I’m wondering if I’m going to have to wait until Set 4 for the Nebelwurfer. God, or even Set 5, if they decide to do an Eastern Front set. Argh! Ok… I’ll be content with my Flak 8.8mm that I know will be in Set 3.

I actually try not to come up with perfect armies, but rather armies that will fill the following criteria:
(1) Is fun for me to play.
(2) Is fun for my opponent to face.
(3) Is somewhat historically accurate
(4) Isn’t Lame/Cheesy or can be interpreted as such.
But it’s not a suprise to my friends should any of them stumble across this post. I’m the guy, afterall, who used to look across the table at my opponents before a Warhammer, Flames of war, or Confrontation game and ask, “OK, why are we fighting? What’s the story behind this conflict here?”
That being said, the closest I’ve come to perfect as I’d like is my highly mobile Allied army. Until I actually get halftracks I’ve been using miniatures from another WWII game (but they look out of place), but I use 4 American Halftracks, 2 jeeps and 2 British Inspiring Lts. for movement. Since we use the HHR from the A&AM Forums on the WotC site, you bet there’s 2 American mortars in there too! I have 2 AB and 1 AB Commander (w00t to the Screaming Eagles) for further mobility. Then I use filler based on what I think my opponent is taking and what sort of battle we are doing*.

I’m wondering if each unit should have a Morale rating. At the end of each Casualty Phase you roll 2d6 and have to score lower than the rating else you break morale and run for the nearest table edge. of course, there’d have to be a Rally Phase added before movement. The Morale rating would be affected by things such as killed units in adjacent or same hexes as the unit, leaders killed, stuff like that. Likewise, Rallying would be affected by having leader in the same or adjacent hex or moving into cover from an open space.
Yes, it would complicate the game a bit, but it’d still be a simpler game than most tabletop WWII games. The core A&AM game is so rules lite that adding some new rules will not burden the system down (unless you’re not into tabletop war games; I am so I’m all for extra rules). Then again, I’m the guy that’s writing up rules for off-table artillery being called in (Mmmm, Brits and French with their rolling barrages), so it’s no suprise that I want Morale too.

Halftracks for both the Germans and US. I still haven’t gotten my hands on them It’s driving me nuts since I want at least three of each.
-=Grim=-
The best way to do things like this would be to start bringing morale checks into the game. Shock troops would be forcing the enemy to make morale checks, irregulars would be resistant somewhat, and normal infantry would be… normal. I dunno. Introducing morale checks into the game would severely complicate the game above and beyond the the simple game we have now. Then you’d be heading into the realm of real tabletop wargames as opposed to a glorified boardgame.

June 6th couldn’t go by without OP doing something special. Therefore we’ve just finished up playtesting a special scenario for Axis & Allies Miniatures.
I want the rest to be a surprise but allow me to talk just a very little to whet your appetites. It has a new map! Not the normal 1/4-sized map that comes with the starter set, but a full size map that covers the size of the standard four map set up!
The new map comes with its own scenario. It has options to play using some very different ways and is quite challenging.
These new maps will be coming in kits soon, so stay tuned. We know you’ve been itching for maps and therefore I thought you’d want to hear about this exciting news.
That’s it! We are glad that you’re liking the minis we have begun including in the kits. This was always intended to happen and its reassuring to see the response they have gotten. Now that we can add a new map and scenario, the kits are where I’ve always wanted them.
I’d like to also thank Bob for manning things online until we were able to make this happen within the kits themselves.

Does this mean that the average person is screwed for getting the new map? I hope not, lest I’m forced to yell “WTF” and send out hate mail. It’s a D-Day special thing, so you know it’s going to be a D-Day map. MMmm, Beaches and Bocage, baby…. beaches and bocage. I’m all for it. So what are these “kits”?
-=Grim=-
Erm… I can’t seem to find this stuff on the site all of a sudden. The link brings me to the page w/ all the boosters and stuff. I wanna see the new stuff,!
-=Grim=-
Yes, unless the card says it can’t, such as vehicles that have no turret.
-=Grim=-
Sounds decent enough, except that for (4) you can’t be damaged and disrupted unless you’re a vehicle.
-=Grim=-
It’d be sweet if the Scots had a bagpipe player! They were there as the Scots/Brits/Irish stormed the beaches on D-Day. I wonder what they’d do? Uh… nevermind.
-=Grim=-
I’m iffy on destroying them if they land in the lake though. I’m reminded of the scene in The Longest Day (probably one of the best WWII movies ever), when the British AB land in the lake and the chaplain is rummaging around for his communion set like there isn’t machine gun fire everywhere. But then you have to factor in that AB, especially American AB who didn’t use canisters for their supplies but carried all of it, weighed a damn lot! So what if there’s a chance of them being destroyed and a chance of them being merely disrupted for a turn or two?
Maybe a 1-4 they’re destroyed (they land too far out to reach shore and it’s too deep) and a 5-6 they land close enough that after some struggling, bitching, and slogging they get on dry ground (out of breath and miserable to boot) and thus are disrupted?
Just brainstorming this as I type, so this isn’t thought out 100%.
-=Grim=-
Erm, I just use the box the game came in. They’re lightweight plastic pieces, so piling 'em all up on each other hasn’t damaged them in any way. Plus, the cost of a crrying case can mean having to sacrafice a few boosters… Nyuh uhh!

Over in the Rules Discussion of the Avalon Hill message boards, there’s that project called the “Historical House Rules [HHR]”, and it’s an attept to make the rule-cards more realistic and balanced for quite a few units (others were left alone). Has anyone tried using these? We gave them a spin the other night and they seem alot more realistic and had their actual historical capaicity on the battlefield. My only gripe is that the cards are in the A&AM colors, which means they’ll kill your printer if you want to print 'em up.
-=Grim=-
The only limitation I can see ever being on the game without people walking away in disgust is the one that’s already on the cards: the dates fpr each unit. I can see Early War and Late War tourneys, but since this is a historical game there’s no justification for taking out units. A Panzer IV removed from a tourney could only be done so in some lame “what if?” event.
Otherwise WotC gets a kick in the groin from every person who stuck through this game from the beginning and were loyal customers (if not prolific). I’ll hold 'em down, everyone else get in line. ;)
Naw, I don’t think they’d do that. This is a historical game. Magic is not.
-=Grim=-
Werd, they’ll keep releasing sets until there’s not enough people buying the game to warrant it, which means they’re gonna feed 'em to us s-l-o-w-l-y. I don’t mind actually, since it gives us time to get up the cash to buy enough of one set before they hit us with another one. Plus it’s not a tabletop war game like Flames of War. It’s a collectible wargame, which is why everything isn’t out at once.
-=Grim=-
Well, he did say “at least” so he probably has way more than 1 of each piece. I’ve spent under $100 and have most of both sets, so I’m sure he has like 5 of everything at the minimum.
Regardless… jeeze. I’d have a dope new computer for me and my girlfriend if I had $1000 to spend. Damn you people with expendible cash! shakes fist villainously
-=Grim=-
I dunno man - I sent some units from the US to Canada, and I still have not heard even so much as a reply, and I certainly haven’t gotten the other guy’s pieces yet. (Not gonna mention any names here) I just hope they got lost in the mail somehow. But because of that fiasco, I might have to give that one a NO. Sorry. :-(
I hope it got lost too (and will be righted). It’d be really <censored>up if this trading thing got killed before it even got off the ground.
-=Grim=-</censored>
Yup, Canadians will be present, at least in the D-Day pack. I dunno about CS.
-=Grim=-
This game advertizes asa collectible game, so there’s no mystery that they’re gonna keep putting out expansions for as long as there’s an audience to sell them to. Which is fine with me, since I bought the game knowing that. I didn’t know about this D-Day pack, but I’m stoked for it. Especially the pillboxes, tank traps and things like that. But there’s no new maps?
