box.

A turn is supposed to represent several months, and in a single turn A bomber can fly from the UK and hit the Mediterranean sea sinking infinity transports

I do enjoy creative use of plans and figuring out weird flight paths, but it does give air power an insane ability.

historically/thematically, air power was more powerful when the bases were closer to the fight. (why fighters defend better than they attack) So could we have a feature where air power is reduced at greater ranges?

      Some ides I have,
      1)
Air Power uses 1 movement every time they don’t retreat. (let plains retreat, individually & separately whenever they want) my favourite but tricky to track
      2)
Air power only stays for 1 or 2 rounds of combat unless they are adjacent
      3)
Air power’s attack is reduced to the remaining movement the plains individually have

I’d like to see if there are other rules like this but i did not find them

@grinchveld said in Give up BUT keep playing?:

I want to give agency to the losing side. If you are confident you have lost already (barring a miracle) I want the losing side to have agency to change their game objectives.

I think the easiest and fairest way to implement this would be the addition of a round limit and more granular victory conditions like I describe above, including “Draw” conditions that more or less preserve the board position at a “1942” position.

Doing so would not only make this type of dynamic “reassessment of aims” possible but even essential during play, allowing either side the opportunity to advantageously to fall back from a disastrous blunder or die roll while still continuing to play meaningfully around the edges of the board hoping to “hang on for another 3 rounds” to whatever victory condition can still be managed.

Any A&A game where a player fails a huge attack yet still hangs on to at least their starting VCs should be considered a win, since with fair dice against an equal opponent any major operational failure or blunder should mean the loss of the game.

This Idea came up through talking to people here about avoiding infantry blobs. Spamming infantry is often the best way to play, but that can be boring. So to encourage more diversity in strategy, we came up with the following:

When taking Casualties, if you select the same unit type as a casualty 3 times in a row, you must take an extra casualty. So if you were defending with ONLY infantry and took 3 casualties, you must remove 4 infantry instead. [you may apply the same rule to all units or just infantry]

Players can adjust this to their liking. Every 4th unit must be different or even every 2nd unit must be different. I would love to play test this more online but not sure how to do that unless people use tabletop simulator.

the ‘Suggested Topics’ does look like others have come up with similar ideas.

      like this from 2015
      https://www.axisandallies.org/forums/topic/26036/simultaneous-play-in-opposite-theaters/11

I have not played the versions with more than 5 powers, but I do think the basic idea can work to reduce the number of turns in a round. by changing the turn order.

Implement after the 1st round or 2, to keep positioning balanced.
Depending on the balance, some small advantage for the power who gets skipped.

Then powers on the same side who have consecutive turns may all go together as long as you break the combat moves along the original order (from the perspective of the attacked)

Breaking the combat into multiple rounds does seem to be the organizationally new thing.
(or at least I haven’t found someone say it that way on this site yet)

My statement was that 10% of bombers were lost or damaged ( not used serviceable any more in the war) during the bombing campaign over Germany. Thats a number which does not include Fighters. Its a combination of day/night Bombing missions. Obviously night missions caused less damage overall, but even less damage to targets.

I suppose players could say this is a night bombing mission and obtain a lower score against enemy factory, but also suffer less damage

@SS-GEN WOW! so it doesn’t matter how many planes are there. only how many Artillery pieces. I have been playing it wrong! Thanks :)

      Rules say:
“Shoot Down Air Units: Artillery can shoot down attacking air units. Whenever an order card so directs, each artillery
can fire on one air unit in its zone. Roll one die per artillery against an air unit: On a roll of 1, that air unit is destroyed.” AN air unit. not EACH air unit.

That’s one of the problems with games is everybody banks there planes. My own game at least has it where u can lose planes in naval and ground when u don’t want to. If there’s a bonus plane kill u have to take one as a casualty
